As difficult as it is for a S to make the probowl, he's made four, and he has a superbowl ring. If you look at his defensive statistics, he has a hall of fame resume. This isn't even close to being a late hit or illegal. Watch the ball. It is still 8 feet in the air when Milloy hits him. + LJ Smith changed directions 180 degrees to try to catch the deflected ball. The whistle cannot blow until the ball hits the ground incomplete. It was a bad call and shouldn't have been a penalty. A safety has to take out the receiver on a deflected ball, or the receiver may catch the ball. You would think the announcer would have pointed that out, too.

He didn't touch the ball, but it hit Brooking's helmet, which is a deflection, meaning it is a live ball til it hits the ground. Smith clearly turns to catch the deflection, by turning his whole body to look over his other shoulder for the ball, which is when he turns right into the Milloy hit. Milloy doesn't have to go for the ball, he can light up the receiver because the ball had been hit and was still in the air. Which is why he did not get fined by the league.

But, had you seen it in real time you would have realized that the play happened much to fast for that. You just don't seem to know much about football. Milloy doesn't have to make a play on the ball. He's coming 100 mph thinking Smith is going to catch the ball, which he would have if it hadn't hit the LB's helmet. Until the ball hits the ground after a deflection, the receiver is fair game. That's why they always waive off pass interference on a deflected pass. The only reason Smith got hit head-on is because he turned his torso to look for the deflection, and turned right into Milloy's hit.

Pretty Cheap. Milloy didnt play the ball at all. If he did he probably couldve gotten the pick. He went for the big hit on a defenseless WR thus the penalty and inveitable fine (possibly suspension). He was well than 5 yards away when the ball deflected off of the helmet. Plenty of time to adjust and go for the ball instead of LJs head with his shoulder. Took 3 full steps.
