@jamesdrummerman Yeah, and I know which song you're talking about too. That groove where the hi-Hat opens every third sixteenth note. Carey is a beast! Thanks for your input :)
Great Video - You provided great and useful examples, explained it well and make great use of visuals. This is how I started to understanding many types of polyrhythms, metric modulations. Learning to read music and notation is something all drummer should take time to learn. Great Job.
Thank you @mletalien, I kind of cringe when listening back to this video now though. I have to admit that my voice is kind of irritating. I like to think that my videos have got a little bit better since though...hopefully! :D
Thanks for ignoring my irritating voice @Str8Faced and just focusing on the content. This video makes me cringe like an embarrassed parent at a teacher/parent evening unfortunately :/
Nice lesson mate, subscribed too. I learned recently just learned that drum part from Eulogy by tool where Danny does something similar to this. 16 notes on the hi-hat and opening every 3rd beat. Its a nice little groove to have.
heya I have a question, very cool stuff btw, gonna try learn some of thse. But is there a reason you play the bass with your left foot on the double pedal on these beats? Or just doing it for a change ? xD
its more just something you should randomly be doing when your practice, if you have double bass pedals. just like you should be playing open-handed sometimes during practice. It also adds a bit of basic showmanship to switch between closed and opened handed during a beat, but you need it for other things to.
Ha it's so weird how you use your left to play the kick, great drumming nonetheless

Nice informative video, but Danny Carey usually uses the pedal for his hats during polyrhythms, making them much harder in my opinion.

another nice ostinato is when you play the bass drum in 3/16, going like
oo-oo-oo-oo- (16th notes) , and play a quarter note rock beat over that

This is very cool! Correct me if I'm wrong, this is an ostinato, a 3/16 polymeter and a 4:3 polyrhythm all at the same time.
