  • Dang just barely found about her! LOVING IT <3

  • The guitar is like a one man band in this piece, simply wonderful!

  • She's an amazing singer.....

  • some songs are just sung others like this are lived through....

  • the blues bubbles in every word she sings

  • A clash of Nina Simone and Antony! GREAAAAAAT!!!

  • Wonderful! Thanks for posting.

  • gempari, I agree! I have her cotton eyed joe-live album with this song, but it doesn't compare to this recording! where can I get it?

  • What a voice. It's so soulful and beautiful.

  • Karen appears to be playing in A in regular tuning, probably because the 12 string guitar is tuned down to take pressure off the neck.

  • It is amazing!

  • Hey Brody, I went home and listened to this after our conversation and thought maybe you'd watch it at work again soon and get this little message.

  • Does anybody know what tuning this is in? The chord progression that matches is G, C, D. But with the chords she's making I can't figure out what tuning this must be in.

  • I usually play Elmore James' stuff in open D. That's what he usually used I think. That's what I play this song in. It's D A D Gflat A D. From top to bottom. Biggest string to the smallest.

  • where, where, where can I get this version of this song? the itunes of her singing this is nothing to compare with this. poster of video: please help? helplessly in love with this...

  • I just updated the description with more details. Unfortunately, this song isn't available in any recorded version - at least not like this.

  • Here's my top "unknown" genius of the 60's, Karen Dalton. Sometimes when I've had maybe a bit too much to drink, when my mind is staggering like the ghost of electricity and I need to feel real, naked emotion, I'll put on Karen's CD, "In My Own Time" and I'll just fall to pieces. I place that album alongside "Astral Weeks" or "A Love Supreme"

    It just slays me!

  • So last night I played the album "It's So Hard To Tell..." for the first time, it being recommended by Tom Moon in his "1001 Recordings To Hear..." book. I had to look it up again to see the release date. 1969?! How did I not know about this lady? I said to myself that this recording has a real "Astral Weeks" feel to it! I just looked her up on YouTube, and here's your comment with the mention of "Astral Weeks". I thought that was interesting.

What a lovely voice! I'm hooked.

  • Billie? :-)

  • this is what music is all about. STUNNING. A++++

  • So gratifying to hear

  • wow, her voice is striking, like it really stays with you, I love it...

  • "M.Ward" has a similar voice to Karen Dalton

  • Have you ever heard of CocoRosie? They're bitin' this. Cool group though.

  • it hurts me too karen

  • Love her voice; I like it best in "I love you more than words can say"

  • always liked this sound, kinda like janice. even a little billie holiday.

  • beautiful voice,great rendition

  • This voice breaks my heart.

  • I understand so well...

  • so true

  • so true

  • Karen Dalton was an angel with a broken wing, REST IN PEACE KAREN DALTON . Your music will live forever ! you are loved! very sad to see a talent like that not get the recognition that she deserved and reap the good things in life.

  • the real deal...thank you, Karen...you are missed

  • Holy crap! Karen's white?! Well i'll be god damned! Been listening to "how did the feeling feel to you" for years...

    best.song.ever.

  • magic.

  • Catherine Jeta-Jones would be perfect to portray Karen Dalton, if someone were to cast a bio-pic of her life...

    Johnny

  • Is this recent footage? What era is she? I've never heard of her before- quite extraordinary.

  • hmmm, so good.

  • I just listened to a couple of her songs today...what a beautiful sorrow filled voice!

  • she had such a sad life. reflected in her music

  • I know this is going to sound really awful but I am glad she had a sad life just glad it was not wasted on a lesser person. First time I have heard her and WOW.

  • ¿que guitarra es esa? 12 cuerdas...

  • just incredible... what a voice

  • One of the greatest things ever. Now how is Fred Neil not in this same documentary???

  • Heartbreaking

  • Agreed ,

    Cheers !

  • her voice almost sounds like a horn. Beautiful.

  • Raspy perfection which is unrivalled in the modern era. cotton eyed joe live performance double cd is mindblowing.

  • I might add Proudly- An OKLAHOMA Native

  • beautiful performance one of the best things on the tube.

  • Only Karen Dalton can cut you like a knife and soothe you like honey all at once.

  • They don't make 'em like this anymore.

  • i´m stunned. her voice and guitar playing is haunting.

  • This is great. I used to have her LP in the 70s and I've always loved her voice and style. What happened to her?

  • Nice quality to her voice.

  • Mesmerizing vocals

  • This is beautiful.

  • Opening footage recalls the Dylan line, "I got a junkyard angel."

  • Lovely.

  • That is a rather rare Gibson B-45 slope shoulder 12 string. According to Neil Harpe, only 77 of them were made. Only produced in 1961 before they changed the style.

  • su voz acaricia

  • She has a great voice!

  • Don't know if it's common knowledge, but she was a HUGE fan of Glasgow Celtic!

  • This is why youtube rocks for songs like this

  • There was a gorgeous video of her singing 'Blues Jumped the Rabbit' on this sight that has recently been pulled. I hope someone can put it back on because I need another fix. It was made for French TV.

  • Precious, thank you

  • Thanks so much. I love her.

  • wow...righteous!!!

