  • Belts are used for mainly lifting weight that is well above your bodyweight such as 400lbs, 500lbs etc...and are really only used for deadlifts, squats and sometimes standing military presses. The belt is used to help cause more IAP (Intra Abdominal Pressure) which helps keep a stable core and a healthy neutral spine. Having the belt on you push out your abs against the belt which tightens your core.

  • I put a belt when I do squats and it helps

  • Lol I thought this was the troll jimmy struthers account :')

  • OMG too much talk man

  • there is nothing wrong with wearing a belt, however it is unnecessary and is often worn out of habit or is there for mental reassurance. i used to never lift without a belt because i thought i would get hurt, but now i parallel squat almost 3 times my body weight with no belt. A strong core and good form eliminates all need for belts

  • i have busted my lower back several times on both squats and dead lift. therefore i alway wear a belt on heavy lifts(5 reps or less) in these exercises.

  • My scyatica, my two hernia operations, and the fact that I do deadlifts and hypers for lower back and I dont need to make my waist bigger when I row. Why do people wear gloves, use chalk, or straps? Best question: why do people pay attention to what others are doing in the gym instead of focusing on their 12 set full arm workout?

  • talkin faster then the speed of listening

  • Sometimes it hurts me that people are allowed to freely express their thoughts and opinions. This is one example.

  • Idiot.

  • your a fucking moron

  • @MariuszBabi "you're"

  • Shit u!! u are too skinny and u should put on some weight onto ur mouth!!!!! FUCK YOU!!!!!!!

  • IAP = internal abdominal pressure

  • ur a useless cunt

  • Lol here comes Jimmy Struters !!!

  • @BrasilaParis i think that IS struthers !!!!! we found him, he does exist...........

  • try telling people like ronnie coleman that he's a sissy champ! clearly your not lifting enough to need a belt, but thats shown in the fact that ur doing 17 reps hahahaha

  • You frustrate me.

  • You're so skinny bro haha, you don't know shit.

  • just a little info weightbelts are not just for your. They are mainly used to pervent abdominal injury. When lifting heavy weights the belt helps give the abs something to push against.

  • people wear them when they are lifting a lot, and i messed my back up squating once and i understand that its bad strain on your back either way.. its there to make the stress on your back less.

  • lol *jimmy's mith training!!

  • Dumbass haha

  • You tell me someone that can fix pinched nerves throughout my lower back without a major surgery?

  • Where are your results? Haha Fucking idiot.

  • LOOK man I use a belt for the entire lifting session. A couple of years back I mest up my back pretty bad at work while using a 90 lbs. jackhammer. It took me about 3 months before I could even resume to start lifting heavy again. SO if you never have had an issue with your back don't speak about not using weight belts.

Sleeping on the floor with your feet resting on a chair every night for 2 months isn't fun. SO that's why I wear one. There's no match for that type of pain.

  • back belt? lifting heavy baby! the lower back is often the first failure in your form and so if you can support it and get the last few reps then thats where your going to get gains. Plus, your tiny, before i started gyming i was bigger than you, no ones going to listen to you at that size.

  • paste

  • just past the query string after watch?

  • v=J4ml9ogFO-g

watch the above video u hommie!!!

  • You are a skinny kid with no muscle acting like you know ish. Well, you don't know ish u geek.

  • omg its the real life Jimmy Struthers!!

  • Do you ever lift something heavier than 100 pounds?

  • you are a fucking idiot wow the belt is for fucking safety when lifting crazy weight provents fucking hernias

  • This guy is a syndrome...... WTF a Belt is necessary when going heavy with squats and deadlifts..

  • didnt watch the video after seeing who it was by. this guy has no idea what he's talking about whatsoever. please ignore

  • lol.. no back belts? im damn sure uv never pulled 3 times ur bodyweight.. theyre essential for heavy training.. and forearms? thats why u deadlift with an over-over grip as much as possible.. sure plenty of morons use belts in circumstances that are laughable but diss the morons not the belts.

