I bought the collectors edition of the standard xbox version back in I think 09 and I loved it. Unfortantly I got robbed sometime in 2009 and that collectors edition was stolen however I had a huge urge to play Star ocean again and bought International for my PS3 and I love it! I suggest giving it ago you can get it REALLY cheap now

I'm a big Star ocean fan since the second story on ps1 came out in germany even tho i was only 6 or 7 back then and didn't manage to play through it xD
well now i played all 4 til now and have to say that the second one is my favorite and i like the other 2 more than this one too, but that doesn't mean i don'T like it is still a great game and i won't play it just once that's already sure ^^

Great review, you hit all the points on the head and i totally agree with you on this one. I finally picked this game up after my search for what we consider a hardcore rpg for the ps3 and i couldnt be happier. Graphics aside(not that important, this game puts FF13 to shame.

I like this game dont get me wrong but stopped playing after beat first boss cause 2 characters dead and 1 with low health and getting into battles every 2 seconds is very hard To survive
most annoying character to me had to be... either Welch, Lymle or Merecle. welch was just plain dam annoying and her voice >.< Lymle was always annoying when it came to the cut scenes and end battle scenes where she always said "Kay!" at first it was cute but it just got irritating, and Merecle, must I say more?

Hour or longer before finding a save point? That really kills it for me... That's the same problem with Lost Odyssey. Absolutely amazing game but at some points it takes you 1-1.5 hours to find a save point, and that really sucks.
The most annoying character was...WELCH!!! OMG! She was annoying in both English and Japanese. WHY?!? Every time she came on screen, I just wanted to slap the crap out of her. (Sorry, I'm not trying to be violent towards women, but I'm a woman and she needed a slap.)

Dont know if you have answered this question.. is this prequal? and where do i find the serie in order? like is this the "first" game in the serie or is this like in the middle in the serie?
@MrPhotosnclips the fourth game is a prequal to the whole series it takes place after WWIII after the world became uninhabitable. The game will almost never sell new in stores because it's somewhat discontinued so chances are you will only find a used copy for the game but that was for the 360 version, I am not sure about the ps3 versions availability. Another thing to note is that the first and second game is on the ps1. I've never played either of them except maybe a lil of the first.
@MrPhotosnclips star ocean 3 is on the ps2, I don't know if it's on other consoles. I'm currently 17 hours into Star Ocean 4 (The Last Hope) and I can tell you that the inventing system, and story is far better in the third game and the combat is just a little better in the third game but both of them are good. The star ocean games are games for completionists, I love the series and to note I've done a 100% playthrough of oblivion 12 times. (~3000 hours) give or take and ~1200 hours on SO3.
@PrinceOF9Imagination yeah I've done over 3000 hours of oblivion, skyrim honestly isn't as great as oblivion on terms of replayability. You play skyrim once, get all the achievements/trophies, level all stats to 100, and that's it.
Normally I would not back-hand a child, but Lymle is a different story >:-)
And yes the boss battles are amazingly long and hard, and usually take long observation and skill to defeat, but the feeling of acheivment is soo much better than an easier game, this is only for the rpg diehard fans but if you are one you will love this game.
The most annoying character was definitely Lymle. I can deal with Meracle because in terms of fighting she's a badass, but Lymle just pisses me off. Square Enix and Tri-Ace both say she's fifteen, which is just unbelievable considering she talks like a five year old with a huge case of apathy. Only plus from her is Cerberus and the fact that she's pretty damn good with magic, but whenever she's in my party I have to turn the volume off.

Very good review. I totally want this game. I played through star ocean 1 and 2 when i was in highschool and missed the third part since i didnt have a ps2. I am really expecting a lot from this game.
To me Star Ocean 3 was so much better. I love this game, I've played every Star Ocean, but SO3 is my all-time favorite RPG. In any case you'll love this game, it has so many things to do and it's fun. Getting the Platinum is a task only for hardcore fans though, it takes more than 200-300 hours and several playthroughs.
@JohnnyLeyenda I agree with you, man. Albel and Fayt (as whiney as he is) are probably my all time favorite SO characters other than Arumat from this one. The item creation system was ridiculously better, too, since you could obtain random bonus crafters throughout the game. And Welch was a sweetheart instead of a raving, annoying bitch haha.
Yeah! And don't forget the Paracelsus thingy that allowed you to play versus, I probably spend around 100 hours just playing Versus with my brother and cousin.
@JohnnyLeyenda Yes! I remember I went for that sidequest right away and got my ass handed to me. Then when I finally beat it I was over leveled as hell through a good chunk of the game. It was wonderful haha.
if you watch you tube videos of people platinum-ing the game you'll see 700+ 1000+ hours of investment in their save data. I'm just 113 hours into the game, with that time I have 31% Battle trophies, 40% item creation, 66% treasures, 58% monster data and 50% quests and shop orders. The game is huge.
Good review but there's something I disagree - saying that 35 hours you've completed approximately 70% of the game is very inaccurate. Of course, assuming you mean a platinum trophy with regards to 100%.
this series reminds me ALOT like the tales series but thats series has 4-player co-op in battles through the whole game. So would you recommend this game on the 360 over the tales series which also has a game on the 360?
Your review on this version of Star Ocean: The Last Hope was great! It makes me want to get it even more. As for the characters that annoyed me the most, I'd have to say Myuria, cuz I'm sorry, if you're married despite your significant other being dead you really shouldn't flaunt your goodies to other men. Especially ones that are a few years younger. Not to mention she always gets so emo whenever her husband is mentioned, her character is a bit contradicting, but that's just my opinion. xP
Well, I liked all the characters, just the English voices were Annoying for Lymle, Sarah and Faize. (I will not throw Meracle into the list because her voice suits her personality and plus she's my favorite character.), now then Zeitgeist, even tho this is the PS3 INTERNATIONAL verison, is there much of a difference in gameplay and story structure besides the Japanese voice cast and changing the Menu style from CG to Anime?

