Is it the genius of Neil Diamond that his song translate into R&B as well as country or reggae...all in one song? Neil is either generic as an artist or he has the sense and talent for the craft of pop music.

PURE CLASS. I REMEMBER GOING TO MANCHESTER JUST TO BUY THIS AND PLAYING IT CONSTANTLY FOR WEEKS. EVEN NOW SOME 30 YEARS LATER I STILL GET THAT TINGLE WHEN I HEAR IT.
Jimmy sang this on P&O's Ventura 27/3/10 and it was absolutely fantastic. The whole show was outstanding, he asked the audience to help "the old man" but believe me he needed no help. I was whoopin' and hootin' and had to apologise to the woman with a small child in front of me as I made that much noise, and learned it was his daughter and grandaughter. The wee girl wanted to see her Grandad in all three shows, wish I'd done the same! Thank you Jimmy for making my birthday one to remember!
I agree, it is a complicated song and this version does justice to the original, which is the forlorn song of an alcoholic's troubled soul. UB 40 made it a drinking dancing tune and amazingly both diametrically opposed versions are superb.
