@bassjunkie223 I know you're probably being purposefully obtuse, and that this is pointless, but anyway: You do realize that while Tiff is not a totally successful racing driver, he has competed in the Le Mans 24 Hours 14 times (best finish 3rd), was a forerunner in British Formula 3 in the 70's, good enough to get into Formula 1 in 1980 (though the team had problems, only finishing 3 races that season. Tiff qualified for one race but the engine blew up.) He's not the best but he isn't that bad.

Ive had two early 90's GMC vans, Gutted with the 350, it would embarrass that VW. Loaded with couch/bed, entertainment system, and enough supplies for a 2 week getaway, it would still win. 5th gear is notorious for being simply a long car commercial. Top Gear all the way.

BTW, the vw has a turbo and the GM doesn't, cuz it's just a trend these days to put turbo on small displacement diesel engines to pass emission regulations (GAY).

I had a '88 Dodge Ram 350 van with a 360 police interceptor tuned engine, no way that VW would keep up. Get a proper body kit, a real paint job, do some actual interior work, beefed up air suspension and get hold of the same tuned 350 gasoline engine they used in the show and youd be on the right track -.-

The VW has a turbodiesel with 174HP and 295 lb.ft of torque, couple that with the fact that the VW is much lighter and the GMC doesn't stand a chance. The test is accurate and by the way: getting just 143 hp from a 6.2L V8 is just pathetic, even if it's a diesel...

@jml8841 Also, the 6.2 liter GM diesel is perfectly fine. It will go on for ages without more than a few oilchanges. It's downtuned for longevity, and compared to the 3200KG (empty) GMC Suburban I had, also with a 6.2L GM diesel - which moved it along very nicely - the G-series van is well over a metric ton lighter and is more than adequately powered compared to what it's supposed to do. The 6.5 liter turbocharged engine, the next generation, was used by among others the US HMMWV and Hummer H1.
@jml8841 Well that is because the 6.2 Diesel was never made to have much horsepower. It was made to get high MPG rather then power and you will notice how good it's MPG is compared to other V8s from the 80's and 90's ...
Still, the Chevy/GMC van is a lot better comfort then that new VW van has and as a whole lot other feeling when you drive.
@TheHainikklaz I assume it was tuned for high numbers of torque and not so much MPG. If they really wanted an economical van, they could have just used a small V8 or V6 instead of a 6.2L.
did some reasearch on the 6.2 litre diesel used in the a-team van in this video. The motor was rated at having 130 or 143 hp. Tihis is from wikipedia. My point is that even brand new the engine stood no chance against the vw`s supercharged 170+ hp motor. If the van had the 6.5 litre diesel(180 or 215 hp) then maybe it would`ve stood a better chance agianst the vw.(again, info from wikipedia).
they should have pitted the transporter vs a GMC SYCLONE or TYPHOON, also very old but 280 horsepower and the acceleration of an old time corvette, i don't think the volkswagen could beat that

Believe it or not the A-Team van in the show was ridiculously underpowered. They used to put Ammonia under the tyres to make it look like it was smoking when they did burnouts - one of the wonders of television. Nevertheless much rather be in that than any other shitty van

Hi, I am a little pissed off at you calling me silly, i have 30 years experiance as an engineer and mechanic, i work on vw / porsche merc, etc etc you name i do it, ive had several american vans both diesel and petrol, THEY ARE SLOW AND LARTHATRGIC PERIOD!! its all in the gearing, anyone can with experiance in conversion can make a usa van go as fast as anything, but stock v8 vans on auto transmissions are pathetic, as you can only do 55mph in the states its all stands to reason.
I could have called you alot worse. My point was that the Original vans COULD HAVE BEEN HAD with corvette engines back then. The one used in this video was BULLSHIT cause the Original didn't have a crappy diesel engine. As far as gearing it would have come with either a Turbo-hydromatic 3 speed automatic or a 700r4 a 4 speed auto with overdrive. The stock rear gear is probably a 373/1 or a 355/1. but it's easy to change that.

@turbomopar1 Here in EU GMC had a 6.2 diesel V8 from 1982 and up but it was the slowest engine availiable. They only uses it in the show to make the van look slow and usless.