the story of this game is pretty standard crappy japanese style anime. no i love anime but this story is like crappy anime similar to bleach. we must protect everyone in the universe we risk life to protect unknown strangers from unknown people...great! if something happen...ITS ALL MY FAULT! line usually shows up. and friends help each other! friends include everyone in the universe whom we just met. how do we know friend or foe? uh i dont know. i just protect.
u know if they take out the lvling system + equipment system and make monsters difficulties constant and give new skills/symbologies/gears after each boss fight the game would still be THE SAME. the whole point of lvl is to grind so u could fight optional monsters that are stronger for reward but monsters are hella weak. 2nd thing is how u customize each character according to lvl which is not here. u can't even customize ur weapons like old squarenix games wtf? he goes over pros but no cons.
well not the shittiest game i have played...i give it about 7.8/10..there are some cool cobat system like blindside but nothing else. press x and u will beat the shit out of everything. well i dont expect much from squarenix. atlus games are definitely harder but more 2d and definitely i would call hardcore. squarenix is more cute boys and girls and monsters for both guy and girl audience. story is very unoriginal..voice acting and animations are weird. music is not noticeable. gameplay press x.
how is this game any good? this game is not even hardcore...the game is fucking easy...i beat like 4 bosses already and all i do was press x and use directional button and use shit load of fresh sage to revive my party members when they die. surprisingly ur party member do shit load of damage. plus i dont like leveling system at all...why is there even a lvling system it doesn't ask u to grind the monster gets stronger as u lvl so why lvl and make monster stronger?
I have to say that the most annoying character was Edge, mainly because of his attitude change about half way in or so, maybe earlier. You'd think that eventually he'd be able to put his womanly emotion behind him and move on, but that never happens. I ended up stopping my playthrough of the Xbox version mainly because of the horrid character design and voice acting, and because of Edge, but with a more anime menu style and new voices, I'll try it out again.

@ultmgammer I hate main characters that blame themselves for everything that happens, everyone else is able to get over what happened, and yet Edge continually dwells on it like a kid BEGGING for some kind of attention. I loved the battle system, the plot seemed to be going somewhere, but Edge just go so annoying that it was hard to listen to him. And yeah, if you had the whole universe on your shoulders that'd be hard, but Edge hat like 8 other people looking out for him. That should help.

I have played all of the star ocean games, (other than blue sphere), and all on their original platforms (that means no psp port). i really want to get this but im afraid of it being like the last game Till the end of Time, which i considered to be a sloppy and rather boring game. will i be happy with the money i spend on this game?
@weasellord Well, u have to consider that it was made in 2004 and they had a lot of content. The story was pretty interesting & had me, a screenwriter, surprised each time there was a milestone in the story line (well almost, Sophia was predictable). The only thing I didn't like about that game was the term 4D space. It was a cool concept, but they needed a better name. They could've fixed some of the fights so it didn't take so long to lvl up though, that is what might have made it so boring.

