I saw this film in the late 70's & found it profound & spiritually moving. St Francis was imo a real follower of what Christ tried to Teach, but how few understand.
I see comments here praising the Catholic Church & other Orthodox Institutions. What has St Francis to do with these.? NOTHING. He rejected them in life & helped the poor & outcast. Everything he did rejected such Religious institutions just as Jesus Christ did.
Just my view point....no offence is intended to anyone's beliefs.
Everytime I watch this movie, it always moved me to tears. I was so touch with Francesco's humility. St. Francis of Assissi and St. Joan of Arc are my favorite saints of all.
St. Francis was a true imitator of Christ because he loved him. He wanted to be like Christ with all his heart and so he bore the stigmata.
Thank you Lord for the institution of the Catholic Church who has guided your people for over 2000 years. The gates of Hell shall not prevail against it because it is lead by the Holy Spirit. Thank you God for all your holy priests and nuns.
Saint Francisco is definitely my favourite saint, and one of the most loved by all Catholics. This man was so out of this world. He turned from the richest, handsome, party loving young man in the town to a devout Christian beggar in the street preaching the gospel by example of his poverty and charity. He lived out his life that way to the end, and in doing so converted to so many people to God.
@wukalar76 Yet, St. Francis was loyal to the Church. he preached to heretics and brought them back to the Catholic Church. He took great pains to reform the Church and to bring about the salvation of souls through preaching.
@wukalar76 NO. He STAYED in the Catholic Church, seeked out the Pope's blessing and helped change it from within. When the Church goes astray, God sends powerful men and women who become saints and set it back on track regardless of it's human sinfulness.
A truly moving scene. It does not matter what denomination you are and it does not matter if that is exactly what was said by St. Francis. The words and their meaning are Universal.

I like this scene, Francis confronts the corrupt biship and his father. Although, Francis came from a wealthy family he gave away everything to serve the poor. In this scene he strips himself naked, to show he owed his father nothing. Francis never became a priest. He was only a brother. Francis never felt himself worthy to touch the Sacred Eucharist. In his humility, God rewarded Francis by giving Francis the wounds of Christ's crucifixion. Francis lived his dream to serve God and the poor
@omarmallek: That's like asking if Martin Luther said "I am Lutheran" or if Buddha said "I am Buddhist" or if Moe Hamid said "I fly airliners into skyscrapers so gimme 100 virgins." Sorry, but your dog won't hunt. And as far as your Church name? The answer is yes: go and teach ALL NATIONS = UNIVERSAL = CATHOLiC. Do some homework.
St Francis gave up everything to follow Christ Our Lord. He gave back his clothing and possessions back to his father Pietro di Bernadone. From then on everything he would do would be for Christ and the poor of Assisi
This IS a beautifully photographed film, well-acted, and with a lovely soundtrack by Donovan Leitch. St. Francis's story is amazing...why, oh, why couldn't Franco Zefferelli just tell it the way it really happened?! This film is SO historically inaccurate! Read a good biography of this amazing disciple of Christ. Among other inaccuracies, Francis's bishop was his friend and protector, not his enemy.
Man is a spirit and has a soul and that is want I want to recaputure... my soul. I want to live... I want to live in the field... I want to feel the earth under my feet... Yes, Jesus was a beggar. I'm now born again! Great book to read after watching his video is Billy Graham's book How to be Born Again in 1977
If only we were like that, but even if you try and go to Down Town, spread the Word of GOD, no one would listen, they would only think you were crazy, it's sad how the world is like that now, but we will change, all for the Glory of GOD the Almighty Father, the Almighty Son, and the Almighty Spirit, Who shines of Holiness and Purity so great that it over shines the light of the Heavens and the purity of the greatest Saints, Their Love reaches the length that no man can ever explain!
@Domodeath why? the Lord gave us things to work with. Don't wish to be a beggar. Rather, thank the Lord for you have the needed things to help the beggars.
@ExTraCt634 The Lord Yeshua said "Many who are last will be first, and many who are first will be last", he also said "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
Also he said "Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me. From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus. From the desire of being loved... From the desire of being extolled ... From the desire of being honored ... From the desire of being praised ... From the desire of being preferred to others... From the desire of being consulted ... From the desire of being approved ... If some of our brothers and sisters love Virgin Mary, respect their beliefs, love is so much needed in this world.
Salvation is nothing more than a "war" God wages within our heart & wins. The tribute He demands is all we possess. Once we are stripped of everything the world values, including self worth, God bestows the true wealth that can neither be bought nor bartered. This is what it means to be born again; clothed in His righteousness, stripped of our own righteousness; an orphan of the flesh & an offspring of the spirit; born of the wind, that is, God's breath, His faith, hope, & love!
"Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions."
"Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."

