  • What a fucking voice..... every word.... believable.

  • amazing, have no words

  • Amazing... have no words

  • Just like Johnny's version you can actually feel the hurt. Beautiful.

  • very good cover of this song. It aches almost as much as Mr. Cash.

  • ah, the original at last, so much better than NIN and neck a neck with Cash

  • @sagizanne Well, not the original, but Cash and Peter are so powerful and incredible performers. They both put so much heart into it, both never cease to amaze me

  • what is the relationship between peter and paul... :o

  • Any version of Peter singing this song is great, but this isn't the best recording. I heard him do it live back in November. I and several people around me were crying. He's one of the best singers I've ever had the pleasure of seeing live.

  • always being other, bored and pooor,.But funny,Narcissismus mirrored skeletons like him,

  • His voice makes me come! :o)

  • perfect...

  • "...oh my God, Peter simply never ceases to enthrall and mesmerize and plunge full through, to crow and howl each piercing, palpitant, grinding truth from depths obscene, see, we cringe and fall and flail between each, these, our tremulous, uneasy breaths, thrust forth as if to shock apart, divide, to rend and skew the...

  • ...lines where many dare not tread to read, we'll scrape and peel away each wince from every thinning, withered fence which could no longer keep us safe, oh God, we had no right to excavate, for relics such as these are the sort that drive men mad, like whispers burrowing in heat beyond our shadowed sight to pray we pass in silence...♥ ~ me, for my Beloved Peter ♥

  • I've been a fan of Peter Murphy since the eighties and still am however this IMO is weak. Over done and cheap sounding. Just listen to him @ 2:34 sad really really sad.

  • He's intense. Sounds a bit like Bowie here.

  • Great... poetic brilliance.

  • Ew, it sounds like the Johnny Cash version. That version is awful.

Though granted, this is much better than anything Johnny Cash could sing.

  • I love peter's version especially live... he puts so much power into the song that emotions just overflow... "its peters song now"

  • I don't care how much older he is than me. He's... sexy.

Best voice.... just... the best male voice that exists... <3 <3

    deep, and poetic...

    all around amazing man.

  • @xXAuthorAngelXx totally agreed

  • @xXAuthorAngelXx I totally agree with you!!

  • Nothim compares to trent

  • Oh Peter!

  • sorry, this is johnny cash's song. i don't care if it was trent's originally, or even if the gothfather decided to cover it...... the man in black OWNS this song.

  • @jellokatt No, Johnny sings the Hurt like a man completely defeated--with him, there is no hope, for he has given up--resigned.

Trent sings the Hurt with defiance--he knows that he is down, but he has not given up hope and he is going to fight like hell to get back on his feat.

I choose Trent's version because at least if he does go down, he's going to go down fighting.

  • @mrsolofeo i never really saw it like that, but i still have to choose johnny's version. there are some really good songs out there that actually speak to me, that fit what you say trent's version is trying to convey (i know a lot of people on here probably won't share my tastes, but rise against and odetta spring to mind). trent is fun to listen and dance to, but he just doesn't move me the way many other artists do... and johnny's version of this song moves me - it is pure, raw emotion.

  • @jellokatt I would agree--they play Johnny's Hurt on the alt station where I live, and his version truly is moving. But he just sounds so defeated when he sings it--but I guess that Johnny just sang it the way he felt, and I think that toward the end of his life he was feeling a lot of hurt because of everything he'd been through.

  • @mrsolofeo but i still respect your opinion, and can understand why you would feel that way.

  • @jellokatt No one can deny the greatness of Johnny Cash--but it just seems to me that in the end--he gave up.

And when you give up--you're defeated.

    When I'm down--I commiserate with Morrissey;

And when I feel better, I listen to Trent because his defiance re-energizes me.

  • Uh no. The person who went through the work of writing the lyrics IS the owner of the song. Have a little more respect for the original artist. Just because Johnny Cash covered it and died doesn't mean he should get the credit for someone else's hard work and emotion. Sorry.

  • @ERiNxtc420 but Trent Reznor himself said, after hearing Cashs version, that this is the sound, this song should have been... so Trent "gave" this song to Cash... nice compliment!

  • @wurzelschlump666 Leonard Cohen did the same thing whit "Hallelujah" when he heard Jeff Buckley's version.

  • @brimstonejack really? that's cool, but i must admit that i like the sound of Leonards voice a lot more than the voice of Jeff. I'm sorry :-)

  • @wurzelschlump666 but then peter stole it :P

  • ya trent does this better but i love peter forever :)

  • Johnny Cash Does it best

  • hum.........a mi me late bastante Peter Murphy, pero este tema se escucha mejor con Jony Cash

  • @takashi20 y a mi con trent reznor... incluso con reznor y bowie cantando a dueto

  • Now that just HURT to listen too... Damn Peter - I can see how this song fits in your life - but I dunno - it sounded more than desperate - as if he was straining to get it all out... I've always loved Mr. Murphy - but between this cover and the new 2011 album - may be time to hang up the microphone... But - who do you become when you are no longer 'Peter Murphy'? Hmmm...

