  • I don't know, I never liked Tess, she is TOO naïve, & then too stubborn, but STUPIDLY stubborn. She never makes up her mind or decides to get rid of Alec, she just runs, an intelligent woman would haverealized that when running doesn't work one has to at least TRY to fight back. & after Angel left her IQ level only got lower IMO.

Angel is & always was in the books ANNOYINGLY moral, preeching about the bad religion and good labour.

The only character and disorder I liked was Alec & his obsession.

  • @TheGuardianizz

It's true, Tess is niave and innocent, she's a peasant girl with little education and up until she met Alec and Angel her world was simple and straight forward, she also has no role model from her parents or older sibling therefore bumbles along best she can.

I agree with you totally on Angel.

Alec is a raping bastard, and at the end of the day it's the hapless child of nature Tess who is the real hero, and i think in Hardys novel he fairly acknowledges this.

  • @Woodlander65 I suppose that in order to make his point, or show the moral message behind the movie, Hardy had to create a character such as Tess, and it is hard for women of our generation to understand the level of her innocence. The thing is, that even if the modern woman remains a virgin till the day she marries (which is rare) she still would have seen sex scenes on TV, read novels about corruption of innocence. So if you haven't grown up at a convent, you couldn't be as naïve as Tess.

  • @TheGuardianizz

I can understand that, but i see Tess as a blank-page in life, and what else should a 16yo girl be at that age? Whether back then or today. She was still a fledgling in life and needed to be taken under someones wing (Hence Tess's teacher at Marlott where she should of been given the chance to continue her education).

As for a 16yo girl today it is vastly worse, Peer Pressure, Media, Internet, binge drinking and still lack of education to this day are making the young...con.

  • con)...miserable and unsociable and in a place where they shouldnt be. I am talking of the minority i know, but the point is i would rather be in the 1890s mindset on life than today's corrupted swamp on this issue.

As for the virgin thing until married, it's a rare thing that a partner will confess all of their history, and its not pressed either, because anyone can deny it therefore making us not as honest, but it would serve no purpose.

Anyway, sometimes when i'm reading the book i go...

  • ...through different ways on how the story went. Good fun when one is out on a stroll.

  • @Woodlander65 Excellent comment...but the book is not about morals, it is about bad timing

  • @transfoby Perhaps, but it's also about the failing and lack of real compassion in man. There's a part in the book that Angel on the night of Tess's confession is so upset that in his so called sleep he carrys her off to a graveyard nearby the Durberville's seat and rests her creepily on top of a stone grave, claiming Tess had died a death.

Then before they departed he said "I wish half the women in England were as respectable as you."

    Such inconsistent behaviour from clare.

  • @TheGuardianizz Well, I was naive as her and still am

  • @transfoby It's an admirable quality to be in part naive and innocent in today's society, i would defenitely encourage that, it certainly makes us become better human-beens.

We lose the corruption and bitterness inside ourselves when we go to our better selves, and we all have them, but its our goodness that locks that side away.

But i would also say be aware of today's Alec's and people like him and worse as well. Thankyou.

  • @Woodlander65 Thank you, but unfortunatelly....

  • @TheGuardianizz I have to point again that nothing has changed...This kind of stories still happen. It is not a story about morals as much as miscomunication.

  • @TheGuardianizz Well, Alec is the devil...seductive and manipulative whe knows what he is, and this is suposed to make him likable. Is Angel, then, evil by omission? It is this ambiguity of what is good and what is evil that makes this story brilliant

  • i dont care how bad alec is i cant help liking him more that angel...

  • why is tess so stubborn? the guy is willing to take care of her and her family

  • ..he raped her, that's why. she's upset and i dont blame her!

  • @pkasrey did you read it?

  • I have to say that the uk has the best writers movies and actors ...