Grande San Francesco!! Il cammino francescano è un cammino di libertà. Il mondo ha bisogno di San Francesco uomo umile e di pace. Lodato sii o mi Signore, lodato in tutte le tue creature. Grazie Padre per averci dato San Francesco con la sua innata umiltà.
Not all people have the gift of Wisdom. That's why there's a misunderstanding. If we know the truth, we share this to others but if they don't believe then let it be. In His time, we will understand. If we just know how to talk to Him in our heart, He will tell the truth. We just need to open our mind.
Splendid film and splendid my Gubbio. Unfortunately to the Vatican this not very agreeable film: It is able to be that this remembers them how should live a Christian!
The church is the body of believers in Christ. It is not a building or a certain sect of Chritianity. What brings anyone salvation is their belief that Christ is the only way to get into Heaven. God created us and the entire world to show His glory. That is our ultimate purpose. "there is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Saint Francis of Assisi was firmly committed to the truth that “outside the Catholic Church, there is no salvation.” He was not an apostle of Gaudium et spes dialogue. He was an apostle of Christ who preached the Gospel,
1. for the salvation of those souls who were already Catholic, but had fallen away from the Gospel ideal, and
@tjtfan87 ..."Also those are doomed who see the Sacrament of the Body of Christ, which is consecrated with the words of the Lord on the altar and by the hand of the priest in the form of bread and wine, but do not see in it the Spirit and Divinity and have not believed that it really is Our Lord Jesus Christ’s most holy Body and Blood” - St. Francis
Thus, those who try to portray Saint Francis of Assisi as an apostle of Vatican II’s new brand of dialogue and ecumenism are simply not telling the truth. Especially since today’s ecumenism, of which the “Spirit of Assisi” is the most radical element, does not seek the conversion of non-Catholics to the one true religion, but only seeks to work together with all religions in a “reconciled diversity” for the “betterment of the human family”
@tjtfan87 Be wary, there is but one Catholic Faith. That is the Traditional* Catholic Faith. Cast off that bondage of new, modern thinking, that has taken hold of the Catholic Church, seek the true Faith; the Traditional Catholic Faith.
St. Francis, Church Militant, and warrior of the True Traditional Catholic Faith.
@tjtfan87 I will admit however, I feel rather odd, posting comments, concerning such important a thing, on YouTube; however, I recommend you seek the true, and almost lost, true Catholic Faith.