This game is second hand in a shop near me for £9 (no idea how much that is in Dollars), is it worth me picking up? I was debating it and went with Nier instead, but if it's worth it, I'll go back down there and get it. :D
@Benjaminw92 Disagreement is birthed here. I adored the storyline and the dialogue. The only problem was the voice acting, and I halted Matthew Mercer (Edge) at Anime Matsuri 2011 to ask him a few questions. He admitted that they were lazy with lip-synching, but that was it, and it was the only problem /I/ had with the game. The storyline, characters, and gameplay were about as original as you can get with a modern-day RPG.
It was a fabulous game with few flaws and serious replay value. <3

This game absolutely succeeded in every way that Final Fantasy XIII failed. Apart from Lymle's incessant use of the word 'kay, it is easily the best classic style RPG going on the PS3. While other series have adopted more and more MMO style mechanics or flatout reduced content to sell more *cough FF13 cough*, this is a simply great game to play, and whatever score you see it get on review sites, add 3 if you're an old skool RPG player, and add 5 if you've ever enjoyed another Star Ocean game :)
just returned my copy after two days of buying it.. It freezes all the time and is unplayable.. sucks because i loved the first 3 hours of it, but i cant take all the freezing.. It freezes in cutscenes, random battles.. i picked up resonance of fate instead.. i think its because i have a 500 gig hard drive.. i tried changing the resolution and re installing it too..
please, next time you do such a review... don't show the playable characters from the later game, this is somewhat disturbing to see that THIS guy joins the party if you're not that far yourself (what is very probable if you watch a review)...

I was thinking about this game for several moments, but never actually bought it until I looked deeper into it. This should definetly feel at home along with my other games. ^^
the 360 version of the game also has some framerate dips during combat. I don't own it on 360 but i've seen it played at a friend's and when you get some of the more powerful attacks that are "flashier" you get alot of frame dips as lighting effects torch the screen with lots of bloom.
@Xeipherable dont go a walmart or stores like that,. try gamestop ( i found a " used" version still in its plastic wrap),. or try non big company used game stores,. u can find a bunch of old stuff or more of the discontinued stuff that way,. pawn shops sel discontinued games and like the other guy said the internet has everything,. just because a game might be discontinued---or not being made anyore doesnt mean no1 has em,. i got lucky tho...
Lymle and Sarah by far the worse voice acting in any game on any console of all time.

The most annoying character was definitely Lymle. I can deal with Meracle because in terms of fighting she's a badass, but Lymle just pisses me off. Square Enix and Tri-Ace both say she's fifteen, which is just unbelievable considering she talks like a five year old with a huge case of apathy. Only plus from her is Cerberus and the fact that she's pretty damn good with magic, but whenever she's in my party I have to turn the volume off.

Very good review. I totally want this game. I played through star ocean 1 and 2 when i was in highschool and missed the third part since i didnt have a ps2. I am really expecting a lot from this game.

To me Star Ocean 3 was so much better. I love this game, I've played every Star Ocean, but SO3 is my all-time favorite RPG. In any case you'll love this game, it has so many things to do and it's fun. Getting the Platinum is a task only for hardcore fans though, it takes more than 200-300 hours and several playthroughs.

@JohnnyLeyenda I agree with you, man. Albel and Fayt (as whiney as he is) are probably my all time favorite SO characters other than Arumat from this one. The item creation system was ridiculously better, too, since you could obtain random bonus crafters throughout the game. And Welch was a sweetheart instead of a raving, annoying bitch haha.

if you watch you tube videos of people platinum-ing the game you'll see 700+ 1000+ hours of investment in their save data. I'm just 113 hours into the game, with that time I have 31% Battle trophies, 40% item creation, 66% treasures, 58% monster data and 50% quests and shop orders. The game is huge.

Good review but there's something I disagree - saying that 35 hours you've completed approximately 70% of the game is very inaccurate. Of course, assuming you mean a platinum trophy with regards to 100%.

Your review on this version of Star Ocean: The Last Hope was great! It makes me want to get it even more. As for the characters that annoyed me the most, I'd have to say Myuria, cuz I'm sorry, if you're married despite your significant other being dead you really shouldn't flaunt your goodies to other men. Especially ones that are a few years younger. Not to mention she always gets so emo whenever her husband is mentioned, her character is a bit contradicting, but that's just my opinion. xP

Well, I liked all the characters, just the English voices were Annoying for Lymle, Sarah and Faize. (I will not throw Meracle into the list because her voice suits her personality and plus she's my favorite character.), now then Zeitgeist, even tho this is the PS3 INTERNATIONAL verison, is there much of a difference in gameplay and story structure besides the Japanese voice cast and changing the Menu style from CG to Anime?

the story of this game is pretty standard crappy japanese style anime. no i love anime but this story is like crappy anime similar to bleach. we must protect everyone in the universe we risk life to protect unknown strangers from unknown people...great! if something happen...ITS ALL MY FAULT! line usually shows up. and friends help each other! friends include everyone in the universe whom we just met. how do we know friend or foe? uh i dont know. i just protect.

u know if they take out the lvling system + equipment system and make monsters difficulties constant and give new skills/symbologies/gears after each boss fight the game would still be THE SAME. the whole point of lvl is to grind so u could fight optional monsters that are stronger for reward but monsters are hella weak. 2nd thing is how u customize each character according to lvl which is not here. u can't even customize ur weapons like old squarenix games wtf? he goes over pros but no cons.

