This was an extremely high budget film. If you know anyhting about the history of the film, you would know that quite a bit of footage was scrapped, including everything directed by Richard Thorpe or that contained Buddy Ebsen as the Tin Woodman (although there are a few shots from the back that are still Ebsen). The stills from the Thrope period are not hard to find--anything with the Wicked Witch of the West's hair down or that show Dorothy's hair blond (to match Neill's art) was scrapped..

I'm guessing this is one of the nine children that was hired to be a background Munchkin. Maybe it was even Donna Stewart (Hardaway). Most of the Munchkin actors were professionals, but they wanted more than they could get and put kids in the background.

if in doubt, watch the movie, i dont know about anyone else but if i saw a dead person i would not keep singing and dancing IF someone did kill them selves on set someone there would have seen it i also after finding said dead person, the footage would be reviewed A) to be sure they werent broadcasting a suicide (remember this is from BEFORE a time when elvis shaking his hips wasnt allowed to be shown) & B) to show police so foul play could be ruled out,

Okay you can't really see it in this vid but go in a dif one and you can see the girls arms move. And read a couple comments below me the noose is a hat. If she was hanging she would sway in time like a metronome. She doesn't she slows down and speeds up and you can see her legs moving and carrying her. So obviously not true.

Ok. To clear this up! A munchkin is dead in that scene! I've watched the footage over a million times! It is dead! Its arms never sway, its feet only drag on the ground a little, and she never moves her head. And if no one else is dancing under a tree, with a noose on their neck, with out moving arms, and floats off the ground. Why would she?

@f8talh8red not realy, depending on the height of the drop, she would if it didnt break her neck at the exact point of the rope being streachd to its limit, shed choke and make a scene, but if it was high enough to snap her neck then shed just drop and swing as she did, the evidence points to the latter, she droppd and boke her neck, look at the contorted figure of her neck and the discoloration of her.

Just to be clear...

A friend of mine's girlfriend's aunt was actually one of the munchkins in the Wizard of Oz and she knew the munchkin that had killed herself. What happened was she wanted the part as Dorthy but instead they chose Judy Garland. She was very upset about this and thought this would be kind of a cruel way to "get back at them" so to speak.

Now I'm not saying that it was this scene in particular but at some point a munchkin did in fact kill herself.

Actually I don't think that a munchkin hung themselves. Her "noose" was a hat and if you watch you can see her hands moving as well as her leg going from side to side. Just because she wasn't in the other shot doesn't mean she hung herself.

Yes this is a hanging munchkin. But that is how munchkin justice was carried out. Theirs is a different culture than ours, you must understand. This munchkin was caught selling munchkin secrets to the Wicked Witch of The North East. That is a capital offense in munchkinese deserving of the death penalty.
