  • I remember drinking to this song, back in 68, in high school. Kids loved this song, to dance.

  • Alex sure can sing mighty fine, but his "dancing" is a form of torture to watch. I mean, wtf?

  • @KellyGreen5555 who cares about his dancing? he's gorgeous!

  • @poobabear His voice is great but physically he reminds me of Eddie Money!! lol

  • Alex lives on via you tube........... thanks

  • Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Eddie Money.

  • Jesus, he reminds here of Eddie Money, facially, with his crooked mouth; and vocally, with his rasp and slight speech impediment ......

  • Alex Chilton was 17 here--amazing.

  • LIP SYNC. JOB. NO BANJO - GUITAR HERE !

  • Great!!

  • They had soul, i thought they were black, until last year.

  • Thanks for the video...great group!

  • Thanks for sharing!!...I love Box Tops

  • Alex you were great.

  • I'm just 14 years old, and I think it's such a shame that young people like me listen to lady gaga and beyonce whereas this kind of music is just... brilliant, awesome... the 60's and all... Now there is just commercial music and teenagers listen this kind of shit !

  • yes you are right his wearing his pants the wrong way round,,,now thats funny,,,,,the reason his not confortable ,because his miming to his record,,,thay always did that on tv,,,

  • very very funny comments,,,, ( is he wearing his trousers the wrong way round,,,hahahhahahhahhahahhahahahahha!!!!!! funnyyyyyyyyyyyy,,,,the reason the electric guitar is not pluged in is because most of the bands play to there records ,,,,some times the singer will sing ,but the band pretend to play,,,,well ,,only on tv or pop programs on tv,,,,when i was on tv with my band we complain about this but did not help,,,thay where the bosses,we work for them

  • Nice tie. Eddie Money got nuthin on you.

  • Alex Chilton, the lead vocalist for The Box Tops, was taken to the hospital in New Orleans on March 17, 2010, complaining of health problems, and died the same day of a suspected heart attack.

  • The frontman of the Box Tops (Alex Chilton) had a great sounding voice. It's kind of a wonder the group didn't last long.

  • He look's unconfortable.

  • How do you play an electric guitar without electricity? I'm confused!!

  • Is it just me or does the lead singer look like John Fogerty (lead singer of Creedence Clearwater Revival)? Cool song!

  • Is he wearing his trousers the wrong way round ?

  • My father was a DJ for KILT in Houston back in the days of Top Ten Radio. This music, and others of its genre defined my appreciation for the oldies. Dear music, please get back to where you once belonged. This is what I love most about youtube!

  • Love it, great song too.

  • This was their follow up song to The Letter. Just as good, in my opinion. I was 16 at the time and was very into all the music of the day. The intro sounds as good today as it did in 1967... that guitar riff just melts me.

  • @cliftongal51 Sorry, but it was "Neon Rainbow" that was the follower up to "The Letter". Then came "Cry Like a Baby".

  • @SixtiesPopGold ....true...it was neon rainbow...then cry like a baby...was i met her in church or choo choo train the follow up to cry like a baby? i was in 7th grade in '68, so i forget but remember both of those songs too....and soul deep and sweet cream ladies....guess that was about it for the box tops' top 40, huh?

  • @cliftongal51 AMEN I was 17 loved both tunes gr8 stuff Alex was one cool dude

  • Oh man- so good.

  • i watched clay cole on wpix channel eleven new york! yes!

  • i have the feeling that he cries like a baby..

  • @elixir252 What I was thinking

  • 0:34 the funniest bassist i have ever seen :)

great band great song The Boxtops forever :)

  • Kinda sounds like Joe Cocker, though Alex is an original and I hope that I get to see him sing someday.

  • @LastTree Alex Chilton is gone ,sadly. A great voice,RIP.

  • @twain103 Oh, too bad ;(

  • @elixir252 I was just thinking the same thing before I scrolled down to your comment. Looks and sounds a lot like Eddie Money.

  • A great song thats on my ipod and played in my home every weekend , great bass line. Thanks for posting.

  • good music goodtimes seem like a distant memory i guess they are

  • Alex Chilton is just so awesome.... what a remarkable artist throughout his life.

  • Fans boo'd him off stage!!!! That is information I didn't want to know. Great song.

  • HAHA Alex is so awkward in this

  • Cry Like A Baby - The Box Tops [Memphis, Tennessee] - No.02 for 2 weeks on 3/16/1968. 12 weeks top 40 - "Gold hit. AMG pick. One of my favorites. I had good times listening to this Blue-Eyed Soul classic." - The Best Of The Box Tops: Soul Deep (Arista)-1996. NOTE: This compilation was given a 4.5 star Album Pick at allmusic's site and remains the definitive set too get!

