What, SNES and N64 don't have vga output!!! You would have to double the horizontal lines of the s video output, then convert to VGA, then you could use the SLG. How would you do that?
Definitely a cool product, but to be *truly* accurate shouldn't the scanlines blend together when something pans vertically? This is how it works on every CRT I've seen (not to be a stickler or anything). :)
My girlfriend gave me heck for wanting to keep my tube television from Philips. I explained to her that the new HDTVs woudn't translate old systems like the NES, SNES and even the PS2, as well as a tube TV. Once I got it all hooked up, she was convinced to keep the old TV. My only fear is that tube televisions do have an uncertain lifespan.. Ive had mine for nearly 10 years now. I hope I can get another 5 - 6 years before I settled for a converter. Good video brother. :]
@Narcomics I'm planing on getting a Sony Wega with DVI and use it as a big monitor for Color reasons and use it with conjunction of the slg3000, but for now, I ordered a Scan Converter (that also has an scart output) to use my CRT TV with S-Video as a big ass 27 inch monitor so I can at least emulate on it.
I also like CRTs because I'm cheap with technology and late at adopting things and I'll eventually replace the wega with the best plasma when OLED is perfected. (It will be cheap by then)
@tive2 well I guess it does make the image on an LCD look a lot better with low res games...but as I might have mentioned, a CRT is the best and easiest solution. If I can, I will always play retro stuff on CRT except when I need hi def capture to make a video.
@futurematt5 Well this makes it look like it used to look like on a CRT Screen, but particulary in this video, there are ugly artifacts related to the scaling. Look at 2:22 to 2:29. The score numbers (+360, +370 and such) are distorted and change their height sometimes. I don't know if these artifacts are caused by software of hardware.
This isn't serious if you can solve it by choosing a proper resolution and scaling factor, is it?
Fantastic! I'm looking a getting a custom MAME cab made (through Col ex Megaware) and he builds them with LCD monitors- with these added it would give it that retro feel! :)
Hope you're impressed with it dude! :-D You wait until you hook up your other retro consoles via the scaler. ;-)
The benefit of using this with a 480i signal is that it will get rid of any flicker. So you will lose effective resolution (as you are only displaying half the lines - i.e. 240), but the image will be cleaner.
In 480p mode (as you have it set-up) flipping between Sw4 and Sw5 you can change the scanlines from odd to even. :-)
@Faginrs500 I enjoyed messing around with the switches, and am gonna hook it up later with the scaler. However I'd still like to get some 240p patches for running Mushi and Ibara on the CRT!
That would be a must buy for me if I played games on the original kit. But im only into emulation still i really should take the time to find some decent soft scanline settings for my emulators (something like that soft setting you showed with the tated Gunbird 2)
@TrevHead10 Yeah I always like messing around with scanline seetings, Kawaks has got great scanline support for Neo Geo and CPS1/2 though not in full screen mode annoyingly (unless I haven't been using it correctly!)
That looks mint.. So you basically HAVE to have a VGA image going through the thing? That'll be OK for the Dreamcast stuff but I'll have to get a converter for the rest of it! I hope they guy is still making them.. :S

gorgeous.

i don't get one thing. Since this device recreates the classic CRT look, shouldn't the screen do the typical tubular jittering?

@tive2 It reminds people of the OOOld arcades where the games mostly had scanlines.

Would this work with a Genesis/SNES/NES etc using a simple (yellow) Composite female to VGA adapter into this device ?
So like this ... (composite-F) 0)))))-----((((E (VGA-m) to (VGA) E))))-(((((E

@ianwilson1978 MAME can do this natively using "effects" which overlays a mask that makes scanlines, there are several to choose from.

@TG626 Yeah I've been told that but it doesn't look as good as this apparently.

Awesome video, I'm definitely considering buying one of these now. Great taste in shmups, too!

@futurematt5 Yeah, I would love a good CRT but I don't have the space for one.

Also make sure you change the aspect ratio to 4:3 on a widescreen TV. If you don't everything will be stretched and the wrong proportion!
Faginrs500 1 year ago
@Faginrs500 me - use the incorrect aspect ratio?!!
