Just got my Studio XPS 16 and now they have the Blu-Ray drive that writes. They had an option for a Radeon HD 1GB instead of the standard 512MB but the 512 is great for me, although I'm not an extreme gamer... I just use my Xbox 360 lol.
Hey I got this same laptop and it's pretty tight but the guy on the phone never gave me the option to choose which screen I want and I got the wled by default. I got this laptop because of all it can do and for the fact that I heard the display was supposed to be gorgeous and even though it doesn't look bad it doesn't look much better than other laptops out there and now I just found out it's because I didn't get the RGB.
Is the RGB really that much better than the WLED? I really want a laptop with a wonderful display. Is there anyway to change my screen, like purchase a rgb screen and replace my current screen or can I have dell do that for me? I still got 2 more days to return it if I want to. I just don't know what to do. I really want the RGB display but I'm stuck with the fucking wled.
Those who got the 720p WLED screen were pretty satisfied with the display. The 1080p screen costs $250 more for the upgrade, and of course many have raved about it. I went for the 720p screen (I've yet to receive mine!), I could get a huge monitor with that kind of $. I bet 1080p screens will be more standard in the future, and I'll prolli be getting a new laptop by then.
I called Dell about this issue and they said it's possible for me to upgrade so no need on returning it and ordering a new one with the specs I want (as a response to djmrema) however I was dissatisfied with the representative I was speaking to because she told me the price of the RGB screen is nearly 500 dollars and this is not just shipping and installation, this is just for the screen. She told me I would need to find a technician to install it or set it up myself.
Which would probably cost another couple hundred dollars. I've known about the price being 250 for a while now and that's exactly what I told her that the price to upgrade to the RGB is only 250 so she responded by saying that's probably from a third party retailer but I got the feeling she was trying to rip me off. She also said the price for a 9 cell battery is $150 which is just bs. They won't even accept my laptop to be sent in.
Are there any alternative retailors where I can purchase an RGB display for much cheaper than what dell is offering me with full installation? I don't dislike the wled screen but I'm not all too thrilled. The font and windows look brilliant even with the wled but the picture and video quality's are what's upsetting me specially since I do a lot of video editing. Well the Compaq has 3gb of ram and its expandable to 4gb. The reason im getting a budget computer is because my parents wont let me get anything over 500. and the Compaq is only 400 but with the warrenty its 600. Were in some pretty bad debt problems. BTW instead of windows vista, Im gonna change it to Linux. :D

I've just ordered this system. However, i read the review for the Graphics Card, and it has been categorized as a second class 2 mid-range GPU, and not tier 1.

In power saver mode with the screen brightness to the lowest with a 9 cell i get over 4 hours battery life, but just normal 9 cell high performance i get over 2 hours while playing games its like an 1 hour 30 min

I have windows vista 64bit HOME EDITION and my freind has the software for windows vista ultimate. if i take it of him and want to install it can i just do a stright forward upgrade or do i have to re install all windows and start all over again?????
Actually formatting vista is much easier, remember u will lose some of the software that came with u r system. That may not be in the recovery CD.If u partition u gonna LOSE everything including your recovery space. Before you do that make sure u contact dell and explain the prob first, see what they tell u. What are u r specs and what type of screen do u have? Is it 1080p? resolution? It is important to know.
No its 720p.. the 1 that comes with it by default.. i dint upgraded the scree.. other specs r 4 gb ddr3, core 2 duo 8600, 2.4 ghz... so then tell me apart from the partition option hw can i divide my hard disk.. sm1 said that we can shrink the main drive into 2 other drives.. bt wen i tried it cud only provide me wid a 20 gb partition... suggest me smthin...
That is a bit problematic, i wish i could give u a straight answer. The only other thing i can think of is to do over again and reinstall an os allover again or check online for program to shrink hard drives. Sorry, couldn't be more helpful.
nw the thing is by default my lapi came wid 2 partitions. 1 of 282 gb and d other is recovery drive of 15 gb. nw i want that 282 gb to be divide into 3 partitions like 50 gb for the windows drive dn the rest space divided into 2 drives... plus the recovery drive to be remained as its is. djmrema the line during the playback your speaking of is the VSYNC, you need to turn it on or off I dont remember, but I've had the same problem on several computers, also it could be a driver that malfunctioning so if vsync settings does not work try a different driver. NO this is not an insult. It's actually a problem with this dell studio xps that I have. When I play a movie or any video I get a line across the screen. I contacted dell and they said nothing is wrong with all the test they did. I want to know if anyone else experince this problem. Window Vista64 bit and Vista32 bit uses completely different processors. A 64bit processor and 32bit processor respectively. Vista64bit drivers/software are not compatible with vista32bit. If you use your computer for photo/video editing programs or other processor sucking programs then a vista64bit is your answer. In the near future there are going be program that requires more RAM and vista32 is not going to do it. Just to add in, Vista64 Ultimate can handle over 128GB of RAM. That's huge!
In, addition a 64bit processor, will process the same information that 32bit will process in just half a time, so it has more bandwidth, meaning you will do more in a short time.
many people told me not to go for the 64bit proccessor as it will not be compatable with programes like skype, msn etc and it has compatability problems is this true would ii have these types of problems?
Many of the compatibilities issues are being solved by software manufacturer. They are making many vista64bit compatible softwares, it won't be an issues in the next few mos.However, it depends on your use. I don't have a prob with msn and don't know about skype.
come think of it, you may not get any benefit of using eSATA port from an USB source because data tranfer rate will still be upto 480mbps. And the one I showed you may not work depending if your portable HD USB source type, most are 5pins.WIth 5pins you gonna need more than one adaptor.

