Yes, I remember listening to the Dolls on a cross-country trip from LA to Miami in 1977. Check out the documentary 'New York Doll' about the amazing experience of Arthur 'Killer' Kane in the final days of his life.
@TheWho58 Why? Because I have benefited both creatively and personally from my use of drugs. That's why. Heroin is disgusting. It makes brilliant people boring. There is nothing romantic about being a smack head. There is also nothing romantic about being some holier than thou twit with x’s sharpied on the back of his hands. I’m just saying there are so many other substances to experiment with, besides that shit.
@ilovefreedom80 You are very right. I love the Beatles as much as I love the Dolls, and I've always wondered what could have been, had Lennon stayed away from that junk. Don't get me wrong, his solo output was impressive anyway, but I can't help thinking that had a negative impact on his work.
@youhavegeniusshins Yeah, smoke weed like a sensible person to loose anything sensible you've got.. Weed makes you stupid and burnt out, plus it's like you're getting prepared for shooting up in the future..
@ba773r1na That must be why practically every human being of consequence in the entire history of humanity has experimented with drugs at some point. Individuals who get "burnt out" literally smoke CONSTANTLY; not to mention that they tend to dabble with the hard stuff, as well. When used in moderation, the negative effects of marijuana are negligible.
@ba773r1na By the way, an ellipses is properly written “...” not “..” Maybe if you were a sensible person you would know that. Also, you meant to write “lose,” not “loose.” I am well read and thoughtful, you are naïve, misinformed and only marginally literate. You will not win this exchange. Give up, and have a lovely life.

