  • hhahahhaa a turbo diesel gets boss gass mileage guy...

  • The whole car body is plastic. The Saturn plant took plastic and metal in one end and a car was produced out the other - old style without all of the outsourcing. Many problems - over capacity problems for the Big3 (Detroit) were caused by excessive imports of cars - Toyotas, Nissans, etc. The Saturn was direct competition for Japan. Japan countered with lower wages (esp.) Now Hyundai is advertising it's Elantra gets 40mpg - maybe it's a big milestone... for them...

  • you are right, the saturn sc was efficient but it suffered from engine unreliability. according to msn auto:

"Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Cylinder Head (1.9L VIN 8 SOHC engine only), the Intake Manifold Gasket, the Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor and the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor. Problems with the CKP Sensor can prevent the engine from starting. The cost to replace the Cylinder Head is estimated at $948.81 for parts and $767.00 for labor."

  • I heard they break down a lot and engine max out at 100,000 miles or around there. This kind of car was chosen by my former employer and they did not like it after purchase like a whole fleet/dealership of these odd balls.

They drove these cars like 1000 plus miles a day. They have a stand-by mechanics to do all required maintenances. I heard they are considering replacing them. Lol.

  • @UnitedPebbles mines got over 190k miles on it and running strong. Bought it with 130k and I've never had to replace anything besides the radiator and brake pads.

  • I have a 99 SC2 and I love it to death. It really is a great car. As stated, it gets great gas mileage. And although it's not a speed demon, it actually is pretty nimble, quicker than most would think.

  • Is the SC1 the most fuel efficient model ever made? I never heard of a saturn getting any more than 34 mpg unless driven like a old lady.

  • these cars are troopers too, mine went to 240k miles before it died and i still was able to sell it, i bought it was my first car as a 17 year old with 164k miles. mine was a 1999 manual sc1 which im assuming is probly no different. granted 60% of my high school classes were working on the car giving it tune ups and changing oil every 2k miles (yes i did it that often because i got free oil from the school for 2 years straight so y not?) shame saturn is goin outa business.

  • Yeah, GM f***ed up on discontinuing this model. My autotragic '97 SC1 gets 35 mpg. This was such an awesome car and still it. The plastic body panels allowed this car to look great to this day (no dents and at most just scratches and peeling clear coat). Also, the engine is a breeze to work on. Probably one of the best and easiest layouts to work on. The only problem though, it seems, is that most S-Series cars prefer oil to gas lol.

  • Why my 1998SL with manual transmission just got 32mpg? I drive so gently.

  • I don't know. The WORST gas mileage we ever got was 37 mpg on the highway ( all hills) and 28 mpg in the city. An amazing car. GM is stupid.

  • @jaewhalee sls are bigger than scs

  • I drive a 97' SC1 purple. I get around 43MPG. Great running car. Requires little to no work to be done to it.

I also have a 94' SL2. Runs perfect as well. Gets a little less gas mpg because its a sedan. Still great though!

  • The best I ever got was 42 mpg. Quite amazing. This is GM's biggest "f".. up. These morons had the solution to the gas crisis right in their hands and they lost it. The best part was listening to the A-hole, Wagoner, begging Congress for 8 billion to develop a fuel efficient car. What is going on ? I drive to Florida from Pa. on less than 23 gallons of gas.

  • Yeah this is the reason Saturn went the way of the dodo. Cuz GM turned it into a copy brand. The Ion was like the cavalier, the outlook, aura, vue, sky, you name it, were all copies of another gm marque. Saturn shoulda revamped the original S-series cars and stuck to what they were best at for the first 11 years. (1991-2002)

  • I also had a Jeep, a horrible gas guzzler. I traded it in when Cash for Clunkers was giving $4500 for them. I bought a Toyota Yaris Sedan ( the Yaris Sedan, not the oversized golf cart Yaris). This car is amazing, too. I drive to Florida regularly. It's gets 44 mpg and it's not a Hybrid. I only paid $12,000 for it, minus $4500 for the trade = $7500 for a brand new car. GM is/and was , run by morons. Only a moron would lower the gas mileage in a car when gas is going up. Morons, total morons.

