I don't think any cover will ever remotely match the original, Missy Higgins was just incredible in that song.

However, you can start by compressing the dynamics a little. I mean, it looks cool when you go from calm-and-soft to aggressive-and-loud, but it just doesn't sound good. It was suppose to be a cover, not a remix, right? Yeah...

However, I don't blame you, the mic and the untreated room doesn't help either. But you can get programs and cheap acoustic panels to help with that.