It sure wasn't a diesel, and it sure as hell didn't have those stupid exausts at the back, they ended right before the rear wheels and were square, three on each side i believe.

The a-team van did have a lowered suspension, at least som of them did. If fifth gear wants to ridicule an icon of the eighties, they should have done their homework. the real van never had such a pimpish looking interior, but grey leather seats and a cool guncase at the back.

I bought a 97 jetta gt new and my wife drove it like she was in a ralley race I never had break down she never changed the oil but once a year it was wrecked twice repaired and it still kept going even took it mud bogging once. Zero maintenance and daily abuse and it never left me stranded finally sold it with 241,000 miles on it and it was still going...
My father has had 9 vdubs, 3 of them were CRASHED and they keep going til today, the older is a golf 1978 1.3 and it runs like the wind. I have a vw golf gti 2.0 8v, its not that fast, but its funny as hell to drive and its confortable and the better part is reliable and durable... My dad has a vw jetta mk4 tdi, its an amazing car. We had a vw cabriolet '86, they mixed water in the oil and the fucking shit didnt break off...
Even though the crafter and sprinter are actually a joint venture between the two companies sop none pinched either design plus the engines are different in the VW's than the mercs and you should also know that only the petrol version of the sprinter is more powerful than the top horsepowered version of the crafter. I'd like to see them all take on the new transit 3.2 litre 5 cylinder diesel with 200 horsepower.

Lame ass show, not the original A-team van. That gmc has the worst diesel engine gm ever built. It is a diesel eng, based on a gas engine, worthless. They should have used one more properly outfitted the van used in the chase scenes with stiff shocks and springs and a 454 with a turbo 400. The GMC Savana (modern G-Series) produces 323 Hp and 550 Lb.-Ft (746 Nm) of Torque.
The old G-Series with the 8.1L Vortec Produced 450Hp - 500Hp, and 490
Those aren't sport models, they are just what the vans offered.

The current GMC Savana vans produce 323 Hp, and about 746 Nm of Torque.
The old Vanduras had over 350 Hp and almost 800 Nm of Torque 7L V-8 Engines. I had one when I loved in Sweden.
The Current GMC Savana van which is the modern version of the G-Series produces up to 323 Hp, and 550 Lb.-Ft of Torque (746 Nm).
The old ones with the 8.1L Vortec had 450 Hp - 500 Hp (standard or maine) and 490 Lb.-Ft. I owned one when I lived in Essex

did some reasearch on the 6.2 litre diesel used in the a-team van in this video. The motor was rated at having 130 or 143 hp. Tihis is from wikipedia. My point is that even brand new the engine stood no chance against the vw`s supercharged 170+ hp motor. If the van had the 6.5 litre diesel(180 or 215 hp) then maybe it would`ve stood a better chance agianst the vw.(again, info from wikipedia).

well. i guess they rented an ordinary fan car, and tried it out. you can see that the inside isnt customized at all. what makes me wonder, that no one tuned the motor. in germany, you will never EVER get a chevy van, or gmc van without any edelbrock parts.

ok two things, one that jackass driving the gmc never took it out of first during the acceleration run and the idea of this test is to compare the "Ateam van" with the VW ,not a "stock" 84 GMC , anyone care to venture what a gearhead like BA would do 383 stroker with 850 cfm carb and a 10 over cam with full msd ignition and a 400 short shift with full drag converter and a full complIment of sway bars and that 12" over stock wheel width?

Believe it or not the A-Team van in the show was ridiculously underpowered. They used to put Ammonia under the tyres to make it look like it was smoking when they did burnouts - one of the wonders of television. Nevertheless much rather be in that than any other shitty van

My Facts are strait. You've never even seen the Real A-Team van in person, I HAVE. It was 1984 in LA at the Olympics at a promo event for NBC Employees and Families. It rumbled from the Cam and exhaust. It it existed today it would KILL you little VW transport. There is absolutely no question in my mind. NONE!

Hi, I am a little pissed off at you calling me silly, i have 30 years experiance as an engineer and mechanic, i work on vw / porsche merc, etc etc you name i do it, ive had several american vans both diesel and petrol, THEY ARE SLOW AND LARTHATRGIC PERIOD!! its all in the gearing, anyone can with experiance in conversion can make a usa van go as fast as anything, but stock v8 vans on auto transmissions are pathetic, as you can only do 55mph in the states its all stands to reason.

