They made $15 to 20 an hour for sitting there & I made about $3 for working harder than they did.

Apparently the city has an operational airport, Bishop International but there is no passenger service. The city can still be reached by two interstate highways. It can be clearly seen from one of these. An abandoned building is the tallest structure in the skyline and the city appears uninhabited from that point. On entering the city there is some traffic, rusting old cars move slowly. There is no one on foot, virtually every building on its main street is abandoned. There is nothing here.

GM isn't completely to blame for Flint's plight. This is a simple supply and demand. The government allowed imports to flourish. Our own citizens turned their backs on American-made products. GM closes plants because they have lost 30% of the US market since Flint's heyday... they didn't just send the jobs to Mexico. In fact, only 5 GM vehicles (out of 54) for the US market are assembled in Mexico. It's sad to see Flint this way, but I'm a daughter of a GM worker here in Ohio, I've seen it all.

That is true that unions do not make business/design decisions, BUT.........they can interefe with progress by wanting and getting unrealistic wages for work performed and gravy attendeance policies that stress timetables. I'll admitt that GM and Chrysler are in trouble because of their own poor decisions, but it doesnt change the fact that the UAW is a leach on the american auto industry. Back when my great grandfather helped get the UAW in the Ford Rouge plant, they certainly put an end to the tyranny of the managers but today when my own father lost his job at a Tier 1 supplier, the UAW didnt even help my father find another job

actually the crime rates have dropped significantly since the new millennium began, and are on a steady decline. The problem we now have is an economy that cant produce more jobs and a government not being smart about it. Flint may have a future yet, they are attempting to turn into a college town and flip around the city they just need help and support from the public.
If our gov gives them the bailout the only thing that will be PROLONGED will be the retirement and health benefits. I am a student at Kettering (former GMI) in Flint and I work for General Motors and I am tired of hearing how GM ruined Flint. First of all there wouldn't be a Flint without GM. GM didn't just get up and abandon Flint, they still have a bus assembly facility here and they are going to be building the Chevy Volt engines in Flint. If Flint decided to waste all the money they were getting in taxes and not invest in bringing in other companies to diversify its jobs, that is the city's fault, not GMs

I think the auto industry is one of the few American industries that didn't totally turn there backs on the country. They've tried to keep building in this country and stay competitive but the American public turned their backs on them. .In the late 70's early 80's I used to bartend near Buick. EVERY day when I'd get in around 5 pm, the place had at least 25 workers sitting & drinking. They were on the clock. Then they'd say"hold that beer, I have to go & show my face before lunch". They'd go back & be back to the bar in 20 min.
They made $15 to 20 an hour for sitting there & I made about $3 for working harder than they did.
Total irresponsibility by the blue & white collar sent my town to the crapper.

Apparently the city has an operational airport, Bishop International but there is no passenger service. The city can still be reached by two interstate highways. It can be clearly seen from one of these. An abandoned building is the tallest structure in the skyline and the city appears uninhabited from that point. On entering the city there is some traffic, rusting old cars move slowly. There is no one on foot, virtually every building on its main street is abandoned. There is nothing here.

GM isn't completely to blame for Flint's plight. This is a simple supply and demand. The government allowed imports to flourish. Our own citizens turned their backs on American-made products. GM closes plants because they have lost 30% of the US market since Flint's heyday... they didn't just send the jobs to Mexico. In fact, only 5 GM vehicles (out of 54) for the US market are assembled in Mexico. It's sad to see Flint this way, but I'm a daughter of a GM worker here in Ohio, I've seen it all.

I'll admitt that GM and Chrysler are in trouble because of their own poor decisions, but it doesnt change the fact that the UAW is a leach on the american auto industry. Back when my great grandfather helped get the UAW in the Ford Rouge plant, they certainly put an end to the tyranny of the managers but today when my own father lost his job at a Tier 1 supplier, the UAW didnt even help my father find another job

The problem we now have is an economy that cant produce more jobs and a government not being smart about it. The American automakers are not in the pocket of the Govt. The Big 3 represent the 'little man', the blue collar worker...you know, the people our Govt. doesn't care about. Notice how quickly they bailed out Wall Street? Yet they left the millions of blue collar workers to worry over the holidays as to whether the companies they work for are going to get helped out...and if those workers are even going to have a job come January.