And you're the one who does drugs, so who's naive??? I'm not the one who's misinformed, it's not my fault that your gonverment wants to have you stoned.
@ba773r1na If my government wants me stoned, why are drugs so fucking hard to get in America? You are talking out of your ass. I could give a fuck about your unsubstantiated opinions. Your comment still doesn't answer me as to why "practically every human being of consequence in the entire history of humanity has experimented with drugs at some point?" Any clues when this show was recorded? Maybe I'm seeing things but the drummer didn't look like Jerry Nolan, so I'm wondering if this was done in 1972 when Billy Murcia was still alive.
BTW those upset that the Dolls are still performing should remember that because they carried on when Billy died we know these great songs. The Dolls were way ahead of their time. underrated and unappreciated in their time, it's only now that they have (finally!) been recognized for their contributions to rock and punk. I saw the Dolls perform Trash 2 wks ago @ the Stone Pony, and it sounded even cooler than it did almost 30 yrs ago. This is rock and roll history, and should be appreciated as such...
it's really difficult if not impossible to trace the roots of anything, much less punk rock, to any one single source. however, the NY Dolls were as influential in that whole new genre of rock than just about any other band out there at the time imho. yes The Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground and others were arguably just as influential, but there were no other bands that made the same statement with the same lasting impact as The Dolls. Also Johnny & David were absolutely great at what they did!
That's the impression you get when you watch a vid like this. Yet, when I 1st listened to records by the Dolls, not paying much attention to their looks, i was amazed by this great, original, second-to-none burst of energy. No parody, no me-too product at all. One of the greatest rock bands ever.
Everyone here is saying the Dolls are not valid, and comparing them with the ones who came WAY after, like the Buzz Cocks, etc. The Dolls came FIRST, before The Clash, the Pistols, and WAY before the Strangler or the Damned. LEARN YOUR HISTORY!
i can see your point...yeah....well, not all of us are that knowledgeable sadly....anyway, yeah, new york dolls ain't bad...a band that came after them called Japan were influenced very much by them :)
Satori, you called him "Artie"? And you had great groupie memories? I don't know when that could have been. He had a live-in girlfriend all the time, and he was known for not being able to get it up due to his booze and also his drug intake. He was a sweet guy, but I never heard of ANY "groupie" raving about him.
i just finished that kill me book by legs mcneil--wow-- i came away depressed... the drug use was insane and way past "fun" in my humble opinion.i was also struck by the high amount of homosexual sex between the artists, managers and record label guys...i suppose a good book but it just appeared that in the end most of the artists were financially poor and at some point just when at it for the money.
I can't even believe some of the garbage I am reading here and to even begin to think about commenting is beyond my imagination so I will just say this. If you weren't there, YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE! And who said The Dicks were influenced by The Dolls. I should call up Top 10 and HDM. They would get a serious good laugh out of that. Trust me, I was THERE!! And those guys used to make fun of me for going to see the Dolls play.
The dolls can be considerated as precursors of punk (outrageous clothes and atitude) but they are basicly just a good rock'n roll band. They had a big influence on the ramones,Television, Richard Hell and the voivoids, the dictators or the dead boys(New york's CBGB early punk bands).Punk is an atitude and comes from good rock'n roll(listen to the sex pistols).
Television and the Voidoids were around way before the Dolls, The Dictators didn't really like them all that much and were influenced by detroit bands like stooges or MC5 more than anything. but yeah they did have some influence on the Ramones and a ton of influence on all what was going on in England
no disrespect man, but MC5, the stooges, velvet underground, maybe even the Doors were the orgins of punk. Television formed in '75 , voidoids even later than that (the dolls were around as early as '71 so there go's your logic them being earlier) Ramones were influenced by THE NY DOLLS, some hippie stuff beatles, beach boys, and 50's RnR. the Clash wrent even that good of a band either they only had only like 4 hits any way. IN CONCLUSION, I THINK I KNOW MORE THAN YOU.
Television formed in '73. yeah, The Dolls formed in '71, but didn't record anything 'til '73. I may have been too underestimating to say "around way before The Dolls", but I maintain that I'm right with regard to the fact that they had little or no influence over Television and the Voidoids (not that it's a huge deal. who really cares?) I wasn't saying saying anything in the slightest having to do with the Ramones' influences, so that was irrelevant.
In the book New York dolls by Bob Gruen and Please Kill Me by Legs Mcneil Richard Hell says that the Dolls were very instrumental in both he and Tom Verlaine wanting to form a band(Television)
The debate on new york dolls punk/not punk is idiot.
Punk music is just an evolution of rock'n roll music that started from the 60's with the garage rock bands such as the kinks(listen to "you really got" me or "all day and all of the night"),the trashmen("surfin bird" covered by the ramones) ot the sonics, the seeds and a lot more. Then there were the proto-punk bands MC5, the stooges in the late 60's,then glam-rock(T.rex,Bowie... and the most loud of them the Dolls)
drugs are just a thing that people do. you can't expect musicians to be different than anyone else. you just hope they can be responsible to take care of themselves. but the weight of not only being an artist, but an in-demand performer can make people crazy, and crazy people forget how to take care of themselves.
also sneakyman if you only look for bands that don't do drugs then your musically retarded and probably listen to pop otherwise you would know that 90% of all bands do some sort of drug or have done drugs or are on drugs when they are actually playing or creating their music.
its quite funny when you call them glam rock when they have the same quid pro quo as the ramones and all those punk bands they are fighting for the same thing and who needs to classify bands anywho they all have different tunes why label them as something to categorize. This is what makes scene which is what destroyed punk to begin with.....
Is it just me, or are most Proto-Punk bands better than the bands they influenced(although many bands like the Ramones and the Damned are damn great bands in their own rights)?
I don't think that when you have a lot of great bands that any one of them is better than the other. My favorite band is the ramones, but the dolls are just as good. They're all good except bands like my chemical romance n all that gay business.
How can you use a term to describe a band if the term didn't exist while the band existed? On a strict teminology basis, punk started with the Ramones because the term "punk" was first used to described their music. Instead of "pioneers of punk", I think a more accurate description would be "predecessors of punk", "pre-punk", etc. The Ramones were punk. Punk was the Ramones and all who were influenced by them. End of story. Have a nice day. Bye bye~
many pedagogics have used "proto-punk" for most bands that came pre-ramones and before widespread use of the term.
you can't limit it to just those influenced by the Ramones. Yeah a lot of the European groups were heavily influnced by them, but most of the LA and DC bands weren't.
i think the dolls were the true pioneers of punk...the stooges were still entrenched in hard rock and the velvets in psychedelia of the 60's...the dolls just came outta left field and lit the fuse of the ensuing powder keg that would be punk rock
i love the dolls but the true pioneers of punk were the american garage bands from the 60's, have you ever listened to the Sonics e.g. that was punk...in attitude, rage and sound ;
idiot thats why the dolls are glam not punk get your facts right and uk punk is good just because you sit up in your suburban house and dont know anything about struggle doesnt mean you can mock people who do and like to express is college boy
not almost all, ALL the uk fake tosser's, these guy's ruled, and never sold out (until recently, that is), they lived the lifestyle, not just putting on a false front like the british "punk" bands did. this was glam/punk at its peak. influencing the best the 80's had 2 offer as well, such as motley crue, faster pussycat and hanoi rocks, among others
matter of opinion, obviously yours is wrong, but there you go. just kidding. i grew up with the 80's bands, and loved a lot of them, but obviously the originators of the scene, like these guys, are the best. i do love motley crue and hanoi rocks tho
and whats more important in music than transmitt something??? even if its political?? i prefer political bands like sex pistols than songs about hungover or ...about getting sick after sex..and that kind of things....political themes dont make them worse!! ok???...and for those who ignore the politic ...YOU ARE COMANNDED BY IT!!!!!!! so stop critizing and make somthng to change this!

