There were songs even before Tommy that began to reflect where Pete was going through his improve work. John always said that he'd wait and let Pete get started then fill in around what Pete was creating. John was the one who wanted Odds and Sods put out because there had been a laps between albums. Who by Numbers was Pete's work at beginning to come to terms with Kit's attitude and Pete's own drinking. It was shortly after he began the work on Lifehouse that he met Baba.
Absolute genius but sadly apart from Who fanatics have heard this song? I truly believe that Townshend will be revered in 200 years time in the way Mozart is today.
@Gruntfuttock100 I hope so, but credit is due to the entire band , as well, they are all genius' in their own right.
Pete has so much to say & give, he is def on a level w/ LENNON & McCartney, and the Who are the only band i hold in as much rever as The beatles...maybe one day everyone will realize their greatness which certainly towers over most other bands even the stones..
@Gruntfuttock100 i certainly hope so he well deserves it..he is a genius..if you stop and think of the entire who catalogue, it's mind boggling, from all their single / hits to the lp work and Tommy & Quadrophenia..they covered it allmost in the same way the Beatles did...
This is the play list for "Life House" if you're wondering:
Goin' Mobile, Baba O'Riley (Teenage Wasteland), Time is Passing, Love Ain't for Keepin', Bargain, Too Much of Anything, Greyhoung Girl, Mary, Behind Blue Eyes, I Don't Even Know Myself, Put the Money Down, Pure and Easy (the song that spawned it all), Gettin' in Tune, Let's See Action, Join Together, Relay, Naked Eye, Water, Won't Get Fooled Again, and The Song is Over (never performed live).
The version on "Odds and Sods" was a studio version recorded in 1971 for "Life House". The live version was done at the Young Vic because Pete was trying to 'practice' all the material 'live' for a movie he had in his head. Kit Lambert was the one who screwed most of it up. At a press conference, Pete was expecting Kit to announce the up and coming Life House movie, but Kit announced the Tommy movie instead. The rest is history so to speak.
the Townshed demo of "Time Is Passing" is on Odds & Sods, but this version is on Who's Next (Deluxe Edition). I like this version a hell of a lot more
What a fantastic recording and performance of a great song. I loved all versions of this. Pay attention to Entwistle wonderful bass riffery starting at 1:50, and he hits the change perfectly at 2:00
I have an album called the lifehouse chronicles which contains many of pete townshends demos for lifehouse you should check it out. I do not know the original tracklist for lifehouse
12. "Baba O'Riley (Instrumental)" (†) 13. "Sister Disco'" (Who Are You) 14. "I Don't Even Know Myself" (Who's Next [remaster]) 15. "Put the Money Down" (Odds & Sods) 16. "Pure and Easy" (Odds & Sods) 17. "Getting in Tune" (Who's Next) 18. "Let's See Action" (Hooligans)(±) 19. "Slip Kid" (The Who by Numbers) 20. "The Relay" (Hooligans)(±) 21. "Who Are You" (Who Are You) 22. "Join Together" (Hooligans)(±)
Double Wow! That is beautiful. Once again the double OO puts his stamp on a great Townshend tune. Is this show connected with Lifehouse? If so...Oh My God!!!
The Young Vic shows were part of a series of experimental concerts that The Who were using to "flesh out" some of the ideas that Pete had. He had written about his ideas for sort of an interactiv e concert experience that was based on some of the ideas he had for the Lifehouse project There was also talk of it being filmed. Some of these ideas weren't really understood by the press or even the rest of the members of The Who as they were very abstract
This Young Vic stuff reminds why I liked The Who in the first place.

Odds and Sods is awesome, and Lifehouse would have been even better.

Yes Sludge, that is what became Baba O'Riley. If you listen to the Lifehouse Chronicles by Pete, the demo is on there.