  • Karen Dalton---the only reason I'm proud to be an OKIE.

  • Beautiful!!

  • Karen influenced "Zimmy" indeed, Zimmy stated that Karen was his "favourite singer", acc. to him,"She sang like Billy Holiday, played guitar like Jimmy Reed'and went all the way with it'.". Karen died 1993(55) homeless in the streets of NY. 2 LP's. July'07:2xCD "Cotton Eyed Joe" released, live concert early 60ties.

    Undescribable beautiful !!

  • Her friend Peter Walker sets the record straight:

"Let me put to rest these ideas that she died in destitute poverty and drug addicted homelessness," he states. "She was perfectly functional mentally. She was living in Hurley, in upstate New York between Kingston and Woodstock. She lived with AIDS for more than eight years, but with an excellent quality of life considering the disease."

  • I think she influenced Dylan instead of the other way around. But what a sad and lonesome lady. All the hurt in that voice. Amazing.

  • Yeah, that's what I am saying up there. She didn't only influence Dylan, but pretty much every other singer-songwriter that met her. A very special lady.

  • Just listening to those two wonderful albums again... superb.

  • Thanks a lot for this video, is a pure expression of art.

  • Astounding video! This is the kind of thing that makes me glad to hang out here.

  • she was distant and is a legend...

  • Wow - but anyone heard "Something on Your Mind" by Karen - mind blowing!! Can someone upload a vid for that if one exists...

  • woops, i meant to click the thumbs-up sign, not the down one.

i agree with you; she is amazing, and i've been searching everywhere for "something on your mind"

  • Very cool..nice vibe

  • This is not a performance.

This a pure expression of sadness.

    This is just blues.

  • Do I hear Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain" melody & "Hurts" text ?? Nice mix. Nice "Billy Holiday's" voice. Beautiful 12 stringer guitar with fine sound.

  • Wonderful....

Rare videos like this make Youtube invaluable. Thanks!!

  • Very interesting style...I can definitely hear the Dylan influence. Thanks for posting this; I enjoyed it! :-)

  • wow, isn't youtube great for this. I've been reading about Karen in some of the music magazines. So I was intrigued to find out what she sounded like.

I wasn't disappointed. Thank you uploader.

Now to see if there is any Anne Briggs stuff around :)

  • a thousand thanx for whoever posted this incredible rare vid'!

  • Did anyone said Billy Holliday? This lady had a fantastic voice. I think she did 2 albums. Five star rating folks!

  • Maxx England, from Big Road Blues site, using Cookie273's log in.

Beautiful, I just melted away, got to find more of her stuff.

  • Thanks much for this! I played many gigs with her in the Village in 1962. She was living on Ave. C with Tommy Gratin & her daughter Abby at the time.

  • What was she like?

  • Thank you for putting this wonderful clip up for us all to enjoy.

  • she is fabulous............first time I have heard her. What a riveting voice

  • She is amazing. seriously dense material

  • Thanks so much for posting this, I never thought I'd see footage of Karen, very moving!

  • Lovely. I've heard a lot about her but this is the first time I've seen her. I was interested in how similar her phrasing is to that of the late Dave Van Ronk. They must have known each other and I wonder who influenced whom

  • it's beautiful i like it

  • Thanks for standing up for Karen, snazzyhat. The nasty comment in question has been deleted.

On the bright side, cottonwood1234's description is utterly perfect. Thanks!

  • crippledfatty: truly one of the most ignorant, immature posts, ever. You should be, but probably aren't, ashamed. May the beautiful Karen rest in peace.

  • I had never heard of Karen Dalton until a couple of months ago when NPR did a article on her. Her version of Katie Cruel is so amazing (she wasn't half bad on the banjo either) that I got one of her albums from Amazon. She only produced two. She struggled with alcohol and drug addition and died in 1993 at the age of 55. What a loss!

  • Katie Cruel is such a beautiful song.

  • Ya think Devendra might have heard a Karen Dalton song or two?

  • devendra states that she's one of his very favorite singers, matter of factly.

  • Sarah says Karen makes Billie Holiday seem like Beyonce.

  • mistakenjamaicen..too late mate, she died a long time ago, sadly. what a loss :(

  • wow. i love this.

  • Wow. I've just been blown away. Amazing. I was just reading an article about her today too and I'd never heard of her before. Found this by accident. Strange coincidence.

  • The cars are so appropriate...she kinda sounds like one =/

  • Does anyone know where in Oklahoma she is from? I'd like to help her get local,OK, recognition.

  • I knew the lady she was from Lawton OK, a ruff life and she was as ruff and sweet as corn whisky

  • Could you tell us more about her origins?

  • She was from Enid, born in 1938.

  • Colorado Blues Queen.

I still have her vinyl from 70's.

I never thought I cd see her sing.

    Thanx !

    Youtube!

  • I received a track called Catie Cruel many years ago and marveled at the mystery singer's voice, the artist was listed as unknown. Now I know who it was, Karen Dalton. Thanks for this video I love her voice.

  • karen dalton i love you

  • Who is she?? really kinda spooky but wow.

  • Thank you so so much!

Have you by any chance got a video for "In The Morning (It's Hard To Know Who's Going To Love You Best)"?