  • yea wut the hell. if saturn never got rid of this fuel efficient, simple, but good looking car, not to mention affordable, maybe they wouldnt have gone out of business. that was a dumb move of saturn to do

  • I have a 2000 SC1 with only 31k on it. I took a trip to TN the other day and I can say this does get AMAZINg gas mileage...I'd never trade for any other car.

  • I drive a 92 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ. This car`s nearly 20 years old, has 180 hp stock, goes 0-60 in about 7 seconds and can do 135 mph. I get around 32 mpg with that old car!

  • 32 mpg stinks. Trade that gas guzzler in.

  • LOL, are you serious?? 32 mpg is around 7,5 liters per 100 km. I`d need to get a diesel in order to get better mpg or a junk ass car with a gas engine which I don`t want. Diesels with their high emission of nitrous gases are not that ecological as always promoted. In my case it`s more ecological to drive my 32 mpg car than getting a new car with better mileage. Manufacturing a new car results in huge emissions. What I save on gas on the new car is destroyed by the emissions

  • that were emitted by building that new car.

  • I still think 32 mpg stinks. I don't own any car that gets 32 mpg. I used to have a 427" Cobra Superformance ( 550HP) that went zero to 129mph in the 1/4 mile (11.3 seconds) and it got 22mpg on the street. Still, we send $700 billion out of the country for oil. Religious extremists use their oil profits to plot to kill us all. Why don't we disappoint them and not use as much. I can think of better things to do with 700 billion than line the pockets of sleezy oil barons.

  • @tubamaxima i dont like you. i think its your voice. you sound like that scientist off of simpsons. or the kid that has a crush on meg in family guy.

  • @tubamaxima bean counter much ?

  • I had a '97 SL2 that gave me 220,000 miles and never left me stranded. Great car, and the body held up great thanks in part to the polymer body panels. But yes, GM ruined Saturn by turning it into another standard division selling rebadged generic products.

  • i <3 my SC1

  • I agree with everything you have said in this video as well. As far as I know these cars were great. Very reliable and efficient. I drive a 2006 VW Jetta turbo diesel and get 42 city and 55 mpg on the highway at 65 mph. My friend's think I'm nuts for driving such a slow car but it's not exactly a slouch and I'm spending almost 1000 a year less in fuel then they are. Take that BIG OIL!!!

  • The Jetta diesel is not a slow car. It may accelerate not as quickly as some, but it's plenty fast to get you a ticket. Speed is a relative thing. If we had an endless supply of cheap fuel we wouldn't worry about using a lot of it. Your moron friends are helping extremist countires fund their terrorism. Today - Less should be more.

Too bad about Saturn, but I never thought GM had any brains - look at the moronic Hummer . I bought a 2009 Toyota Yaris Sedan 5 speed. It gets 42mpg city/highway.

  • How about a Saturn sc3 2010 or 2011 with polymer body. The only reason i like Saturn sc1/sc2 because it is polymer light weight car the 1996 sc2 weighted only 2240pounds 124HP great HP you can add mods and make it faster NON turbo. i think the next gen Saturns are all ECOTEC engine ?

  • Saturn has lost it. GM runied it. I just bought a Yaris Sedan automatic , same room as the Saturn. Drove it from Florida to Pennsylvania last week - got 43 mpg. I heard the stick shift gets 44 mpg. Who needs a Hybrid Prius ? - it's twice the money as the Yaris. I laugh at these morons in their big SUV's and Tahoe's. They love to subsidize the Saudi's in their lavish lifestyle. Freedom of choice has it's costs - big time.

The Saturn was a phenomenal car - ten years ahead of its time. Idiots

  • Im gona try to trade my town car for this nice 1998 model at this dealer tomarrow, its worth 1,400 and in perfect condition. Right now im looking for a cool sound system for it while I wait, its 2:38 am lol and I dont sleep much.