Do you know what gutter punk is? Its smelly hardcore punks that live on the street. They eat out of the trash and never shower. The New York dolls are glam, like glamorous. They are very clean, wear make up, fix their hair and know which scarf will accent their outfits.
'Trash'!Classic! But definately tranny glam,if punky..That was McClaren...I think Jagger sang
With an American accent whereas David is
American, yes?I heard a dad singing this to his
Little son on a park bench in London,so it is a Classic song...The Sex Pistols were bitchy too,But the Dolls were still a great band and Jagger is not god and it's only music.
McLaren came on later with the Dolls after the Sex Pistols imploded in about '75, I think, this single was before that. McLaren in my opinion was kind of a leach he tried to make the dolls into a political gimmick whereas before the gimmick was sort of acknowledged and not taken seriously, no matter what though the Dolls are awesome!
Thanks for a great piece of footage, never seen this one before. I just love that wailing guitar "solo". If you got it, give us more, please. I bought the Dolls' albums when they first came out and never understood why so many people hated them. Johanson looks so much like a cross between Jagger and Peter Noone (of Herman & the Hermits - for those of you old enough to remember). I read somewhere that Jagger didn't like them and left their show after a few minutes - definitely his loss!
Hi, thanks for your reaction. The Dolls certainly weren't too early for the UK, in fact they were welcomed with open arms for their first tour in 1971/72. Morrissey, as a teenager, even became the secretary of their UK fan club. They were very successful and had a great time over here, unfortunately cut short by the death of their first drummer Billy Murcia in London. Syl thanked the UK public for their early support during the meltdown concert of the reformed NYD in 2006, to be heard on cd.
Two reasons why so many people hated them: 1st-Timing. This was NOT the sound of the the early 70's, much too brash & crude. 2nd: Their look & style was intended to be outrageous. It worked-people were outraged.
Thier contribution came to be appreciated later, when it became obvious how many bands they'd influenced.
this band is epic...yet had the shitttiest luck of all or i think they would have been bigger! love it pioneers of who gives a fuck ..and if morrissey digs them something must be right!!!!
Punk rocks roots are firmly grounded in bands like the Dolls. They(media) lumped them in with glam rock, only because the name 'punk' rock wasn't invented until a few years later with the Ramones, Clash and the Pistols. Im sure there was an effort to ignore them. Belive me these guys NEVER got radio play. The first time I ever saw them was on SaturdayNite Live.
Thery are from 70s and i LOVE SOCKS THAT STINK OF A MIXTURE OF CUM AND BOTTOM DROPPINGS, GOD FORGIVE ME MOTHER.

it's really difficult if not impossible to trace the roots of anything, much less punk rock, to any one single source. however, the NY Dolls were as influential in that whole new genre of rock than just about any other band out there at the time imho. yes The Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground and others were arguably just as influential, but there were no other bands that made the same statement with the same lasting impact as The Dolls.

And those guys used to make fun of me for going to see the Dolls play.
siberalla 3 years ago
The dolls can be considerated as precursors of punk (outrageous clothes and atitude) but they are basicly just a good rock'n roll band. They had a big influence on the ramones,Television, Richard Hell and the voivoids, the dictators or the dead boys(New york's CBGB early punk bands).Punk is an atitude and comes from good rock'n roll(listen to the sex pistols).
great video and great songs though
gloubloux 3 years ago
Television and the Voidoids were around way before the Dolls, The Dictators didn't really like them all that much and were influenced by detroit bands like stooges or MC5 more than anything. but yeah they did have some influence on the Ramones and a ton of influence on all what was going on in England
EffinSkeletor 3 years ago
no disrespect man, but MC5, the stooges, velvet underground, maybe even the Doors were the orgins of punk.
WillFierce 3 years ago
Television formed in '73. yeah, The Dolls formed in '71, but didn't record anything 'til '73. I may have been too underestimating to say "around way before The Dolls", but I maintain that I'm right with regard to the fact that they had little or no influence over Television and the Voidoids (not that it's a huge deal. who really cares?) I wasn't saying saying anything in the slightest having to do with the Ramones' influences, so that was irrelevant.
EffinSkeletor 2 years ago
In the book New York dolls by Bob Gruen and Please Kill Me by Legs Mcneil Richard Hell says that the Dolls were very instrumental in both he and Tom Verlaine wanting to form a band(Television)
jezzkuh 2 years ago
The debate on new york dolls punk/not punk is idiot.
Punk music is just an evolution of rock'n roll music that started from the 60's with the garage rock bands such as the kinks(listen to "you really got" me or "all day and all of the night"),the trashmen("surfin bird" covered by the ramones) ot the sonics, the seeds and a lot more. Then there were the proto-punk bands MC5, the stooges in the late 60's,then glam-rock(T.rex,Bowie... and the most loud of them the Dolls)

drugs are just a thing that people do. you can't expect musicians to be different than anyone else. you just hope they can be responsible to take care of themselves. but the weight of not only being an artist, but an in-demand performer can make people crazy, and crazy people forget how to take care of themselves.
ergotNalkaloid 3 years ago 3
also sneakyman if you only look for bands that don't do drugs then your musically retarded and probably listen to pop otherwise you would know that 90% of all bands do some sort of drug or have done drugs or are on drugs when they are actually playing or creating their music.
Undertow418 3 years ago
i know some of my favorite bands do and they create the best music possible. I just get. the fuck. over it.

its quite funny when you call them glam rock when they have the same quid pro quo as the ramones and all those punk bands they are fighting for the same thing and who needs to classify bands anywho they all have different tunes why label them as something to categorize. This is what makes scene which is what destroyed punk to begin with.....

