In the UK you dont need a licence to own a thermal imager, nether in the US, HOWEVER, the US has EXPORT restrictions on thermal cameras.... cameras allowed for export from the US are restricted to a 9Hz frame rate.
To have a camera of this quality, the user needs to be vetted by the authorities. Camera's of this pedigree do not come cheap, but they do give amazing images especially at night.
clueless. YOU DO NOT NEED A LICENSE TO OWN AN IR CAMERA IN THE US!! I don't know about your crazy laws in europe but you certainly don't need a license here.
We don't have crazy laws, you are allowed to own an infrared camera here too, it's just not allowed to be pointing at someones house.. For obvious reasons >.>
that seems like a pretty crazy law to me. why should pointing an IR camera at someone's house be any more illegal than pointing a normal camera at their house? If anything you're going to see LESS with the IR camera, glass is opaque in the mid-IR!
@10mintwo Somewhat false, it depends on the type of glass used and the thickness. you could still see someone if they were up against the glass however it would be a faint image in comparison to the photons they reflect. A very sensitive camera could detect the minor fluctuation in heat across the glass quicker than a smaller cheaper imager.
near infra red that is 750-1300nM can be seen by even the cheapest web cam but as for far infrared or more comonly known as thermal imaging now starts at £3700:00 with the handheld TI cam for electricians, whitch can be ordered through most electrical wholesalers.
Depends what you are looking for, application etc. However, realistically the price of a decent IR camera puts it well out of the range of the hobbyist.
Yes, you can buy a very good one for that price or less. Just try a search on Yahoo or Google. Before putting that kind of money down, be sure you've found a reputable dealer, of course. :)

MUPPET. This technology in the wrong hands could be fatal. Hence regulations.
