"Captains Log, Stardate 4211.7. We have been pulled into what is being called "The JJ-verse". Many of the crew have reported migraines from overpowered light sources and motion sickness from uneven camera movement. I maintain through all of this that I am still the most awesome person who ever lived."
I gotta say that this looks better than any of the CGI effects that were put on the re-mastered Original series. They should've hired you instead. LOL
God. That's really good. Faved and thumbs up. I don't usually comment on Trek redo clips there are so many of them. But your work is exceptional. Maybe it helps that we're both Blenderheads. But this is pretty insanely great! I watched it over and over. I love the big clouds on Earth.
that is incredible this would rival pretty much all the ST shows in effect quality and mixing in the BSG style effects worked so well. love it, incredible work please do more :D
If you don't mind me asking: How did you do the zooms ? Was that render time effect (camera setting) or post effect? It looks very natural, and THAT is something I can't quite replicate this well....How exactly did you do it?
@jimp1102 The zooms were done in Blender, as if I did an actual zoom with the "camera's" focal length. Since Blender doesn't apply motion blur to zoom moves when it renders out, I added motion blur with a third-party plugin in After Effects.
At first I thought it was a physical model on strings and thought "What crap this is"- then I realised it was CG (Yeah, I didn't read the comments- my bad) then thought "Wow, this is a great looking shot!" The beginning camera zoom in gives it a Battlestar Galactica feel to it- really, really great work.
Im actually hoping to make something similar to this for a Uni project. do you think i could have the blend file for this so i can play about with it? it is incredible.
A-a-awe-s-s- some, i mean seriously you have a gift there. Id love to build a time machine and send you back to when the first series had just piloted and watch americans cry in their living rooms at special effects they just couldnt comprehend
@bubbahotep68 He (sorry I'm assuming it's a 'he') did something here that I find lacking even in the remastered TOS...he gave the TOS Connie a sense of real weight and mass during the flyby. Very nice.
@kranktank Yep, I'm a 'he!' I tried to animate the Enterprise in a non-aerodynamic sense, because in space nothing really 'flies,' stuff just gets pushed around via propulsion. So I added a very subtle camera move that fudges the movement just enough to make it look like it's floating on a path rather than sweeping in like a jet.
@momoflakes yep nothing needs to be all swoopy and perfect...if that's what you meant...you gave the camera some shake that is subtle enough to not be annoying like in Firefly but strong enough to make your brain think it's seeing something heavy flying by. again, nice work.
Yep, the dust was added in Adobe After Effects. I had to make up a technique because I couldn't find how to *add* dust anywhere! I think I'll make a tutorial video on how to do it in full; but in short, it's a black and white map of painted "smudgies" with lens blur effect, set to "Color Dodge."
That would be awesome, I so want to know how to do this, would help make accurate XI recreations, b/c they added this type of effect to the visual effects shots to make them look more real.
Great work! Reminded me of the NuBSG style.

"Camera" shakes too much. And there seems to be smudges on the "lens"
Steady the camera and clean up the lens and youve got something awesome here,
ReverendSyn 1 year ago
@ReverendSyn It's supposed to be like that in order to be more realistic( like someone in a space suit filming the Enterprise passing him )

Looking at the applications he used, it was probably in Adobe After Effects, using a layer that was close to being transparent over the footage.
