  • Upgrading my 17" 8.5 (late 2011) MBP to 16GB later today, Perhaps I'll make a video.

  • Don't touch the gold part and starts touching the gold part :D

  • 10:00 for benchmarks

  • Would you be able to do this to a macbook air aswell? Because I haven't seen you update the ram in a macbook air.

  • do i have to do backup and other stuff before upgrading memory?

  • @MsFAMELADYGAGA not ram but hard drive upgrades you do

  • You can buy the exact same 8gb kit on ebay for $34 with free shipping...

  • how come your overall score went down with the new ram?

  • would 8gb ram from pny be good?

  • Does this void your warranty???

  • @YK9Helper no when u remove the apple ones dont take off the sticker off the ram that will void warranty

  • @YK9Helper No. Memory and Harddrives are the only thing Apple lets you change out without voiding their warranty. They might require you to put the old memory back in if you're having problems to prove its not the memory that is creating the issue though.

  • b careful that you've got the ram in the correct way. i blown about 5 computers coz i put the ram in the wrong way

  • can you upgrade the mem to more than 8 gb?

  • @MultiPumpaction I don't think any Macbook Pro's memory can go over 8GB

  • @gkc25 It can go to 16gb.

  • @MultiPumpaction 16GB works in them.

  • @MultiPumpaction yes you can buy two 8gb chips to get 16gb

thats pretty expensive and its not really necessary unless you're doing 10 hours of final cut pro editing on a daily basis.

  • Why did the geekbench total benchmark decrease after the RAM upgrade? That seems a little backwards to me.

  • I was thinking all day long to get or not two of these of 4 GB each for my MBP 13" 2.3 GHz i5 early 2011. Got 4 GB of Ram and is fast, is just that Amazon got an 8 GB kit (2x4 GB) for $35, I just don't want to be too ambitious. Your video was very helpful and convinced me seriously on purchasing Crucial RAM, if I decided to buy, for the moment they are in the wish list.

  • maybe you would need the wrist strap if you were installing memory in 1983 but rather be safe then sorry i guess

  • Comment removed

  • I have an early 2011 13" MBP. How do I upgrade to 8GB RAM?

  • @TaTeRoxx Watch this video.

  • @davomrmac Would it be the same or similar for mid 2010 mbp?

  • @BlobIslandGame Yes, virtually the same.

  • @PcCareable It should do.

  • @PcCareable I have only ever used on a Mac and they seem good n fast to me, they do performance RAM too for high end PC's if that is what you are after.

  • @PcCareable I have never experienced any problems with them, great customer service too.

  • I have an early 2011 13" MBP. How do I upgrade to 8GB RAM? Do I just buy another 4GB RAM and install it in the free RAM slot? Thanks

  • @J888HNT No. You need to buy SPECIFICALLY, 2 X 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 204 Pin RAM sticks. You could also buy 1066 Mhz speed sticks in that specification.

  • Fantastic guide, but I've read that you should remove the battery first. Any insights into this?

  • @llcooljes This is not something you need to do, nor can you remove the battery on this model.

  • Great vid but you were wrong about the bandwidth score, it's easily visible that it is a 4 but you read it as 5 followed by the other 3 values...

  • I've got an iMac with 2x2GB. Can have up to 4x4GB, thinking about using Crucial. Is it as simple as just swapping the 2GBs for the 4GBs? No drawbacks at all? Is 16GB even worth it? (I'm about to start an industry-based video editing course.)

  • Great Vid Dave, just upgraded mine £40 from crucial !

  • @NickRno77 great VFM! congrats!

  • @woahvlad Two.

  • is it okay if i did not use any of the anti static wrist strap?

  • @devitoperdana You can, but at your own risk!

  • @davomrmac so it is okay to do the upgrade just in a carpet mat?

  • @devitoperdana Carpet would be the last place I would do it, carpet produces static plus a lot of dust.

  • @davomrmac where'd you reckon to do it? is mattress would be fine?

  • @devitoperdana Anti-static mat, or a clear table with an anti-static wrist strap. The wrist straps cost around £8.

