Beautiful. One of my favorite videos on YouTube. Thank God you were there to capture this and share a sublime moment. These two are such great artists. Love them and love everything about this. Thanks for uploading it.
A beautiful song, rendered by a truly gifted duo, full of insight and compassion, cerebrating the underdog in the great American tradition of dear olWoddy Guthrie, and Jonny Cash, rest their souls, the sound quality was poor, but thats not a problem, as I will buy the cd, thanks kimbafly for this video
Just got into her music recently, love it and her, her accent is great, i suppose you would call it a southern" Drawl " and those teeth, best i ever saw, how much were they?
This is the best music footage on you tube I've seen so far. The black and white really clarifies the musicians, and also puts the shadowy figures into a very artful portrait that mirrors the content of the song exactly. I've never commented before on you tube -- this time I had to. Thanks!!
I recently became a fan of Gillian Welch (only because I'm ignorant and wasn't exposed to her music before now) so I've been watching everything I can of hers. This video is great, but the crowd just pisses me off! I heard a couple of derogatory comments. Oh well, I guess it's part of the live music experience, eh? Anyway, it's a great song and I'm glad I got to hear it. Thanks to the OP! :-)
Oh man, I am so glad I came across this...I was there and remember it well! It was so cold, but such a great festival, great day, and a great early performance. I remember seeing their afternoon show, and went up to the stage afterward to get them to sign my copy of Revival. That would make this footage from Oct. of 1996, as Revival was released in the spring of that year.
Thanks so much for posting this, brings back such great memories!
This is the most beautiful video I have seen on You Tube. It captures so much. First of all some beautiful music, total empathy with the performers and their slight irritation when the crowd gets noisy and an amazing sense of atmosphere. Really well shot too!
I agree -- this is great footage -- i love the silhouettes of people dancing, the shouts, the shakiness. you did a great job. Well, and of course the source material is incredible.
Why Do Some People Who Go To See & Hear Music, Find It Necessary Too Make More Noise Than The Performers ? & Spoil It For The Rest.Gillian & David a world class act
Wow. To have been there. I had the privilege of seeing them play at a small venue in Seattle the day before Hell Among the Yearlings was released. Amazing show. I'm a big fan of their early work. Really nice people, too.
This is excellent, and don't apologize for the crowd noise . . . you can hear the music just fine and the crowd noise actually adds something raw and genuine without drowning out the main attraction.
wow. thanks for the compliments. i didn't know when i was filming this back then that it would please so many people :) they are great folks and i appreciate that everyone appreciates their talents.
I remember hearing them duo for the first time in 1995. I was half-listening in a sleep-daze on a hot summer day to NPR and this song came on. I was so moved, I wrote a fan letter right then (got a letter back, typed with an old typewriter!), and became a groupie for a few months.
A historic document. Gorgeous black and white! The shadow outlines of the dancers against the light backdrop, along with the incongruity of the amazing performance with the obnoxious crowd, all gave me goose bumps. Well done.
frankly I don't know why you feel any need to apologize for anything. What you've presented here is truly THE MOST CLASSIC, THE MOST WONDERFULLY FILMED, EARLIEST FOOTAGE of this great duo ever found to date, at least that I've seen. The closeups, the dancers, as well as the black & white format all add icing on the cake. Prescious. Thanks muchly.

Beautiful video. I agree that somehow the noise of the crowd and the dark silouettes create the perfect backdrop for this song. Thanks for posting.

You know she's actually from California, and she fakes the accent when she sings. She's still great, though, as is Dave Rawlings

I don't know where she is from, but they really talk like that in many parts of California because they're okies or arkies or children of 'em

Hey now check out Mahalia Jackson's 'In the upper room.'
Sweet Mahalia sings like no other...a great revival.

the hours logged by musicians in such the 'bar room environment ' makes all the difference in the quality.
Maybe more commercial but not less then is our beloved Bonnie Raitt, the queen of the Bar Room Girls......

A classic example of where seeming limitations--crowd noise, cold, sillouhettes--become amazing strengths.