Concerning my previous posts to you, ignore them completely. The information I provided in the previous comments is simply, perhaps completely, Negative Christianity. And the website I recieved it from, is certaintly a cruel source, who enjoys such negaitivity in religion. Forgive me, I am sorry. Ignore the posts. And Indeed, if St. Francis did say those things, he himself, comes into suspect for cruelty, and in being a fraud.
Matthew 16:18 "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
If Christ cannot be found in a Church (not a building, notice its a capital C) then why did he establish one?
Thats the true meaning lof Christs work...I am a catholic, and I hate the doings of the pompous and greedy clergy...maybe the reformation was a great eye opener to the corrup doings of the church, but St francis has got it going on!!!!
Maybe its time to reform yourself from catholic, to pentecostal! From a greedy, pompous catholic religion full of idolatry to a real Holy Spirit filled life of a pentecostal christian. Jesus died for you too.God bless you.
Pentecostal?? HA! Dont make me laugh. Anyone outside of the catholic church is a heretic to the true teachings of Jesus Christ. I want to be saved, and there is no salvation outside of the catholic church so I shall stay where I am. You worship God in your way as a protestant, and i shall worship God is Gods way in the Catholic faith...the true faith. Pentecostal and anything non catholic is man made, so technically your church was founded by sinful men.
It isnt true. In the Catholic church after the Synod of Nicaea (AD.325) everything went a bit awry. Idolatry, worshipping the Virgin Mary, make a sign of a cross, tenets, confessions, collecting riches and compulsory taxes and to kill people in the name of the cross.......
Pentecostals are a heretical sect. You have no firm doctrines, your teachings are so seriously flawed and has no substance to what you teach people. You are a religion of the book. Oh and by the way we don't worship Mary or the Saints, it is called veneration which means that you hold something in the highest regard. Mary is the mother of God, because Jesus is God and the second part of the Trinity, who is God made man, true God and True Man..but then you probably don't even believe that.
Cks125, I have a question. I assume you read your bible ;) If you don't, perhaps now is the good time. In the gospel of Luke (chapter 7 verse 28) Jesus says: "I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." (He is talking about John the baptist, obviously).
My humble question is - why are Catholics not venetaring him instead of Mary, since he was the greatest person born, thus even greater than Mary?
Listen to Jesus' words in the gospel of Luke, chapter 11, verse 27-28. "...a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
Doesn't it sound like Jesus right then and there debunked the newly forming and budding veneration of His Mother???
Before you call me too as a person of the "book" please dont forget: even the RC Church cites two sources that their doctrines are based upon: tradition AND the Bible. So you can't just dismiss the Bible because the Bible should be EQUALLY important to traditions even for a devout Roman Catholic. Is it for you"? Then read it, see if it adds up with the traditions. Even Catholics claim the Bible to be the word of God.
The only question remains - will "holy tradition" be more important than the word of God? If yes, then perhaps let's stop pretending to be Jesus' one true church because what He taught obviously doesn't matter compared to manmade traditions. If no - please read it for yourself and trust in His promise - the truth shall set you free. God bless!
Mystical warrior: How can John the Baptist be greater than Mary when she was the chosen one to be the mother of Christ, the redeemer of all mankind on earth? Isn't Jesus the total embodiment of perfection..St. Gabriel proclaimed that Mary will be called the most blessed in all the generations to come..
It is John the Beloved that was being spoken about here...Not John the Baptist.
Miss gina 79 ...God bless all the mothers from Eve's time to this day for they are procreators of life with God. But Blessed is the word of God for He is the Almighty King and creator of the entire Universe.. Mystical Warrior
@cks125: Careful, now, my friend! Truth in advertising -- Pentecostals are *fully and completely* Trinitarian in their beliefs, and in that very important respect are very much our Christian brethren and sistren (although they might not like that fact -- LOL). That their continued ignorance of things Catholic remains so profound is sad, especially when the truth is widely available in cyberspace, but eventually the veils will be lifted from their eyes and hearts. Almighty God will see to it.
the Catholic Church has never taught people to worship the Virgin Mary? who on Earth told you that? We do not make idols and whats wrong in reaffirming the Trinity with making the sign of the cross?
@MrAttilatheHun: You are ill-informed. Catholics do NOT worship Mary (boy, that is SO tired!). The words to the Sign of the Cross are "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT, BUBBA???? Confession? See James 5:16 (yes, I know that the heretic Luther didn't like the Epistle of James -- it flatly contradicted his heresy, But there it is, Bubba. IN THE BIBLE.). As for your last remarks, I would do them honor by evacuate my bowels on them.
@bass0111 Luther was a "heretic?" And you "evacuate your bowels" on someone's remarks? Wow. Nice "turning the other cheek" there, you judgmental sanctimonious twit.
@bass0111 Spewing alphabet soup doesn't invalidate my observation about your vicious ways. If anything, just confirms the notion that you're a sanctimonious judgmental twit - but with a twist of bigotry into the mix.
@MrAttilatheHun: The Catholic Church dates from the early-mid 1st century. Pentecostalism, a predominantly American, often silly aberration, dates from the early *20th* century. True Christians follow the early Church and its founder, Jesus of Nazareth.
this movie was anointed by God himself & if the catholic church is the way for you...than such is the will of God...but if any man sayeth that the church is an only way unto God than let him be called a liar...for God is everywhere and in everything.
So verily I say unto thee..."find thine own path unto righteousness ...God will lead thy feet thereof
I saw this film in the late 70's & found it profound & spiritually moving. St Francis was imo a real follower of what Christ tried to Teach, but how few understand.