well not the shittiest game i have played...i give it about 7.8/10..there are some cool cobat system like blindside but nothing else. press x and u will beat the shit out of everything. well i dont expect much from squarenix. atlus games are definitely harder but more 2d and definitely i would call hardcore. squarenix is more cute boys and girls and monsters for both guy and girl audience. story is very unoriginal..voice acting and animations are weird. music is not noticeable. gameplay press x.

how is this game any good? this game is not even hardcore...the game is fucking easy...i beat like 4 bosses already and all i do was press x and use directional button and use shit load of fresh sage to revive my party members when they die. surprisingly ur party member do shit load of damage. plus i dont like leveling system at all...why is there even a lvling system it doesn't ask u to grind the monster gets stronger as u lvl so why lvl and make monster stronger?

I have to say that the most annoying character was Edge, mainly because of his attitude change about half way in or so, maybe earlier. You'd think that eventually he'd be able to put his womanly emotion behind him and move on, but that never happens. I ended up stopping my playthrough of the Xbox version mainly because of the horrid character design and voice acting, and because of Edge, but with a more anime menu style and new voices, I'll try it out again.

@ultmgammer I hate main characters that blame themselves for everything that happens, everyone else is able to get over what happened, and yet Edge continually dwells on it like a kid BEGGING for some kind of attention. I loved the battle system, the plot seemed to be going somewhere, but Edge just go so annoying that it was hard to listen to him. And yeah, if you had the whole universe on your shoulders that'd be hard, but Edge hat like 8 other people looking out for him. That should help.

I have played all of the star ocean games, (other than blue sphere), and all on their original platforms (that means no psp port). i really want to get this but im afraid of it being like the last game Till the end of Time, which i considered to be a sloppy and rather boring game. will i be happy with the money i spend on this game?

@weasellord Well, u have to consider that it was made in 2004 and they had a lot of content. The story was pretty interesting & had me, a screenwriter, surprised each time there was a milestone in the story line (well almost, Sophia was predictable). The only thing I didn't like about that game was the term 4D space. It was a cool concept, but they needed a better name. They could've fixed some of the fights so it didn't take so long to lvl up though, that is what might have made it so boring.

The journey is awesome!! the music is powerfull and the characters are really cool. As soon as I started playing it, I immidiatly immersed myself in this univers and... This game is just a MUST!!

well, 20 of them were actually idle but still...

My opinion on the most annoying character? No it was not lymle it was DUNDUNDUN Sarah. It seemed that whenever she opened her mouth that I wanted to punt her out the airlock of my ship. She was just so... stupid. Then again stupid isn't the right word considering she is in a cast on star ocean -glances at SO2-

@Benjaminw92 Disagreement is birthed here. I adored the storyline and the dialogue. The only problem was the voice acting, and I halted Matthew Mercer (Edge) at Anime Matsuri 2011 to ask him a few questions. He admitted that they were lazy with lip-synching, but that was it, and it was the only problem /I/ had with the game. The storyline, characters, and gameplay were about as original as you can get with a modern-day RPG.
It was a fabulous game with few flaws and serious replay value. <3

This game absolutely succeeded in every way that Final Fantasy XIII failed. Apart from Lymle's incessant use of the word 'kay, it is easily the best classic style RPG going on the PS3. While other series have adopted more and more MMO style mechanics or flatout reduced content to sell more *cough FF13 cough*, this is a simply great game to play, and whatever score you see it get on review sites, add 3 if you're an old skool RPG player, and add 5 if you've ever enjoyed another Star Ocean game :)

just returned my copy after two days of buying it.. It freezes all the time and is unplayable.. sucks because i loved the first 3 hours of it, but i cant take all the freezing.. It freezes in cutscenes, random battles.. i picked up resonance of fate instead.. i think its because i have a 500 gig hard drive.. i tried changing the resolution and re installing it too..

please, next time you do such a review... don't show the playable characters from the later game, this is somewhat disturbing to see that THIS guy joins the party if you're not that far yourself (what is very probable if you watch a review)...

the 360 version of the game also has some framerate dips during combat. I don't own it on 360 but i've seen it played at a friend's and when you get some of the more powerful attacks that are "flashier" you get alot of frame dips as lighting effects torch the screen with lots of bloom.

@Xeipherable dont go a walmart or stores like that,. try gamestop ( i found a " used" version still in its plastic wrap),. or try non big company used game stores,. u can find a bunch of old stuff or more of the discontinued stuff that way,. pawn shops sel discontinued games and like the other guy said the internet has everything,. just because a game might be discontinued---or not being made anyore doesnt mean no1 has em,. i got lucky tho...