  • I changed from isolation bodybuilding to explosive compound movements and plyometric training. I love deadlifts, bench presses, squats (box squats), hang cleans, clean n press, high pulls, cheat curls, one arm dumbbell snatches, etc. I dont use straps but man Icannot give up the back belt becuz I am so addicted to it.

  • Belts have helped raw lifters lift more since the dawn of time. I guess I shouldn't expect arms day mcgee to know that though

  • are you pro or something?? give us a break and gym your body as you like noob.. and when you speak look at the camera don't look the screen you pretty... NOOB

  • Do you even lift?

  • if people want to wear a belt, let them wear it... fucking hell, i really dont see what the problem is with a guy wearing a belt on a machine doing side raises, maybe he just finished back/leg exersices and couldn't be bothered to take it off. i've never worn a belt and i can guess using some common sense that it would add some support to your lower back making you move slightly slower therefore slightly decreasing the chance of causing some damage to your back

  • dude really think about it your posting all these blogs and thinking you actually sound smart, but really save yourself the embarrassment and fucking stop until you actually have something legible to build on your a tiny little boy talking shit when your just mad you cant build muscle...if you wana learn a few things get a good magazine like muscle development or muscle and fitness read on training get you an inzer belt their amazing and get a trainer

  • i can wear wat every the FUCK i want to wear

  • I've done that. squatted with a belt then moved on to other excercises but just forgot to take the belt off ..

  • any decent lifter will tell you is about creating more intra-abdominal pressure thus creating a more stable midsection & allowing heavier weights to be used. this isn't my real problem with this video. it's more the fact that you're debating this after talking about your ARMS day.

  • as far as i know they are used when trying to do about 90% and higher of max 1rm weight to prevent injury.

  • if you need to use a belt you have either caused injury to your back or are lifting weights that are too heavy for you and thus damaging your back. your core (abs, obliques etc.) is your belt and will get stronger through time. . . though admittedly there is nothing wrong with wearing a belt just to be on the safe side . . .

  • Back belts are to help keep your back strait. We all have preferences. I for one don't like squats I prefer leg press. They are similar and work the same muscles I just feel more comfortable on a leg press. In short, any exercise using your back has to be done properly or it could result in serious injury. It is defenantly good to were a back belt especially when reping large amounts of weight.

  • @scoutGOW they dont keep ur back straight...

  • @obezana Its purpose is to help support you back and helps with posture. Good posture entails a strait back... so weather you think they work or not that is what they are designed to help with.

  • @scoutGOW theyre not to help with "posture" ur supposed to do that on ur own. and if u arent keeping good posture, a belts not gna give it to u. ive seen plenty of morons who had horrible form while wearing a belt.. a belts purpose is giving the abdominals and core something to push against resulting in greater evenly distributed internal pressure without injury.. basically a belts biggest use in deadlifting is preventing a hernia.

  • >click video

    >guy looking at himself on camera while talking about shit. and i mean *SHIT*

    >takes halfway through video to start discussing the actual topic/title of video

    >doesn't provide any real evidence, says 1 guy's name i've never heard of and talk crap some guy using some bullshit machine

    >doesn't even lift.

    >131 dislikes to 18 likes

10/10 troll video bro. you got me.

  • @spankmofo >read comment from a guy who has nothing better to do than to post useless comments bringing someone down

10/10 troll comment bro. you got me.

  • I wear it when I do squats. It helps me from increasing my lumbar lordosis too much.

  • jimmy strutters

  • I dont wear belt, because i dont do excercises you need a belt for:)

  • So True, Fuck This Belts

  • If you use your belt the way Jim Wendler, Dave Tate and Louie Simmons tell you to, than the belt is just another effective tool a lifter can use to move big weight. But it does seem stupid to use them on machine side raises haha

  • Comment removed

  • You haven't told us why not to wear a belt, From what I know they help with stability on very high weight deadlifts and squats.

