  • To the people arguing, it doesn't matter where it was invented. It matters WHO invented it. And dual-citizenship is completely irrelevent. The country they were born in is their nationality. It was invented by a Canadian. But I wouldn't consider it a Canadian sport.

It's fucking awful. So I'm glad it never stuck here.

  • i guss he did not need the peach baskets back

  • too bad canadians play hockey ...

  • @MegaWeirdo11 see if you can access w w w. histori. ca from your school. it contains the 1 min clip, as well as a detialed description

  • It's kind of ironic that there is only one Canadian basketball team left- the Raptors.

  • @RazorCell7 You changed the focus of my comment....Naismith was a Canadian (not dual citizenship at time of invention.) who invented basketball in America, not Canada. Naismith never lived in Canada after moving to the USA. I have never read that others considered him an idiot, and he wasn't (look at his many degrees!). His game was adopted very quickly worldwide, and I have never read that people thought it was a stupid game. Is there a source for these statements I can read?

  • @KUHistory Well, Naismith competed with his brothers throwing a ball into a peach basket on their Canadian Orchard. Transforming this individual competition into a team sport occured in the USA with the participation and feedback of the young American men who stayed at the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) where Naismith worked. I'm Canadian, and this is an American sport IMO. Developed, played, and loved in America moreso than in any other country. No one can argue with that.

  • As a kid I always assumed they'd just ignored the old man's desire to not have the bottom cut out of his baskets.

Now I realize cutting a small hole was a compromise to allow him to still use them for peaches, while quickly poking the ball out with a broom.

But I still prefer my original interpretation of it.

  • They never actually cut the peach basket at the bottom... total revisionist history. People used ladders to get the ball until 1893 when an English minister named Nicholas McKay took the game to Indiana and had a blacksmith forge 2 metal hoops and put coffee sacks at the bottom.

  • I wonder how many Americans would admit or even relalize that basketball was invented in Canada?

  • Actually the game was not invented in Canada. It was invented in the USA by a Canadian, who later became an American.

  • @KUHistory It's called a dual citizenship and he still lived in Canada. Infact many people have dual citizenships in any two countries; it's nothing uncommon espically when you have to work overseas. In this case he had to work in the US. In anycase he wasn't an American citizen when he invented the game and infact many of the Americans he worked with all called him an idiot and thought it was a stupid game. Basketball was a Canadian invention not an American one.

  • @corky7ca Nobody would. Because it's factually inaccurate. Silly goose.

  • @Since1845 I didn't realize until I read some comments here. I knew he was Canadian and assumed it was in Canada. I am a silly goose.

  • too bad no canadians are good at playing the damn sport we made :P

  • @rtsoccerplayer You should go back to your dolls kid, before 2 time NBA MVP Steve Nash, of Victoria B.C. kicks your ass.

  • @bigben0316 lol i know, but can you name any other canadians that are good at basketball? didn't think so

  • @rtsoccerplayer Samuel Dalembert, Joel Anthony, Andy Rautins, Jamaal Magloire, Cory Joseph and Tristan Thompson.

    Now go to your room.

  • @bigben0316 how many medals in the olympics did canadians win for basketball? just one silver medal in 1936.

    I am in my room

  • LOL, imagine if the NBA was still like this. Everytime LeBron scores, some old guy takes 2 minutes to grab a ladder and place it under the net and get the ball out.

  • @hotgirlsarehot HAHAHA THAT'D BE AWESOME!

  • i wish these were still going on. i remember growing up and watching them, finding them amusing, but never actually realizing that these stories were real.

  • Then black people stole it.. jk! No but the guy probably never got his baskets back..

  • 3 people didn't get their baskets back

  • Comment removed

  • montreal deserves an NBA team

  • pretty much if it wasn't for Canada Shaq and all thouse basket ball player would be out of a job so on behalf of canada your welcome

  • Two people needed their baskets back.

  • the yankees think they invented basketballl as well as it was first played in usa ha ha what a joke.

  • McGill university? Isn't this the same place that invented football from rugby? and of course a canadian invented a sport and it was also a rough sport at the time but now that it's in the hands on these fuckin pathetic americans basketball is not rough any more. youtube.com/watch?v=Bycs-0t8VWA

  • Poor guy. He needed his baskets back and they made him cut out the bottom anyways.

  • @agorlewski

Well, as long as whatever he needs those baskets for is bigger than the small hole that was cut into the basket, he's still ok....

Being Canadian, I'm sure the coach was more than polite when discussing how to go about it... ;-)

  • I Love it! "But I need thes baskets back" and next thing you know he is sawing through the bottom.

P.S. I agree with Nagirdnul. In fact "the medium IS the message".

  • QUEBEC HAS DONE LOTS OF GOOD THINGS FOR THE WORLD!

    WE INVENTED BASKET BALL

    that alone is canadian tradition.

  • And yet, we bloody suck at basketball

  • @Corvus133 That's starting to change. Don't let the results at the FIBA Worlds fool you: Canada is starting to produce a ton of highly-recruited talent in the GTA that NCAA schools are nabbing left, right and centre, including one 16 year-old Toronto kid that is already being projected as a possible top five pick in three years. It will take time but there are finally starting to be a lot more talented players.

  • is this some kind of canadian joke sir

  • "is this some kind of candien Joke sir"

  • Great vid ... but they chose such terrible actors! Very thick Ontario accents - but we know the Feds are not going to fund any arts outside Ontario so we have to live with it.

  • lol basketball is canadian, we should have more people enjoy it up here

  • Up here?

your info indicates that you are in the USA.

  • oh.. thats because i get harassed when i was Canadian, i kept getting hate messages i just changed it

  • Very classy

So you are a coward on all fronts then.

  • clearly

  • @TheStar73 Yeah, especially with Steve Nash and his dazzling moves.

  • lol i remember this from my childhood. I miss canada:(

  • "Now it places the lotion in the basket".

"But I need these baskets back!"

"Put the fucking lotion in the basket!"

  • It seemed pretty violent back then, they were all, like, tackling each other, kind of like football.

  • I remember this commercial so badly :)

  • "Hundred years after James Smith from Ontario invented it. Basketball was playing hundreds of millions around the world"

    ...

Of those hundreds of millions leagues popped up...people paid millions during a recession to play a game...driving big shiny cars when gas prices sky rocketed...sold themselves for endorsements...and slept with many beautiful people.

  • But I need these baskets back

  • We mock these, but those in my peer group can quote every one of these commercials line for line. Whoever created these commercials got what they wanted, we've never forgotten these commercials. We still say "I smell burnt toast", "Now the people will know we were here", "But I think he means the houses, the village", and, of course, "But I need these baskets back!" just to name a few. These commercials had a huge impact on Canadian children growing up in the early 90s.

  • i know right? thats why i came back, to see them all again. i missed them

  • So, what you're saying is... they're "A Part of our Heritage"?

  • whenever my PC is being slow i scream "come on! come on! ACKNOWLEDGE!"

  • I can vouch for that. I loved watching these on TV.

  • @Nagirdnul they still come on cbc a bit

  • Grab some skates and a stick and ill show you.

  • Drib-bel? What is "drib-bel? Durrrrr

  • Dribble. It's when you bounce the ball on the ground with one hand.

  • but I need these baskets back! Lol he never gets those damn baskets back.

  • duh! and he naver will.
