England is such a beautiful country. I've been to most of her counties but I've never been to Melton Mowbray. English architecture is so quaint compared to ours in Scotland. I'm never satisfied till I have my twice yearly fixes of Hampshire & Devon and the lovely towns I pass through getting to them. But I must get over to MM soon. I've been fortunate enough to enjoy your pies so hopefully I'll soon enjoy the place!
I heard the roads around melton mowbray are very dangerous, there have been many cases of car accidents, both fatal and not, around here. One of my closest friends is from melton mowbray. she was in a car crash around melton too. Lovely town though.
i came across this video clip looking for info or pictures of " the elms "
someone sold a picture/postcard of it on ebay.
i have never heard of it before . the reason i am interested in it , is because we have an elms here in newport R.I. , ( i have been there a few times ) they appeared to look similiar .
The manager of the Regent Cinema found some v. early footage of Melton in his basement. But I think it was pre-WW2 - maybe the 1930s. He donated it to some organisation based in Nottingham that stores early video. I tried to put some of it on a DVD, but they wanted thousands of pounds. So it just sits there gathering dust. Which is a great pity. And not what the cinema owner intended :o(
If you can get some old and new photos, I'd be more than happy to help you create a video. Likewise with anyone else who'd be interested in doing one for their home town/village.
Melton looked so much cleaner and quieter then. No garish shop fronts, no lorries and cars thundering down the streets. I can't see us ever recapturing that pace of life. More's the pity!
For anyone who enjoys this clip, I've just posted a second one in widescreen format with the option to view in high quality. Click on the 'More from dstirl' link to see this new clip.
Thanks for the comment. It does look far nicer in those days. It just shows what a difference all the traffic makes today. The modern photos were taken early on a sunny Sunday morning - which was the only time I could stand in the middle of the road and just about avoid getting run over!
Thanks. There are lots more of these 'then and nows' on the Remember Melton website. I'm hoping to create a few more YouTube clips from them when I get a chance.

@dstirl I find it somewhat sad and heart warming at the same time. One day pictures of Melton TODAY will seem as distant as the ones from OUR past.
Can't hold onto it for ever but at least treasure it while it stands.