I could have called you alot worse. My point was that the Original vans COULD HAVE BEEN HAD with corvette engines back then. The one used in this video was BULLSHIT cause the Original didn't have a crappy diesel engine. As far as gearing it would have come with either a Turbo-hydromatic 3 speed automatic or a 700r4 a 4 speed auto with overdrive. The stock rear gear is probably a 373/1 or a 355/1. but it's easy to change that.

Also before making silly statements get you facts right as to what my point is, not as you have read into it. the video you and i have watched here says it all, its all judge and jury and to the comparison between the 2 vans, ie no contest the vw wins hands on both power mpg confort etc etc, i run a vw t25, original engine rans at 60mph flat out, i have installed a 1.9 td on a HIGHER !!!! GEARED gearbox !!, hey presto deep joy, she will now crusie at 80mph, plus double the mpg. have a nice day.

I agree! this is a stupid comparison! and since when did the GMC come with a Diesel? they came with a 350 V-8 usually a 4 barrel GAS engine! and that would stomp that VW! that van is probably a base model GMC van built as a copy of the A-team van, and probably doesn't even have any sway bars! base vans back then didn't have swaybars, because they were considered work vans and swaybars were not needed! They just want the American vehicles to look bad.

@turbomopar1 Here in EU GMC had a 6.2 diesel V8 from 1982 and up but it was the slowest engine availiable. They only uses it in the show to make the van look slow and usless.

Yeah it seems like shows like this go out of their way to find the slowest and poorest example of American cars and trucks to compare to the best from Europe. like comparing apples to watermelons. that is why a lot of people in Europe have such bad opinions of American cars and trucks, because of biased TV shows like this one, and their unfair comparisons. It sure wasn't a diesel, and it sure as hell didn't have those stupid exausts at the back, they ended right before the rear wheels and were square, three on each side i believe.
I'm sure they wouldn't have made such a fuckup on top gear.

The a-team van did have a lowered suspension, at least som of them did. If fifth gear wants to ridicule an icon of the eighties, they should have done their homework. the real van never had such a pimpish looking interior, but grey leather seats and a cool guncase at the back.

the a team van wouldnt have had lowered suspension like the vw, and didnt have a diesel engine. if you tuned one of those gmc vans and added as many upgrades as the vw van has then you might have a fairer competition. also bear in mind the vw van is far ugraded fromthe standard transporter

I was referring to a message where you write about a 6.0L van with more than 300hp. An engine like that must be a gas guzzler, the black vw of this unuseful comparison (...between a 2003 van and a more 20 years old van...) runs at least twice km with the same gas expense.

I bought a 97 jetta gt new and my wife drove it like she was in a ralley race I never had break down she never changed the oil but once a year it was wrecked twice repaired and it still kept going even took it mud bogging once. Zero maintenance and daily abuse and it never left me stranded finally sold it with 241,000 miles on it and it was still going...

My father has had 9 vdubs, 3 of them were CRASHED and they keep going til today, the older is a golf 1978 1.3 and it runs like the wind. I have a vw golf gti 2.0 8v, its not that fast, but its funny as hell to drive and its confortable and the better part is reliable and durable... My dad has a vw jetta mk4 tdi, its an amazing car. We had a vw cabriolet '86, they mixed water in the oil and the fucking shit didnt break off...

Even though the crafter and sprinter are actually a joint venture between the two companies sop none pinched either design plus the engines are different in the VW's than the mercs and you should also know that only the petrol version of the sprinter is more powerful than the top horsepowered version of the crafter. I'd like to see them all take on the new transit 3.2 litre 5 cylinder diesel with 200 horsepower.

Lame ass show, not the original A-team van. That gmc has the worst diesel engine gm ever built. It is a diesel eng, based on a gas engine, worthless. They should have used one more properly outfitted the van used in the chase scenes with stiff shocks and springs and a 454 with a turbo 400. I PITY THE FOOL!! actually never said on a team. that vw does handle very well though
