  • In the UK you dont need a licence to own a thermal imager, nether in the US, HOWEVER, the US has EXPORT restrictions on thermal cameras.... cameras allowed for export from the US are restricted to a 9Hz frame rate.

  • MUPPET. This technology in the wrong hands could be fatal. Hence regulations.

  • To have a camera of this quality, the user needs to be vetted by the authorities. Camera's of this pedigree do not come cheap, but they do give amazing images especially at night.

  • oh shut up. no one needs to be "vetted by authorities" to buy a mid IR camera.

  • OH yes you do. The cameras we make / sell, you nwill eed a license from the UK and US goverments.

  • clueless. YOU DO NOT NEED A LICENSE TO OWN AN IR CAMERA IN THE US!! I don't know about your crazy laws in europe but you certainly don't need a license here.

  • We don't have crazy laws, you are allowed to own an infrared camera here too, it's just not allowed to be pointing at someones house.. For obvious reasons >.>

  • that seems like a pretty crazy law to me. why should pointing an IR camera at someone's house be any more illegal than pointing a normal camera at their house? If anything you're going to see LESS with the IR camera, glass is opaque in the mid-IR!

  • Well you aren't allowed to point any camera at someones elses house, due to invasion of privacy laws

  • @10mintwo Somewhat false, it depends on the type of glass used and the thickness. you could still see someone if they were up against the glass however it would be a faint image in comparison to the photons they reflect. A very sensitive camera could detect the minor fluctuation in heat across the glass quicker than a smaller cheaper imager.

  • near infra red that is 750-1300nM can be seen by even the cheapest web cam but as for far infrared or more comonly known as thermal imaging now starts at £3700:00 with the handheld TI cam for electricians, whitch can be ordered through most electrical wholesalers.

  • hehe good stuff

  • How much does a infrared camera cost?

  • Depends what you are looking for, application etc. However, realistically the price of a decent IR camera puts it well out of the range of the hobbyist.

  • Well will i be able to get one for under £7000 GBP Sterling? thats about $14,000 USD?

  • Yes, you can buy a very good one for that price or less. Just try a search on Yahoo or Google. Before putting that kind of money down, be sure you've found a reputable dealer, of course. :)