  • @davomrmac okay than. that was really helpful. thanks a lot mate, appreciate it

  • I'm not sure where to plug my antistatic wrist strap. It's an aligator clip so I can't plug it into the ground of an outlet and I don't have an antistatic mat. So do I have to plug it in a metal part of the macbook pro? Where?

  • @Oliicx Mine is plugged into a socket under my desk.

  • its ok mate i was curious to see what brand it is so i can just upgrade using that memory... i have a 2011 13" macbook pro.. thats why i asked thanks mate

  • @davomrmac what brand is the chipset that apple has pre-installed in the new macbook pros for memory?

  • @slayerdude10 Sorry not sure.

  • Where did you get that screw driver from? I am thinking about upgrading my MBP 13" to 8GB RAM (from Crucial) and I need a screw driver. Thanks so much.

  • @MasterMarro They are not available now.

  • @davomrmac Can you recommend any other screwdrivers that would work with most Macs? Thanks.

  • @MasterMarro Most will be fine, you just need the right size tips. If you can find my one it is a Kamasa.

  • @davomrmac Alright thank you, the only thing I am worried about is not having the right size...

  • love the accent!!

  • I got some compatible patriot ram did everything you said worked fine but 10 mins in the macbook froze and started beeping i tryed pulling it out and doing it again had the same problem so i put my old ram back in works fine any ideas?

  • @koblinz Bad or wrong type RAM, Macs can be fussy sometimes.

  • I guess performance is the true sign in the end. How does the battery life stand up when upgrading? I'm assuming it will affect it yes?

  • @horatiohornblower197 Only slightly.

  • Here mate you really sound like Stuart 'psycho' Pearce.

I have a question for you psycho, on the geekbench test overall the upgrade score was lower. I'm assuming performance improves with the upgrade so how does it come out lower? Many thanks mate.

Im getting REAL close to buying a MacBook pro sick of windows choking on me plus the macs look really solid and reliable. Again many many thanks video is clear and concise will be upgrading mine when I man up and make the switch:)!!

  • @horatiohornblower197 I think it is due to the benchmark addressing more memory, I am not really sure, but overall the responsiveness of the system is greatly improved.

  • #0 can strip the screws very easily. #000 or #0000 work best.

  • How did you not lose all of your data after you took out your old memory?

  • @TheJaredism Data is stored on the hard drive not on the memory.

  • @kashz1 Only this one youtube[.]com/watch?v=qKtCR5Z5CpU or this one youtube[.]com/watch?v=xzriBx5V_wM

  • once you have installed the new memory on the mackbook pro the first time you power on with the new memory do you need to install any software so it can read the new memory? or automatically does it?

  • @isai146 no, nothing to change or add.

  • oh i got a question it may be stupid but i have one do you have to boot up the machine for the first time to upgrade or can you just do it out of the box thanks bye

  • I installed the same RAM as you, in the same computer. and then i started getting this troubleshootings. i have gotten several warnings saying that i have to manually turn the mac of by holding the powerbutton down. but when i changed back, it stopped.

    Help Please

  • @zippguitaro This was a kernel panic, really indicates you have faulty or incompatible RAM.

  • @davomrmac well, nothing i can do about that.

    thanks for helping

  • Hey can some one help me i Have macbook pro 2011 and its i7 2.0 4gb and i am looking to upgrade to 8gb ram but i have never found any ram that is for my mac and its cl=2 or cl=3 can some one give me the source link were i can buy this ram?

  • @yuri1s go to crucial...its like 89 bucks with freee shipping right now and they make it easy as hell to figure out whats right for your mac...and if you dont know what mac you have they a scanner...also dont buy from apple its like 400 bucks..its just ridiculous when you can get the same thing for a quarter of the price.

  • thanks for the video but can i suggest in the future that you switch your camera to manual focus to avoid it hunting during the show

  • Would it be possible to replace the AMD graphics card in this?

  • Absolutely Brilliant mate

  • Hi, is this process exactly the same the for 2011 macbook pro 13"? Also are you positive this wont void the extended applecare warranty? Thanks mate

  • @mrbluesky22 Process is the same, RAM is a user accessible part so will not void warranty. However, you do so at your risk, so if in doubt check with Apple. Also, it would void your warranty if for example you broke the memory slots whilst putting the memory in.