  • What year was this?!?!

  • @ittsnichole It was released in February 1968.

  • i used to adore this song

  • What year was he booed....also when and how did he die? Frank in Jersey

  • I don't remember the year that was. I want to say the band Frente was also on that show, but I could be wrong. I believe there was some rift between the Counting Crows and a local radio station in that debacle as well. It was awesome and deserving of respect how the singer stood up for Alex, as an emerging band at the time he put his money where his mouth was. It wasn't the whole audience or indicative of Chicago crowds, just a bunch of idiots singing "Nah Nah Nah Hey Hey Good Bye" and booing.

  • Nice to hear your group on line.. Miss seeing you in Utah.. When you traveled with other groups in local clubs... Hope your in joying life.. take care.. Tina

  • RIP Alex!!

  • I know they're just miming, but shouldn't the guitarist be holding an electric sitar for this video?

  • I use this song to pace my jogging strides since 1970's...still works and I still in shape to keep at it for 50 more years...this song transcends the late 1960's into the year 1970. I started running from age 13 due to this song motivated me. Its too bad today most young listen to disgusting/condescending rap and hip hop music that glorifies stupity, gang violence (murders, rape, robberies, sexual perversion) and dressing down to being idiots in the streets.

  • What's the keyboadist doing these days? and does he like younger chicks

  • I saw Alex open for the Counting Crows in Chicago, and the audience boo’d him off stage, then the singer from Counting Crows came out and bitched at the crowd saying “Don’t you idiots know who this guy is!?”, and people were yelling “Shut up and play Mr. Jones, hippie!” Alex never finished his set, but the Crows played their then one and only hit Mr. Jones as the last song in their set, and in a slow acoustic squeeze box arrangement as retaliation.

  • @BuddyGreenfield Way to go Crows! A pox on the audience!!!!!!!!!!

  • @BuddyGreenfield Sounds like a lot of assholes were in the crowd that night. At least the singer from Counting Crows stood up for his fellow musician.

  • @BuddyGreenfield That same thing happened to Jimi Hendrix when he opened for the Monkees, lol.

  • @BuddyGreenfield That crowd needs to burn in hell. -_- excluding you

  • @BuddyGreenfield wow I what idiots too boo Alex! Good on Adam though from Crows :)

  • AWESOME - what memories....

  • Terrific footage, priceless! Thanks so much for making this available.

  • Sounds like Eddie Money got his sound from them

  • Alex lives on via you tube.........hopefully for many generations to enjoy

  • @buffspringfield I weep in buckets for the so-called future of music artistry.

  • @Rottyman63 So do I =(

  • @Rottyman63 You and me both!! I'm a Gen-X'er and I have to admit most of my generations music sucks tick-infested donkey balls!! From about the early 90's on to today most music has gone straight to hell. It started with that gloom n' doom grunge crap and has now morphed into that resounding joke called Lady Gaga! Makes me want to puke!

As far as I'm concerned they can keep their future crap, I'll keep listening to where the great music really is...in the past!

  • @ryanspeed If i had a dollar for everybody who says the same...

  • absolute cracker !! :)

  • Rest in Peace Alex...59 years old..gone too soon..Thanks for the music..

  • Thank you for the great video to me, SixtiesPopGold-san!!

May Alex's spirit rest in peace...

    Otaku3 (^_^)/

  • damn, hes gotta be on acid up there...

  • @TheCannabisKing

Nah, I think he really hated miming other peoples songs when he was perfectly capable of writing and performing his own.

  • Gotta give props to Alex. As a kid in the 60s I remember this song making an impact on me as having a real cool sounding singer doing it, the same thing with The Letter, even more so with that. He was the first one that made me think ' wow that guy's voice sounds uniquely singularly COOL.It had a nice gravel to it and I was just a child and it interested the 'producer ' in me (I'm into sound production, and a musician now) & it was years before I knew it was the same guy. Good post. RIP, Alex

  • Alex, you left us much too soon......you left the water running......rest in peace

  • @zazuzillen good comment.. The Letter is a great one, too.... I wonder does anyone know whats's the deal with the cat at the end of it? We're gonna cover the song and I was gonna make a tape of my cat meowing to put in the mix...

  • R.I.P. Alex Chilton

  • It's not Eddie Money; his name was Alex Chilton.

  • I always wondered where eddie money came from ! great song

  • i met the box tops. got letters and pictures. went on date few times

  • @kaleyjo345 sure u went on dates....

  • I love the part early on in the song when the drummers cymbal makes the sound of a snare!!!

  • Thanks 60's pop gold.