  • Can anyone say HERNIA?! not wearing a belt is life threatening

  • Comment removed

  • People have indjuries you dont know about, belts help.

yes some people use belts for no reason, but not all !

Right use of a belt will prevent injury durnig heavy lifting, yes you ar full og shit

  • I wear a belt it I feel my back is giving in when squatting. Usually because I did deadlifts the day before. It has its place in the gym. Nuff said.

  • hahahahha what an idiot u dont know shit about fitness man look at ure self u went to the gym like 3 times ?

  • I went to read the comments but they are to long

  • "jimmySTRUTHERStraining"

  • I've never heard anyone call a belt a "back belt." Your argument against the belt with McGrill's very abridged summary is hard to counter again, aside from the fact that the abdominals do not go to sleep once belt.

  • If your deadlifting 1000 lbs, and you feel your back might go, you need a belt.

  • This theory is supported in the work place where a belt is a reminder of good form. With all of the workplace distractions, lifting while twisting, answer phone, lift/twist again. But at the gym where you are giving the lift your full attention, a belt will rob your core by disabling it. We weren't born with shoes either but barefoot squats are another argument for another day.

  • Neither God nor Evolution gave us a back belt at birth so it's not needed. Our own adaptation prevents injury. If you can't lift the weight and keep your back strait then it's too much.

  • it's not because people are pussies retard. your back's discs are heavily stressed by rows, deadlifts, squats, etc. your fucking retarded for not believing a belt is EXTREMELY important to weight training. sure side raises you dont need a belt, or for most machines. seriously though your stupid

  • Im 15 i use a back belt because i play football and we squat every other day and i squat 3 plates and i only weigh 170 so thats why i wear a belt

  • @PochoReviews that's a good rep weight. im 123 and squat 205 i wish i were your weight haha

  • @nickwalther13als You dont have to wish just get a good weight gainer or you could even just buy whey protein and take 2 scoop a lot of people say its not magic but i have whey protein and i been using it for a month now and i gained 15 pound everyone can say what they want but for me i seen results with it i highly recommend it but you have to lift 4 days out of the week well thats what i do. And for your weight thats pretty good weight but how tall are you?

  • They wear backbelts to minimize the risk for injury and take some weight off the disks.

  • mebe he was just lazy and didnt want to take it off... why do you give a shit ither way its not like you should be paying attintion to other ppl when you should be working out anyways, mind your own bizzness :)

  • Lost all credibility when you said "Mac user" and "Just did arms"

  • No belt in training, but belt in max attempts.

  • JIMMYSTRUTHERTRAINING

  • a man who is skinny as shit giving advice on the gym, WOW

  • @negative55 size has nothing got to do with knowledge. i do think it better with the belt for safety but his just expressing his opinion.

  • as far as safety goes it seems everyone here has made the point on why belts are useful. but then theres also the bodybuilding side of why ppl where belts ALL the time not just on heavy lifts..some believe that the more unchecked pressure u put on ur abdomen like in deads, squats, etc will actually widen your waste which is true due to stablizing muscle.. so the belt will keep your waste tight and give a better shoulder to waste ratio.

  • jimmy struthers !!! from TMW lol

  • Weight belts are effective to increase intra abdominal pressure but are the most effective on 1 repetition maximum lifts. If you use them for submaximal lifts and where it for a length of a training session (like most wannabe bodybuilders do) then it will make your abdominal muscles weaker and reliant upon the belt. Just ask Powerlifters and Olympic lifters how useful a weightbelt is.

  • @captainjosue

Totally agree. As long as your form is good and you can support the weight for submaximal lifts a belt is counterproductive. I'm all about picking exercises for my routine that challenge multiple muscle groups at one time. If I wear a belt when I do my squats I deprive my core a great workout.

  • Yeah, olympic lifters don't know what they are doing... pfff... wearing belts... idiots. (sarcasm for those who don't understand)

  • @DavidSlagter

The vast majority of people at the gym are not training to be olympic lifters nor do they desire the body of one so why should they duplicate their training methods? Making sure you can do an exercise properly and loading the proper weight you can control is much more effective at keeping you safe than wearing a belt.