GM will do what it wants to do untill our gov gives them an ultimatum. Either GM brings the jobs back or they get the gov boot out of the country and are no longer able to conduct business in the U.S.A. But that will never happen GM would have it coming and so would the gov for letting this shit go on since GM started leaving us in the early 1980's after all the gov would benefit from taxing american auto workers. Our gov screwed itself as well as hurting us by coddling big business.

I mean the gov won't give the corporations stipulations on how they conduct their business here but yet they are petty enough to arrest people who have a little weed in their car. The gov is crooked as hell. What I mean by this is that YOU CAN'T BULLSHIT A BULLSHITTER. The gov knows that if they hand GM all that damn money first of all it isn't going to benefit the gov and we already know GM isn't going to return or even keep the few remaining american jobs secure with it NOOOO they are gonna run off with it. Now don't get me wrong I'm pro Union but the UAW got corrupt and greedy just like GM it's contracts with GM got weaker and weaker I'm what my neighbor calls "old" union when they actualy had some balls. I know it sounds radical but If our gov didn't coddle big business then our gov could have passed laws to prevent our jobs from going overseas the gov is 4 the people by the people and should have it's own people in it's best interest plus like I said we need the universal healthcare.

Just think in a worst case senario what if we got in a huge war and needed a bunch of auto factories to churn out millitary equipment and weapons you know like WW2. All of our factories are gone. GM a company who wouldn't be jack shit without the U.S took them down and here we are vunerable to whatever. Yet China a communist country has almost ALL of our factories to build ANYTHING they have a HUGE population. What if they decide to "liberate" us like we did to Iraq? Would GM care? answer NOPE.

They have raised tarrifs on imports thats why we don't have near the amount of interesting incredibly fuel efficient little vehicles out there aside from the size issue they have taxed the shit out the imports the foreign companies have gone through major red tape to get the cars they do have in the U.S.

Actually to give the foreign companies a little credit they have some factories here giving US some jobs when they certainly didn't have to, granted they ARE in the southern states but jobs in the U.S are jobs. They aren't enough jobs BUT they aren't from this country they never HAD to give us ANY jobs. GM is FROM the U.S where is their loyalty, The U.S MADE GM we never stopped buying their shit even when their vehicles were crap in the late 70's and 80's we HAVE loyalty where is GM's?

I am a student at Kettering (former GMI) in Flint and I work for General Motors and I am tired of hearing how GM ruined Flint. First of all there wouldn't be a Flint without GM. GM didn't just get up and abandon Flint, they still have a bus assembly facility here and they are going to be building the Chevy Volt engines in Flint. If Flint decided to waste all the money they were getting in taxes and not invest in bringing in other companies to diversify its jobs, that is the city's fault, not GMs

@ chevy266nova. In flint MI there are FEW foreign cars almost every damn one of the cars driving around are GM vehicles. GM took the jobs away because they wanted cheaper labor for MORE profit and they got the government tax breaks to make it easier to do so by using that saved money to build shops in china. This was GM's way of ridding itself of the UAW. It has nothing to do with foreign cars. But at this point we probably should buy foreign to pay GM back!

Why are we celebrating GM's 100th Anniversary?? General Motors donated $0.00 dollars to help support the celebration! However that didn't deter most of Flint's older leaders from still celebrating. Chrysler will soon be parted out and sold piecemeal - they will become a supplier like Delphi in about 3-5 years.
Ford will soon be irrelevant.

I think the auto industry is one of the few American industries that didn't totally turn there backs on the country. They've tried to keep building in this country and stay competitive but the American public turned their backs on them. IF GM agrees to bring ALL of our jobs back from the other countries and put up the factories that they have torn down example the one factory they took down recently is on dort highway in flint it's sad a open pit of nothing.