This one is Radeon 3670 with 512 memory, but the one you can get today destroys it.
Now you can get the Radeon 4670 with 1 GB memory, and a Core i7 processor and blu ray for a very reasonable $1300 if you ask me.

However currently the costs are around 4x more then a HDD. (64gb SSD for the same price of a 250 gb HDD.)
Booting up from a SSD is insanely quick, since it doesent need to look for information.

Im actually getting a studio xps 13 at Best Buy (best place to get computers) which is 900 and will get the job done. go onto bestbuy and look around.but u go with whatever I guess. just to give u an idea what a good gaming computer would be is atleast 3gb of ram, a nvidia graphics card w/ atleast 128mb of shared/discreet memory, and a dual-core processor, or a fast single core (2.5ghz atleast)

Well the Compaq has 3gb of ram and its expandable to 4gb. The reason im getting a budget computer is because my parents wont let me get anything over 500. and the Compaq is only 400 but with the warrenty its 600. Were in some pretty bad debt problems. BTW instead of windows vista, Im gonna change it to Linux. :D

I've just ordered this system. However, i read the review for the Graphics Card, and it has been categorized as a second class 2 mid-range GPU, and not tier 1.
This is what it says for class 2 cards. - "These cards should be able to display all current games with fluent framerates but not all with high detail settings. Especially demanding games like Crysis, Age of Conan, or Mass Effect are only playable with lower settings..."

In power saver mode with the screen brightness to the lowest with a 9 cell i get over 4 hours battery life, but just normal 9 cell high performance i get over 2 hours while playing games its like an 1 hour 30 min

This nb may not be an ideal for carrying around. It is too bulky and heavy about 6.4lbs. A 13inch will be very good.

Actually formatting vista is much easier, remember u will lose some of the software that came with u r system. That may not be in the recovery CD.If u partition u gonna LOSE everything including your recovery space. Before you do that make sure u contact dell and explain the prob first, see what they tell u. What are u r specs and what type of screen do u have? Is it 1080p? resolution? It is important to know.

No its 720p.. the 1 that comes with it by default.. i dint upgraded the scree.. other specs r 4 gb ddr3, core 2 duo 8600, 2.4 ghz... so then tell me apart from the partition option hw can i divide my hard disk.. sm1 said that we can shrink the main drive into 2 other drives.. bt wen i tried it cud only provide me wid a 20 gb partition... suggest me smthin...

That is a bit problematic, i wish i could give u a straight answer. The only other thing i can think of is to do over again and reinstall an os allover again or check online for program to shrink hard drives. Sorry, couldn't be more helpful.

nw the thing is by default my lapi came wid 2 partitions. 1 of 282 gb and d other is recovery drive of 15 gb. nw i want that 282 gb to be divide into 3 partitions like 50 gb for the windows drive dn the rest space divided into 2 drives... plus the recovery drive to be remained as its is. Can u help me on this.. i kknw how to format using windows XP.. bt no idea on this vista. moreover i wana use Vista home premium the original dvd sent by dell & nt ny pirated 1.. so hw shud i do the partitions.

djmrema the line during the playback your speaking of is the VSYNC, you need to turn it on or off I dont remember, but I've had the same problem on several computers, also it could be a driver that malfunctioning so if vsync settings does not work try a different driver. NO this is not an insult. It's actually a problem with this dell studio xps that I have. When I play a movie or any video I get a line across the screen. I contacted dell and they said nothing is wrong with all the test they did. I want to know if anyone else experince this problem. DO you mind to let me know when you get your laptop if u experience the same?

Window Vista64 bit and Vista32 bit uses completely different processors. A 64bit processor and 32bit processor respectively. Vista64bit drivers/software are not compatible with vista32bit. If you use your computer for photo/video editing programs or other processor sucking programs then a vista64bit is your answer. In the near future there are going be program that requires more RAM and vista32 is not going to do it. Just to add in, Vista64 Ultimate can handle over 128GB of RAM. That's huge!

In, addition a 64bit processor, will process the same information that 32bit will process in just half a time, so it has more bandwidth, meaning you will do more in a short time.

Many of the compatibilities issues are being solved by software manufacturer. They are making many vista64bit compatible softwares, it won't be an issues in the next few mos.However, it depends on your use. I don't have a prob with msn and don't know about skype.

Check this out on ebay "USB 2.0 to eSATA Cable Adapter for PC" You ganna have to have an external power adaptor for your Portable Hard drive.

come think of it, you may not get any benefit of using eSATA port from an USB source because data tranfer rate will still be upto 480mbps. And the one I showed you may not work depending if your portable HD USB source type, most are 5pins.WIth 5pins you gonna need more than one adaptor.

No, it doesn't have a wifi catcher. If you gonna need RAM memmory over 3MB then you need to have Vista64bit. Vista 32bit can only recognise upto 3MB.
