The only thing that can resolve the problems associated with coal mining is for someone, anyone, to come up with a viable alternative power source that's less expensive and easy to maintain/operate/develop. Until that happens, this will continue. You cannot expect the population of the world to change their quality of life simply because a dirt farmer in WV lost some property.

I live here. I know the hidden costs. I do not work in the industry nor do I have family that work in the industry. I am completely familiar with the industry and how it operates. Mountain Top Removal Mining is cheap compared to ANY other type of mineral removal form and it's much cheaper to produce coal than oil for energy. Find an alternative or quit bitching. There's no other choice.

While wind power could annually give the US 4% of its energy (MTR gives us 5%), stopping MTR is good in its own right. There has beeen 90% job losses in WV coal. The price of energy would NOT change more than a penny or two. Coal is an incredibly volatile market, and sometimes the price will vary 40 cents in the same week. Get educated.

Sadly, coal is not going away. It's the cheapest way to produce electricity, and it doesn't have the geopolitical complications that oil has. Plus, the US and China are sitting on literal mountains of it. But getting it requires leveling mountains and polluting rivers, and unless care is taken in burning it, that releases mercury, soot, and CO2. Those who would destroy the Appalacians have power and economics on their side.
