I'm American and I am just curious to know that, even if the monarchy is abolished and a republic is created, do you guys think that you suddenly won't have to pay president? The president needs extensive security and travels frequently, probably more than the Queen does. Do you think he will be paying those things out of his own pocket? It might be cheaper, but you'll still be paying something. Doesn't some taxpayer money go to the Prime Minister for his travels?

For example, with the US, people ELECTED Barack Obama and can vote him out of office. Additionally, his daughters are not about to be made the heads of state of the country simply because they are his daughters and his blood flows in their veins. Hi. The UK is quite lucky to have an apolitical Royal Family, with a parliamentary style of democracy. From an American standpoint: No one goes to the UK for the weather, for the food or the pitiful, boxy hotel space. We go for the history surrounding the British Monarchy. i believe that the royal family has enough power to make a considerable difference in the world if they wanted to. the monarchy did become a symbolic role for a long time but its its coming back to power again. i think that the royal family realize that and are going to succeed in making a good impact on the world. i also think that most of the people that criticize the royal family just do it because they are either jealous or they wish that they had enough power to make a difference as well

I'm not a royalist but I can see these people do have a purpose: highlighting issues. Be it the environment, or the situation of homeless people, or victims of a natural catastrophe. They can draw the attention to different causes and help raise awareness. On the other hand, they also need to learn with the downside of all this attention.
If we are going look at developing a new constitution then we need to start a fresh. We must start an open debate on the whole structure, starting with the monarch, who are also are a tad illusive when it comes to the issue of expenses and helicopter trips and ignoring the Freedom of Information Act, it is now time to explore the option of introducing an elected head of state.

The celebrities do stuff they are actors, singers, footballers etc they work for their money it may not be civilian work but it is work. The first time the press is allowed to question God ordained monarchy, that signals its doom. Monarchy is the best system of governance when monarchs are national arbiters or absolute rulers. I'm American and I am just curious to know that, even if the monarchy is abolished and a republic is created, do you guys think that you suddenly won't have to pay president? The president needs extensive security and travels frequently, probably more than the Queen does. Do you think he will be paying those things out of his own pocket? It might be cheaper, but you'll still be paying something. Doesn't some taxpayer money go to the Prime Minister for his travels?

She is head of military by name alone, the monarchy plays no active part in strategy, the historical connection and significance may be strong but not justifiable enough to merit the monarchys existence. Britains problem is that it worships an old institution that is redundant.

For example, with the US, people ELECTED Barack Obama and can vote him out of office. Additionally, his daughters are not about to be made the heads of state of the country simply because they are his daughters and his blood flows in their veins. To me, the principle of monarchy is the problem.

As a DUAL American-UK citizen, I think the American system of government is unfair, biased, corrupt and full of red tape bureaucracy. Different cultures need different forms of government. You cannot force your government on others, Britain tried a republic under Oliver Cromwell & that became a dictatorship! NO THANKS! For the UK, a constitutional monarchy is a tried and tested fact THAT WORKS! A republic does not necessarily mean a better/perfect country. Countries like people are all unique!

I am PROUD that as a British citizen we have a royal family that not only cannot interfere with the workings of democracy but that we have a strong and proud and cost efficient royal family (63p/person/year) that makes us proud to be British. In a way, it's an incredible study in the history of the monarchy, and if an historian of the future wanted or needed to study the actions of the monarchy throughout this period, the collections of this man would probably prove very useful!

Hi. The UK is quite lucky to have an apolitical Royal Family, with a parliamentary style of democracy. From an American standpoint: No one goes to the UK for the weather, for the food or the pitiful, boxy hotel space. We go for the history surrounding the British Monarchy. Should our closest kinfolk ever drop the monarchy, look for a serious drop in your tourism GNP. Although I could never wish Geo. W. Bush on anyone I regarded as a friend, this is certainly something to think about. Peace.

I'm not a royalist but I can see these people do have a purpose: highlighting issues. Be it the environment, or the situation of homeless people, or victims of a natural catastrophe. They can draw the attention to different causes and help raise awareness. On the other hand, they also need to learn with the downside of all this attention.