  • @conservakid85 I know, and i'm not saying you should always wear one. Hell, i've never even used one. But saying you should NEVER wear one is total bullshit. If you are becomming serious about lifting then a belt is a good thing on very heavy weights.

  • And if people have back problems you have to wear a belt. how is that an excuse?? its like wearing a brace on ur knee to run bcuz u have a bad knee. And yeah maybe poeple wear the belt when they are doing stupid exercises but you dont know why they are wearing it so just shut the fuck up

  • you use a fucking belt when you lift heavy weights so that you dont fucking tear your stomach muscles open you idiot...What a dip shit. you obviously know very little about lifting. and you need to keep training ur forearms. God knows ur skrawny ass will have to masturbate bcuz u cant get a girl. if u wore a belt maybe a girl would talk to you....or a guy if thats what tickles ur pickle. .

  • you wear a belt not just to protect ur back but also to prevent an hernia when ur lifting heavy. you should always wear one no matter wat lift your doing as long as ur using heavy weight

  • I just started wearing a back belt on most of my workouts. The mainly reason is because im working on my posture and want better form and it seems to help out.

  • this is the thing jimmy, when i go to the gym i don't look around to judge others, i do help people out if i see bad form, especially bad back form, so i know they won't hurt them selfs like alot of other people, you shouldn't be going around judging why people wear it or what they are doing next, when you go to the gym you do it for yourself not to judge, only help people if they are hurting them selves with bad form, or for a spot.

  • i think alot of people use back belts, for convenience, doing back, legs i even for some shoulder things, those belts can even help you with curls posture, leaving a nice arch in there back instead of estimating how much you arch or keep it straight, very good for alot of exercises. I would recommend it for even people lifting light weights, just gives you so much convenience to push your self past your boundaries.

  • I used to wear Belts earlier on hearsay. As I read more, I came to realize that when one is not squatting heavy weights, one is not required to wear belt. So now I haven't worn belt for years.

But a 4-inch Belt always kept giving me cues about my natural curve of my spine. I miss that especially during Squats and Deadlifts where I could sense that there is distortion in my form be it, Flexion or Hyperextension.

Just 2 days back saw a skinny guy wearing belt, doing sidetwist with PVC pipe.

  • anyways thax 4 vid

  • i wear a belt only when i workout for shoulders and back muscles ....

  • you ever think about looking at the camera instead of your monitor/screen?

  • @causbrite Have you ever shot videos from your computer?

  • @jimmysmithtraining Your arguement is invalid

  • @jimmysmithtraining

Kind of a non-argument. 90% of the Youtubers shoot videos from the computers and they just watch at the cam. So just accept you look silly, nothing to worry about really, and laugh at the guys joke. He didn't even mean any harm probably.

  • its creating abdominal pressure... its not a brace. it helps you lift. you look like youve never even been outside, or in a gym for that matter

  • I'd rather wear a backbelt than cut my shirt. Get on with your own workout, cunt

  • Back belts are for bros that want to look cool.

  • i only wear one when i try to break PR. only on bench, standing military, and deadlift.

  • I don't wear back belts and never will. If I can't lift a weight without a back belt, I am certainly not going to try with one on...

  • who the hell wants to waste their time on this asshole what the hell do you know u skinny wax head everyone need a belt for lowerback protection on deadlifts and squats i didnt even watch that video cuz its crap go slap so rogaine on your head and actually look like you can lift weights before you tell other people why they shouldnt wear belts ....

  • to say not to use a belt is such a opinionated statement. Mentioning one guys name does not support ur claims. Not saying your wrong but in the fitness industry and practically any area of life you will find opinions from one extreme to the other extreme, and those inbetween, whos right and whos wrong? Alot of weightlifters, bodybuilders, powerlifters and your average joe all use belts and to make such a argument against it is plain stupid. They have their place like everything else.