  • @LaurafWSC I respectfully disagree.

  • @LaurafWSC so...he strained to get it out...guess it wasnt easy for him. He never took the easy road ..thank god. you need to go back to rock n roll high school dearie

  • thrilling

  • Thank you for posting this.It has special meaning for me and I was glad to be able to share it with someone I love dearly today and this made it possible...

  • Wish they had this on iTunes!!! =( Anyone know how I can get this for my iPod??

  • I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real.. [can't wait for Peter Murphy in SF next month!] btw this is better than Johnny Cash!

  • my god !.......yeah this sounds like a god !

  • yea this is good, but Trent Rezner does it awesome as well,, only with a little more angry emotion..

  • @wanaply9 Murphy and Reznor do a good job, but Johnny Cash's version is best. His emotion is real as he reflected on the death of his wife June

  • @pixnstix his wife?,please.... he was not there for his kids! He said he was protecting them from a drugged out dad, but sounds like a cop-out to me. You're kids should be everything to you and especially not avoided, excuses=disrespect.

  • @pixnstix Reznor made the song! Without Reznor there wouldn't be any covers, and Trent was talking about a period in his life when he was surviving drugs... that might hurt I think..The original is the only one that really reflects real pain.. But I'm always defending the original author when it comes "cover discussions" :)

  • it`s sincere...that`s what modern songwriters and singers lost totally.he knows how to express the pain, the intensity of this idiotic life which is hurt, and nothing but hurt...

  • Kermit did it better -

  • That man is sooo hot!

  • the most amazing face I've ever known.

  • I grew up listing to Bauhaus and Peter Murphy.

  • How can nin be terrible at Hurt? Its trents song in the first place

  • @hlokaty So? Bob Dylan has written whole albums worth of good songs.. but every single cover is better than the original.

  • @azynkron I see your point. A lot of covers can be better than originals. I suppose Im just such a nin fan I'll always lean toward his version thats all

  • @hlokaty whoever needs to sing a particular song and nail it -has little to do with who wrote it. No matter how far back in time you go remakes have trumped original versions.

  • Sorry, but this interpretation is all over the place, ... trying a bit to hard?

  • Camera loves this guy. I can watch and listen to him forever....

  • Me encanta ..fantastic ...excelent...muy bueno ....que inteligencia ,se nota la expresion es unica .

  • My Favorite Vocalist in the world!!

  • hes my FAVOURITE singer of all times ,but he sounds exaggerated..

his voice doesn't suit the sentiment of the song...he sings LIKE he's joking, he's trying too hard.. 3.21 to 3.41 mins, screams like Br Springsteen ,like!

  • @melodieDeLaVie You're absolutely right. I've noticed Murphy's singing style has become increasingly exaggerated over the years. On his "Dust" LP, (2002) which I consider one of his best, there is a version of "My last two weeks" which despite the brilliance of his musicians, he almost destroys because his singing is so unnecessarily over the top. And yes, again you're right; it does sound like he's joking. This is a voice he used to use in Bauhaus, when he WAS joking!

  • Excellent

  • By far the best version of this track. So sad and desperate. And great job on the video. Some beautiful, classic footage of Bauhaus.

  • beautiful!

    <3

  • Wow.. I hate this song, but this version I had to listen to twice...

  • @ocaladiver how do you hate this song?....Nine inch nails is terrible at it but listen to johnny cash's version it's better i think, but still i like peters music.... thanks for doing what you do :)

  • wow... his voice is so deep, and has so much feeling...

    superb.

  • Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy Murphy one more time.... Murphy

  • P E R F E C T.....................

  • I do respect Murphy's for covering this song and i did think it was good, but I still like to hear NIN as Trent Reznor's it's voice father, not the Goth father being NIN's song rebirth to die in a substance of numbing nothing ,i watched Murphy alive and he is awesome not discrediting him, just expressing my point of listening the interpretation, and as i don't care about any comment i hope none get offended and offensive and stupidly tries to reply me with arrogant words

  • gettin everytime wet eyes...true beauty

  • outstanding!

  • oooh I love Peter Murphy! Good vid

  • Einfach nur GENIAL!

  • It defies description. I touches something real inside. It revives a mourning of the loss of innocence. The vocals cut through the mind numbing drone of life and reminds one to live and not just go through the motion.

You can have it all - my empire of dust.

  • wow, beautiful

  • Hi Eva, it's still your video. Nothing had changed!!!!

Your credit is still there.... always was and it will remain as is!!!!!!!

  • Hey! It's my video!!!!