  • My family's got one of these in fire engine red, it looks pretty nice for its age, pretty sporty :p

Anyways they rly like the car.

  • O and its a 1997 model.

  • The Saturn is too big for Europe. And besides, the idiots here don't want to drive diesels so we use 25% of the world's supply of gas and send $700 billion out of the country ( for oil). The minimum mileage here should be 40 mpg. We are all idiots, most of them with big fat asses that wouldn't fit in a small car.

  • Saturn cars are nice cars. I live in Europ, the Netherlands. To own a car here is 3 times more expensive than in the U.S. 1 ltr gas cost me here 1,5 euro. And I'am not talking about insurance or road tax or parking tax. If you own a car here and you drive only 15,000 km a year. That car will cost you 300 euro's a month. And I'am driving a VW Golf. To drive a big truck is out of the question. It's to expensive here. Saturn car is here not availble!

  • Hey Dude, I agree with everything you say on this video I feel the same way, I have a 1995 Saturn SL1 5 Speed SOHC that gets great milage. The saturn SOHC gets 41 at 60 MPH and 44-45 at 55 MPH. I also have a 1995 saturn SC1 and a 1999 Saturn SL2 DOHC Automatic that gets 38 on the highway. I would buy a new saturn

  • i thought i was the only one who thought these things

  • ok, whoever sais saturns are slow is a dipshit...sorry, but its true...this one may be rather slow, cuz its an SC1, but an SC2 actually gets slightly better mileage, and because of the low weight has pretty much the same power to weight ratio as new cars

  • Slow is a relative term. The SC1 will still go 100 mph. It may not have blindingly fast acceleration, but for an economy car, who needs it. The less gasoline I buy, the better it makes me feel.

I am perfectly capable of winding up a window myself, it has enough room to put lots of shopping, I only have one kid, so it still has plenty of room for other things.

My 540 horsepower Superformance Cobra will go from 0 to 130 mph in 11.3 seconds, gets 22 mpg ( better than the Tahoe !!!)

  • while were on the subject of performance/mileage...can anybody figure out y my new '08 rabbit gets liek 21mpg combined?? its ridiculous

  • Great to have a Very quick car and economic car. in summer for fun or pleasure use the quick car like the Cobra and daily driver Saturn sc1/sc2. sc2 TwinCam.

  • Yep, My 93 olds cutlass my car gets 32.

  • Good mpg but, 1. slow 2. no room 3. FWD. 4. cant hall or more things 5. crank windows. id much rather keep my tahoe than drive a cheap peice of shit that last 10 years.

  • Sorry you feel that way. You are entitled to buy and drive anything you want.

A Tahoe !!!\. Now there is a classic cross section of moronic mind set. Either your ass or your ego is really big. Enjoy keeping us addicted to foreign oil while you placate your inflated ego. Moron.

  • yea...dude...ur a retard...sorry to break it to ya

  • Another thing they can do is get rid of that good for nothing Union. Stop paying factory workers 30 bucks an hour to insert screws on an assembly line and giving them excellent insurance and all the other crap they pay for them. lower the price of the cars, why pay $28,000 for a Big 3 gas guzzler , when I can go to Kia,Honda, ect (non-union) and pay $14,000.

  • People are too stupid to figure this out. A "Save the Planet" Prius Hybrid costs over $10,000 more than the above cars. You can drive a long way on ten thousand dollars worth of gas. VW diesel gets 58mpg and Ford's diesel Fiesta gets 65mpg (but you can't buy it in the USA !!!!!!!!!). Stupid, really stupid. Americans are really stupid people. They would rather send 700 billion dollars a year over seas for oil and Islamic extremist funding than drive a small car.