  • @davomrmac Thanks for replying, sorry to be a pain in the arse with the questions, I picked up a 13" macbook pro and im loving it. I have upgraded to ram to 8gb but before i do the hdd do you know the maximum capacity for both sata and ssd. Cheers again

  • @mrbluesky22 not sure there is a limit. I would say it'll top out at about 750GB for HD, 320GB for SSD.

  • @davomrmac Thanks, ill bang a 750gb sata drive in and hope for the best!

  • is there a full review of this up yet?

  • @hicktownkids 20th April for the full review.

  • How is the other side of the strap connected to earth? I've done a Macbook memory upgrade before but didn't use one.

  • @drummerkid1993 The wire is connected to the earth pin on a plug under my desk.

  • Dave, where did you get the screwdriver?

  • @visoak Direct from the manufacturer, not sure how to get one now. Kamasa.

  • was the pointing device that you used a chopstick

  • @magand26 No it was like a mixer type stick I was sent.

  • i cant get this in the U.S???

  • wow the cd drive is huge and i barely use it!

They should just remove it in the next generention

  • @eredthemaster. That was my concern was considering doing the same on my stock 15 i5 2010 MacBook pro but if getting lower scores is the result what's the point. Also can anyone answer why is it for the same ram upgrade apple wants to charge £320 (uk) when the memory in the video is around £80????!!!! Is Apples ram better quality or dipped in gold lol

  • @mugan78 On the store, if you configure it for build, is only £150 (but as im a student i get cheaper when i get one in summer)

  • If i were you, I'd rather upgrade the stock 5400 rpm hard drive to an SSD.

  • with 8gb of ram u have to put it into 64bit mode so do that and you will get way better performance

  • i know this is apple and all but is the process similar to pc computers?

  • @j510t very similar.

  • 8gb isn't the max, 16gb is

  • @DannyC440 From the Apple website… 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1333MHz DDR3 memory; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 8GB.

  • @davomrmac 7 more videos till you hit 1000 :D

  • awesome tutorial Dave good job!

  • @TheTechMundo Thanks.

  • lol i fix macs every day and never wear a strap, if your bench in grounded you're okay

  • @ldneagle lol, can't win, thought I had better show how people should do it to be sure.

  • @ldneagle Same. Sort of silly to use one.

  • When are you going to do a review of this MacBook pro?

  • @hking162 soon.

  • Hi dave are you aware if comet changed theyre return policy regarding the ipad 2 since you managed to get a refund?

  • @adamsbil1 No change as far as I know, I was right all along, so you just have to fight (politely) for it.

  • dave, your number of videos are hitting 1000 soon! you should do another contest, with awards again. or something new to surprise us! :)

  • lol @ 6:18 i checked my mail cause of the sound in the video.

  • Hmm... The superdrive looks different?... On my MBP 17" mid-2009 has an black cover on the Superdrive...

  • do a SE Xperia arc review soon plz ^^

  • is this the 13" MBP? my 2011 MBP base 15" gets 9750 on geekbench.. strange

  • @dbflip00z 15-inch

  • your video could be improved, you've done a novices guide to upgrading the ram then followed it with a bunch of figures asif any novice would know what your on about.

you should have done some application stress tests.

  • Adding RAM is a very simple process and this video was a good example of that.

Also going from a small amount of RAM to a larger amount can speed up a PC/Laptop quite a bit more than say 4gb to 8gb as was the case with me upgrading from 256mb RAM to 2gb on my sisters laptop which made it so much more responsive.

  • Can you also downgrade RAM?

  • @ceterafan123 Sure you can, but why?

  • @hasm0ney To get money.

  • @ceterafan123 If you need money, why did you get a mac in the first place?

  • @ceterafan123 You can, but theres no need the more RAM you have, the better computer you´ll have

  • jawb dave.

  • please do more of these and where the new programs reviews lol :)

  • love your videos dave awesome

  • why is the total score of the 8gb lower then 4gb total score

  • @eredthemaster I was running Screenflow on second score, took some points off.

  • Excellent Dave!

Can i do an 8GB upgrade to a 2009 Macbook pro???

    Cheers

  • @badhabitz69 Yes you can check cruical.com to get the right RAM for your computer.

  • Excellent Dave!
