You can have 50 new characters, and 20 custom costumes for each premade character. Some premades though, are less customizeable because of thier physical features. Lizardman and Flaming Nightmare are two examples.

It really is worth it. The more you play, the more you unlock. It doesn't get old very quickly. Even after you unlock everything, there's so much fun to have with custom characters. :)