happened to be Catholic. He separated himself from the power and the
corruption of the Catholic Church by giving up the life that he loved in
order to live the way that Jesus Christ taught us to live.

yeshua, gods only hebrew son isnt in any earth church. led alone a catholic one.
the only way home is gods son. not a building or a fancy attired "man" you call father. for there is only one true father and he is above in heaven.
so get a clue. this guy in the movie only did because he was called unlike most. he spoke the real truth.
thanks.

Matthew 16:18 "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
If Christ cannot be found in a Church (not a building, notice its a capital C) then why did he establish one?

@lukeslandspeeder: Hey folks, this moron is telling *others* to "get a clue". Wow.

Thats the true meaning lof Christs work...I am a catholic, and I hate the doings of the pompous and greedy clergy...maybe the reformation was a great eye opener to the corrup doings of the church, but St francis has got it going on!!!!
cks125 3 years ago 3
Maybe its time to reform yourself from catholic, to pentecostal! From a greedy, pompous catholic religion full of idolatry to a real Holy Spirit filled life of a pentecostal christian. Jesus died for you too.God bless you.
MrAttilatheHun 2 years ago
Pentecostal?? HA! Dont make me laugh. Anyone outside of the catholic church is a heretic to the true teachings of Jesus Christ. I want to be saved, and there is no salvation outside of the catholic church so I shall stay where I am. You worship God in your way as a protestant, and i shall worship God is Gods way in the Catholic faith...the true faith. Pentecostal and anything non catholic is man made, so technically your church was founded by sinful men.
cks125 2 years ago
It isnt true. In the Catholic church after the Synod of Nicaea (AD.325) everything went a bit awry. Idolatry, worshipping the Virgin Mary, make a sign of a cross, tenets, confessions, collecting riches and compulsory taxes and to kill people in the name of the cross.......

This is a reply to cks125

Pentecostals are a heretical sect. You have no firm doctrines, your teachings are so seriously flawed and has no substance to what you teach people. You are a religion of the book. Oh and by the way we don't worship Mary or the Saints, it is called veneration which means that you hold something in the highest regard. Mary is the mother of God, because Jesus is God and the second part of the Trinity, who is God made man, true God and True Man..but then you probably don't even believe that.
cks125 2 years ago
Cks125, I have a question. I assume you read your bible ;) If you don't, perhaps now is the good time. In the gospel of Luke (chapter 7 verse 28) Jesus says: "I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." (He is talking about John the baptist, obviously).
My humble question is - why are Catholics not venetaring him instead of Mary, since he was the greatest person born, thus even greater than Mary?
ginab79 2 years ago
Listen to Jesus' words in the gospel of Luke, chapter 11, verse 27-28. "...a woman in the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
Doesn't it sound like Jesus right then and there debunked the newly forming and budding veneration of His Mother???
ginab79 2 years ago 4
Before you call me too as a person of the "book" please dont forget: even the RC Church cites two sources that their doctrines are based upon: tradition AND the Bible. So you can't just dismiss the Bible because the Bible should be EQUALLY important to traditions even for a devout Roman Catholic. Is it for you"? Then read it, see if it adds up with the traditions. Even Catholics claim the Bible to be the word of God.
ginab79 2 years ago
The only question remains - will "holy tradition" be more important than the word of God? If yes, then perhaps let's stop pretending to be Jesus' one true church because what He taught obviously doesn't matter compared to manmade traditions. If no - please read it for yourself and trust in His promise - the truth shall set you free. God bless!

@ginab79 To be free in Christ don't look for differences, realise we are all Chrristians are brothers and sisters in Christ.

@ginab79: We venerate them both. Do some homework before flapping your cybergums.

Almighty God will see to it.
bass0111 1 year ago
the Catholic Church has never taught people to worship the Virgin Mary? who on Earth told you that? We do not make idols and whats wrong in reaffirming the Trinity with making the sign of the cross?
considerthis215 2 years ago