  • @DefyingGravity1893 Just because bodybuilders have used them since the 50's doesn't make it right. When you look at the science, which no one online seems to, you actually discover how bad back belts are

  • @DefyingGravity1893 I would have to agree with you. Belts have their place and since every person is different, not everyone really needs one.

  • According to lower back expert Stuart McGill, using a weightlifting belt is only really effective if you have had lower back troubles in the past while lifting. If your lower back is fine, you shouldn't use a weightlifting belt. McGill also cautions those with lower back pain who want to use a weightlifting belt, as the temporary pain relief can give you a false sense of security that can actually result in more serious injuries such as a hernia

  • @jimmysmithtraining I think there was one other study which said that some forms of back pain actually get worse with artificial core pressure created by Belt.

  • If I need the belt for one exercise I usually carry it on arround in all my other exercises, althought I wear it loose until needed. That way i don't have to carry more things in my hands ( In my Gym I must carry also a towel, a water bottle and my exercise program). . Aniway belts have such a great tendency to get lost.

  • My father himself said "You should wear back belt during workout" ._.

  • nothing builds abs like squats and deads without a belt

  • best forearm builder are bent over barbell rows if you don't use straps

  • Who the fuck would take this skinny pussy holes advice over thousands of pro's? GTFO dumb bitch my dick has more muscle than you. Don know what your fucking on about clueless slaphead

  • If u tweak ur back doesnt matter how many years pass by ull still be tweaked

  • Ronnie Coleman, who is one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time, wears his belt the whole time he works out, yes the whole time, that even means when he's doing lateral shoulder raises. Joe Weider told him to do this. And I would like to think that Coleman and Weider know just a tad more then you do about fitness.

  • @Ravens46D Are you serious? Wow you have no idea what your talking about. Keep believing the same nonsense that has been around since the 70's.

  • @jimmysmithtraining you really are a short minded person,Ravens46D might not know what he is talking about but 6 times mister olympia sure to hell knows what he is doing and if he is wearing a back belt the whole workout then it might not be such a bad choice.

  • @Ravens46D Yes he did....And that was back in the early 90s...

  • @Ravens46D No he doesn't, i dont agree about not using a belt but your information is far off kid.

  • as ronnie coleman has said, he used to wear a weight belt all throughout his workout to try and tighten his waist and achieve an X-frame

  • All of you are idiots... You should never wear belts and always lift with back.. I try to dead lift 500 pounds with my back, I usually hear a pop but it's the muscle screaming them want more... Thats when I try lifting my moms Toyota Cruise at least 1 time

  • Guy's like you should never wear a belt .......

  • 2:35 to go the actual topic...

  • REAL weightlifters wear belts because they know that it prevents injuries such as hernias when lifting max weight.

  • Comment removed

  • even olympic weightlifters use belts, and the fact that you think a belt cant prevent hernia's is just retarded, not only that but you look like you havent worked out a day in your life lol what do you max on bench press like 155 lmfao, no one in there right mind would take advice from you

  • if u work out like a bitch then yea dont ever wear a belt. but if your serious about it then you have no choice. for dead lifts , back rows, and squats. so stfu and workout like a man

  • pussy

  • This guys an idiot

  • I don't like the belt. I'm training to get strong why would I use a piece of leather to do the work for me? screw that.

  • youre so ignorant it makes me want to beat the ever living shit out of you.

I highly doubt you can squat or deadlift double your bodyweight without fucking your back up. oh and another thing RONNIE COLEMAN wears a belt the whole time hes at the gym, id rather listen listen to him then a faggot like you with a shitty body

  • so u dont get a hernia dumbass

  • your body is trash, you are as weak as a 15year old

    do you even llift?

  • @xClutch93 hey man! im 15, dont diss! im bigger than this guy:P

  • Studies show that wearing a belt while lifting weights increases intraabdominal pressure by up to 40% and reduces compression of the intervertebral discs by 50%, which suggests that lifting belts can help prevent weight-training injuries (particularly back injuries) and aid muscle strength.

