@nikanj As you know the South were anti-Communist, while the North was pro-Communist. The U.S supported the South. The U.S was put into war by the Gulf of Tonkin Incident were the USS Maddox, on an intelligence mission along North Vietnam's coast, allegedly fired upon and damaged several torpedo boats that had been stalking it in the Gulf of Tonkin. Another attack was reported a few days later.
On March 8, 1965, 3,500 U.S Marines were deployed to South Vietnam.

@nikanj So the U.S military engaged the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) and VC (South Vietnamese Communist Insurgents). On January 1968, the communist Vietnamese (NVA & VC) launched the Tet Offensive by attacking 100 SV cities. The U.S and ARVN (South Vietnamese Army) beat the Communists. But it was a propaganda victory for the communists. On 10 May 1968, despite low expectations, peace talks began between the United States and North Vietnam. Nixon beat Humphrey in 1968 election.

However, it was the bomber that could smash the USSR's pigsty of T-54/55s. ;) Now, as for the Vietnam war, they were not used correctly due to Liberal morons like LBJ. If the military was allowed to bomb how Nixon did it, they would've won the war within minutes. Also, remember this. The NVA was crushed - Vietcong wasn't. Also ,we never "LOST" Vietnam truly. We forced them, through Linebacker, to a ceasefire. North Vietnam caught us after Nix.

@miliket4tom Yes, I agree the B52s suffered heavy losses in those last bomb attacks on Hanoi, however, over schweinfurt Germany the 8th AF lost 60 bombers in one raid. The best Hanoi could do was 15 in several concentrated days? Then the skies were pretty much clear, all the SA2s had been exhausted. Not to mention, after the Christmas truce on 25Dec 1972, at one minute past midnite 103 bombers intersected over Hanoi and woke up the whole town..."Christmas truce Over!!" Hanoi was breached!!

@miliket4tom The trouble my friend, the B 52s bomb from many miles up and many intersecting streams, we had no intention of hitting a hospital, but we could not prevent it. This was before smart bomb technology for the B52. Today, we could put all 103 B52 bomb loads x 72 1K's through the General Giap's window and miss the lacy curtains. As far as why we signed the Peace Accords, we were tired of the war and the North Vietnamese proved to be more honorable than the S. Vietnamese Govt.

@miliket4tom Since the War i have met and actually befriended many Vietnamese and Cambodians, I have found they are the most peaceful people on the earth. I wish now we had never warred in SE Asia... I feel alas, we were rattling the capitalist sword at the face of the Russian Communist bear, and as is normal for Soviet Aggression, they never suffered but the Vietnamese did. I wish you peace...believe me.... I wish you peace. We had great weapons and resolve, we were wrong.

Because it was not concluded properly that is an insult to botht he People of the United States and the People of Viet Nam. War on a good day is torture. We, my friend were tortured for seven years. Also, I understand the Vietnamese struggled since the times of the french colonialists, much longer..

If it's such a great weappon why don't they build new ones using the same design with a few changes to update some details.
In the long run it might even be cheaper and safer then trying to keep planes in the air who's structure can fail because of metal fatigue.

First before the B 52 got close enough those sam rockets would have already been destroyed.
Second because the B 52 fly very high and because they can launch rockets from a great distance
there's no way a sam can get even close.
However the combination of surface to air missiles with any airpower would be a deadly combination that a B 52 would be helpless to avoid.