My favorite Dolls song.
Is it just me, or are most Proto-Punk bands better than the bands they influenced(although many bands like the Ramones and the Damned are damn great bands in their own rights)?
hemightbegiant 3 years ago

Bye bye~
Mystirey 3 years ago
yep you nailed it, new york dolls arent punk anyway just rock n roll or glam rock or whatever
robinmccready 3 years ago
many pedagogics have used "proto-punk" for most bands that came pre-ramones and before widespread use of the term.
you can't limit it to just those influenced by the Ramones. Yeah a lot of the European groups were heavily influnced by them, but most of the LA and DC bands weren't.
EffinSkeletor 3 years ago
yes its was famous for me.

i think the dolls were the true pioneers of punk...the stooges were still entrenched in hard rock and the velvets in psychedelia of the 60's...the dolls just came outta left field and lit the fuse of the ensuing powder keg that would be punk rock
tikiman75 3 years ago 2
i love the dolls but the true pioneers of punk were the american garage bands from the 60's, have you ever listened to the Sonics e.g. that was punk...in attitude, rage and sound ;

not almost all, ALL the uk fake tosser's, these guy's ruled, and never sold out (until recently, that is), they lived the lifestyle, not just putting on a false front like the british "punk" bands did. this was glam/punk at its peak. influencing the best the 80's had 2 offer as well, such as motley crue, faster pussycat and hanoi rocks, among others
w0bbl3r 3 years ago
those were all some really shitty bands you just listed. 80's glam was just terrible.
EffinSkeletor 3 years ago
matter of opinion, obviously yours is wrong, but there you go. just kidding. i grew up with the 80's bands, and loved a lot of them, but obviously the originators of the scene, like these guys, are the best. i do love motley crue and hanoi rocks tho

and whats more important in music than transmitt something??? even if its political?? i prefer political bands like sex pistols than songs about hungover or ...about getting sick after sex..and that kind of things....political themes dont make them worse!! ok???...and for those who ignore the politic ...YOU ARE COMANNDED BY IT!!!!!!! so stop critizing and make somthng to change this!

Do you know what gutter punk is? Its smelly hardcore punks that live on the street. They eat out of the trash and never shower. The New York dolls are glam, like glamorous. They are very clean, wear make up, fix their hair and know which scarf will accent their outfits.

With an American accent whereas David is
American, yes?I heard a dad singing this to his
Little son on a park bench in London,so it is a Classic song...The Sex Pistols were bitchy too,But the Dolls were still a great band and Jagger is not god and it's only music.
the13thmoon 4 years ago
McLaren came on later with the Dolls after the Sex Pistols imploded in about '75, I think, this single was before that. McLaren in my opinion was kind of a leach he tried to make the dolls into a political gimmick whereas before the gimmick was sort of acknowledged and not taken seriously, no matter what though the Dolls are awesome!
Someone2LoveU 3 years ago
Thanks for a great piece of footage, never seen this one before. I just love that wailing guitar "solo". If you got it, give us more, please. I bought the Dolls' albums when they first came out and never understood why so many people hated them. Johanson looks so much like a cross between Jagger and Peter Noone (of Herman & the Hermits - for those of you old enough to remember). I read somewhere that Jagger didn't like them and left their show after a few minutes - definitely his loss!
gertiemolly 4 years ago 4
I remember they came in on the Alice Cooper glam thing, possibly a bit to early for the UK,great band anyway!
ceoor 4 years ago
Hi, thanks for your reaction. The Dolls certainly weren't too early for the UK, in fact they were welcomed with open arms for their first tour in 1971/72. Morrissey, as a teenager, even became the secretary of their UK fan club. They were very successful and had a great time over here, unfortunately cut short by the death of their first drummer Billy Murcia in London. Syl thanked the UK public for their early support during the meltdown concert of the reformed NYD in 2006, to be heard on cd.
gertiemolly 4 years ago
Two reasons why so many people hated them: 1st-Timing. This was NOT the sound of the the early 70's, much too brash & crude. 2nd: Their look & style was intended to be outrageous. It worked-people were outraged.
Thier contribution came to be appreciated later, when it became obvious how many bands they'd influenced.