  • @fuller292 Read some Stuart McGill. The foremost expert on low back health.

  • @fuller292 Stuart McGill pretty much disagrees. In his piece, "On The Use of Weight Belts," he says, " Those who have never had a previous back injury appear to have no additional protective benefit from wearing a belt."

  • ok fine you nerd dont wear them and do heavy weights ..

and see what happens to your naval and body posture...

and in old age your knees will crack................

  • Is there any chance you could redo this video? I couldn't understand anything until halfway through when I heard "Why do dudes wear back belts in the gym?" then rushed talking again.

  • u r stupid.

  • stop bitching.get some muscles.you weakling

  • strong no traps bro

  • Comment removed

  • OK, my first comment is to calm down! You seem very over excited. Second, I agree that one should not wear a weight belt for EVERYTHING they do. But I do recommend using it for the heavy sets. i.e. dead lifts, lighter weights should be done w/o a belt, but the heavy sets should use it. As for people who have had lower back injury, they should wear it for the extra support it provides.

  • i wear belts when doing very heavy squating and deadlifts to help keep good form

  • i don't wear belt cuz i cann't afford it. or else i would use belt

  • Its a weightlifting belt. Its meant to support the transversus abdominis and internal obliques during heavy maximal effort, axial loading stuff (1 rep max). That's why strongmen and powerlifters wear them. Its bad for sports athletes because it creates faulty motor engrams which will then not stabilize the core during impact. If your wearing it for your back you are wrong.

  • Watch lee haywards video on "what is the best weight lifting belt?". It's more about why and how to use one than it is promoting a certain brand.

I use one but only when I max because I'm a football player, wrestler, and shot/disc/jav thrower so I have to have a strong core too.

  • i only use a belt on squats and deadlifts when im doin more than double my body weight

  • belts have there place and for powerlifting there essential for reinforcing form and ensuring core support...if you dont train heavy there is no need

  • so when u go to try to max out your deadlift weight or your squat weights and you fuck a disc up in your back because your back wasn't stabilized your gonna feel like a huge douche cause i don't know any strongman competers, bodybuilders, or even a fucking fitness model that wouldn't weak a belt using alot of weight i do agree tho using a belt for an easy workout is pointless but there is a huge need of a belt if your gonna lift heavy.

  • I couldnt disagree more, Id rather walk about the house wearing my belt than not wear it when training my back and doing squats. Doing heavy squats or deadlifts without back support is just asking for trouble and i know from experience of deadlifting one day trying to be clever and saying i dont need a belt, well i pulled my back and couldnt bend it for days without lots of pain and now just from that 1 incident if i dont wear a belt i cant squat or deadlift without the same thing happening

  • you should have made your point about why the back belt is not good more clear

  • wt.....

  • i dont understand your point

  • The belt is NOT for your back. The belt is used to create intra abdominal pressure. I use a belt but ONLY for extremely heavy singles, doubles, or triples of squats, deadlifts, and over head press. THe intra abdominal pressure created by the belt allows you to lift heavily and lift more than you normally could(by a small amount). YOu should never use a belt for normal sets though. YOur belt should also be 4inch tall all the way around or it's useless!

  • Comment removed

  • @neomage2021 You have put belt in a completely wrong way. Belt does not create pressure. Belt helps in maintaining pressure when you breathe and expand your belly into the belt.

I think I'll listen to Louie Simmons, Dave Tate (and thereby Jimmy) who recommend strengthening Core & Posterior by not using the 'training aid' called Belt in workouts.

  • Comment removed

  • Only people with big ass holes get hernias

  • I thot back braces were used to keep yur stomach sucked in so u won't have one of those stomics wit one big ab!

  • machine side raises? never heard of such a thing!

  • wtf?, it´s more possible to get an hernia with gym belt than without it?
