From what I understand, in most Provinces you can't force someone to go into treatment, they have to volunteer themselves. I think Alberta is the only exception. How can someone force these people into detox and rehab against their will and expect a 100% abstinence rate for the rest of their life?
You retards cannot listen. Can he send them all into detox? No, but he will not spend YOUR money on needles. He will try to spend it in prevention programs. If you cannot rescue your own friend who have been doing heroin for 15 years, it's not the government job to do so anyway or it wouldn't work anyway.
Wait, did he say the government is spending 10,000,000 on Insite? What a load of shit. The Ministry of Health's own report on Insite said a total of 2,500,000 was being spent on Insite, not 10 million!
He says he"won't give up on a single person" what does that mean? What is his solution? Force them all into detox? How is someone who has been using heroin for the past 15 years just going to stop using? He doesn't believe in the evidence of Insite's benefits because he is obviously so much more intelligent than all the other countries who have now adopted this harm reduction method and WHO, BC Center for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and all the others who are fully supporting Insite! Unbelievable!
He was seen on a youtube interview saying "I believe in needle sharing, I believe in needle sharing" Lets see if Harper will harp on Tony for his lack of communications skills !
@ve3ded he misspoke in a heated conversation, give him a break - even the people who were arguing with him gave him that concession. he has a bad argument, but focus on the weaknesses in his argument, not a little mistake.
@uberscheisse Tony doesn't understand shit on this subject. Sadly my fellow misguided voters voted him in again. Sadly due to split votes on the NDP and Liberals we're now stuck with these clowns in a majority for 4 years. Sadly most con voters can't see through the American style attack ads. I'm not bitter because the cons have a majority. I'm bitter because the majority of Canadians didn't vote for them. Really this election wasn't a mandate for the cons. It shows how divided and broken we are
He said he read the research, but he obviously doesn't understand it. Comparing Insite to paliative care is rediculous. Paliative care is end of life care, whereas, people who use the services of Insite are there to maintain their lives. There is no comparison. Just another ploy to pull at the heart strings of the voters from a man who doesn't care a hoot about people with addictions.
There is nothing honorable about a man who demeans and judges his fellow man based on his beliefs. For example, that flyer he just mailed out to all Canadians. "Keep junkies away from our families and children" The term "junkie" is stigamtizing and discriminating. Addicts are someone's family or child. "Put them in rehab" Great, but where are those rehabs? Can't build rehabs when they're sinking all the money into enforcement.
"A disgrace" is that you are in a position of power in our country with such a closed mind on such an important issue. You seem more interested in how you will appear on youtube than listening to the citizens of our country. It is my hope you will soon be replaced by someone who shows genuine concern for the well being of all Canadians.
The man doesn't even try to get it, and as such shouldn't be a minister of the crown. He sets up the red herring that other social services and Insite are somehow mutually exclusive and he gets away with it!
Clearly Tony doesn't understand that every day, at every moment, Canadians are putting needles in their arms anyway, and that one of the most significant harms reduced at Insite is that those who do it there will be doing it safely.
Clement's definition of "palliative care" is "watching someone die slowly". The WHO calls palliative care "an approach that improves the quality of life of patients...facing problems associated with life-threatening illness.' Addiction is an illness, Tony. Then you send me a flyer saying "junkies" are criminals. Make up your mind, man! And while you're at it, maybe you should avail yourself of some of the services provided by your department!
Its hard to comment on this politician without resorting to swearing. Harper's Conservative government is made up of this sort of self-serving, smarmy sleaze bags. Time to flush them out.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Finally a politician who does not bend to the vocal minority.
Clement has done his research properly and sees what Harm Reduction and Insite are all about. He wants to help the addicts out of that hell and back to being productive members of society where Insite and its proponents seem to want to carry on with thier failed experiement to justfy their lofty budgets.
I support Clement and the Conservative approach on drugs. I say close Insite down and spend the money on treatment.
Absurd. Letting people die does not help them. The conservative party spends 70% of the drug policy budget on policy and only 5% on treatment...yeah, he really wants to spend the money on treatment.
And, by the way, the federal government pays nothing toward insite. Nothing. Not a dime. So the "spend on treatment" strawman is just bogus.
Finally, I'm not sure how a program that has been peer-reviewed more than 20 times and found to work can be called "failed." Does prohibition work?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Have you seen the people on the streets of the DTES? I work with them, most are the walking dead. 25% and 40% HIV, at saturation for HEP C and even TB is making a big comeback. wow, Insite sure is making a dent. Even if it is 5% (your numbers) , it is more than the previous federal and provincial gov't have done together.
Peer review??? look at some objectives reviews. They all say the science is bogus.
If there is no treatment, it is doomed to fail and there is no treatment with Insite.
Peer-reviewed research is the standard. I doubt that one can truly have objective research about this issue (or maybe any). But if you have some, cite it.
Of course I've seen the people in the DTES. What I see is people being re-victimized by prohibition. Your "big dent" argument is a strawman again. Nobody thinks insite can make a big dent. It makes a little dent. That's why we need more injection sites (among many other harm reduction interventions) and less prohibition.
Get your facts straight, ice dude. The 25% + HIV rates among Injection drug users aren't a result of Insite, Insite is a result of those high rates. What we had before Insite wasn't working. And in case you didn't notice (and it wouldn't surprise me if you hadn't - Minister Clement sure hasn't) HIV rates are down. I agree that treatment is necessary, and without it, a piece is missing. But treatment is good for those who are ready to quit. We also have to take care of those who are still using.
The conservatives are such cheapos. They dont give any money to help VCH. The election coming up will be a minority again.
You get these guys from Alberta and Ontario and they only care about a couple things. Getting reelected, their friends, lining their pockets with our money
This is the joke. They claim that "treatment is better" but they seem to forget that the lack of treatment is why we need InSite!
And the elephant in the room, which no one wants to tackle -- *why does Clement and his cronies prop up organized crime by opposing InSite, and more importantly, an expanded NAOMI program?* Geez... talk about a self fulfilling prophecy.
Why is Clement so fixated on "palliative care"? It's his only trump card. I thought paliative care meant to care for someone who is unable to, but he corrected me "It means to care for someone until he dies". All the people trying to get palliative care for their elderly parents must appreciate that comment. Everyone intelligent suports it. Another reason the Cons should be voted out. THEY are abominable, not the safe injection sites.
