I went to high school with her and was even on the same page of the yearbook. She was one of the most well liked kids in the school. It wasn't because of her running. She was known for her love of running -- you never knew when you might encounter her running on the side of the road miles out of town -- but it was the early edge of the running boom. I think the longest event she could run in HS was about 1.8 miles in cross country. She was just a really, really nice person, always smiling.

@warhead888 yes, she ran the whole thing in 2:24:52 and the distance is about 26 miles

What a legend. Joan finished the Chicago Marathon yesterday in a stunning 2:47:50. At age FIFTY THREE.
What an unbelievable athlete.