  • Thank You Tuba, u pretty much said the same things i have been trying to tell most of my family members who think that getting the 2006 and newer models cars are better and stuff, while im the only one(in my family) who seems to understand that older, lighter cars are the way to go, aside from the fact that i do like The looks of the mid 90's-early 00's, they indeed have better Mpg (based on 4 cycl) and i proved it when we drove across country ^_^ (Me-1 gas stop , Them-3 gas stops)

  • Hi Nyxware:

Your conversion sounds great. My other car is a Superformance Cobra with an all aluminum block 427" rated at 540 HP at 6000rpm. I did 11.3 at 129 mph and had a terrible traction problem. I have the video on Youtube of the car. The car is so docile, my 25 year old daughter can drive it.

How reliable is NOS on that little motor on the Saturn ? I would be afraid.

  • ya theyre good on gas...my 02 5speed was alright...now its been converted to dual overhead twin sequential turbo limited slip dual clutch nitrous injected and gets 10mpg...somehow i dont mind the trade from 100hp to 465

  • I hope they do bring back this car. My first one '99 ran sweet nothing was wrong til some drunk totaled it when it was parked and my curent one is the last model year '02 so far so good.

  • I have no idea why Detroit would build less fuel efficient cars in a time of rapidly escalating fuel prices. The only thing I can say is that the plan to build the next generation of car ( with more power, more weight and less fuel efficiency) was based on fuel prices staying the same or going down. I'm no rocket scientist but only a moron would buy a car today that gets worse mileage than before. How does Detroit answer the gas guzzler demand - offer gas for $2.99 for the next 3 years. Stupid.

  • I've been following closely of the economic situation in the U.S. (and the rest of the world) and this Detroit bailout issue just strikes me so odd. What exactly is causing your automakers to need this bailout money? Is it lack of sales? Just plain old bad economy? What's ironic is, American cars in Korea can't sell fast enough. And they cost 3 times more here! We would rather buy an American over a Japanese anyday! And that's pretty much true throughout Asia, so what's the deal?

  • I think this is one thing we can agree on my liberal friend. Screw GM. Hey Detroit, get your crap together or get lost. No bailout!

  • "Liberal friend" - ouch !!!!

I just heard last night ( on C-SPAN) that GM "couldn't match the European CAFE standards of 50 mpg. Maybe someone should remind GM CEO Wagoner that GM already has a car in Europe that gets 50 mpg. Bring it over here. Yes, the car is small so most Americans won't be able to fit their fat asses into one, but the remaining 20% of us can fit in one.

  • The bastards are trying to PR this into a win,

we are getting BSed by these corporations into thinking America cannon survive without them, we will be fine these mother fuckers need and deserve to go get fucked.

  • Great video. Had a 02 SL1 that loved to pass by gas stations. Miss the polymer days!!!

  • I remember my Saturn, and how the fenders would bounce back...it ran forever and was reliable...just like my Honda wagon I owned...but because it does not make money for GM on the short term they don't stick with it...it is that thinking that got them in the problem they are in..while Toyota stuck with the Prius until the market increased for them and now they are ahead of the game, while GM lost 10yrs by killing the EV1 - just idiots - I am converting a '96 Sunfire to electric now..

  • Please tell me how you are converting your Sunfire to electric. I would like to do that to a car, too.

    Antoni

  • I think it is not that easy, you have to find a motor has enough torque and power to move the car along with all your pay load. And you also need a set of variable frequency drive, a programmable one will help. I do not think lead acid battery is a good option as power source. The more expensive Ni-Cad battery might work better. There was one electrical concept I saw in the summer. They only have a 64kw motor with lithium battery. But the good new is you can throw your transmission away.

  • She's a beauty...great, great video.

    Truth hurts, don't it?

  • GM want excuse to suck public money dry.

Honda civic 1990 to 1996 get over 40mpg too.

  • I live in Japan, where they have tough restrictions on cars, like being taxed if your odometer goes too high; they don't like the oil leaks and pollution. Also, the cars here are SMALL. You could push them over, but that's cool because they have great mileage.
