I'm just 14 years old, and I think it's such a shame that young people like me listen to lady gaga and beyonce whereas this kind of music is just... brilliant, awesome... the 60's and all... Now there is just commercial music and teenagers listen this kind of shit !
yes you are right his wearing his pants the wrong way round,,,now thats funny,,,,,the reason his not confortable ,because his miming to his record,,,thay always did that on tv,,,
very very funny comments,,,, ( is he wearing his trousers the wrong way round,,,hahahhahahhahhahahhahahahahha!!!!!! funnyyyyyyyyyyyy,,,,the reason the electric guitar is not pluged in is because most of the bands play to there records ,,,,some times the singer will sing ,but the band pretend to play,,,,well ,,only on tv or pop programs on tv,,,,when i was on tv with my band we complain about this but did not help,,,thay where the bosses,we work for them
Alex Chilton, the lead vocalist for The Box Tops, was taken to the hospital in New Orleans on March 17, 2010, complaining of health problems, and died the same day of a suspected heart attack.
My father was a DJ for KILT in Houston back in the days of Top Ten Radio. This music, and others of its genre defined my appreciation for the oldies. Dear music, please get back to where you once belonged. This is what I love most about youtube!
This was their follow up song to The Letter. Just as good, in my opinion. I was 16 at the time and was very into all the music of the day. The intro sounds as good today as it did in 1967... that guitar riff just melts me.
@SixtiesPopGold ....true...it was neon rainbow...then cry like a baby...was i met her in church or choo choo train the follow up to cry like a baby? i was in 7th grade in '68, so i forget but remember both of those songs too....and soul deep and sweet cream ladies....guess that was about it for the box tops' top 40, huh?
Cry Like A Baby - The Box Tops [Memphis, Tennessee] - No.02 for 2 weeks on 3/16/1968. 12 weeks top 40 - "Gold hit. AMG pick. One of my favorites. I had good times listening to this Blue-Eyed Soul classic." - The Best Of The Box Tops: Soul Deep (Arista)-1996. NOTE: This compilation was given a 4.5 star Album Pick at allmusic's site and remains the definitive set too get!
I don't remember the year that was. I want to say the band Frente was also on that show, but I could be wrong. I believe there was some rift between the Counting Crows and a local radio station in that debacle as well. It was awesome and deserving of respect how the singer stood up for Alex, as an emerging band at the time he put his money where his mouth was. It wasn't the whole audience or indicative of Chicago crowds, just a bunch of idiots singing "Nah Nah Nah Hey Hey Good Bye" and booing.
Nice to hear your group on line.. Miss seeing you in Utah.. When you traveled with other groups in local clubs... Hope your in joying life.. take care.. Tina
I use this song to pace my jogging strides since 1970's...still works and I still in shape to keep at it for 50 more years...this song transcends the late 1960's into the year 1970. I started running from age 13 due to this song motivated me. Its too bad today most young listen to disgusting/condescending rap and hip hop music that glorifies stupity, gang violence (murders, rape, robberies, sexual perversion) and dressing down to being idiots in the streets.
I saw Alex open for the Counting Crows in Chicago, and the audience boo’d him off stage, then the singer from Counting Crows came out and bitched at the crowd saying “Don’t you idiots know who this guy is!?”, and people were yelling “Shut up and play Mr. Jones, hippie!” Alex never finished his set, but the Crows played their then one and only hit Mr. Jones as the last song in their set, and in a slow acoustic squeeze box arrangement as retaliation.
@BuddyGreenfield Sounds like a lot of assholes were in the crowd that night. At least the singer from Counting Crows stood up for his fellow musician.

@Rottyman63 You and me both!! I'm a Gen-X'er and I have to admit most of my generations music sucks tick-infested donkey balls!! From about the early 90's on to today most music has gone straight to hell. It started with that gloom n' doom grunge crap and has now morphed into that resounding joke called Lady Gaga! Makes me want to puke!
As far as I'm concerned they can keep their future crap, I'll keep listening to where the great music really is...in the past!
Gotta give props to Alex. As a kid in the 60s I remember this song making an impact on me as having a real cool sounding singer doing it, the same thing with The Letter, even more so with that. He was the first one that made me think ' wow that guy's voice sounds uniquely singularly COOL.It had a nice gravel to it and I was just a child and it interested the 'producer ' in me (I'm into sound production, and a musician now) & it was years before I knew it was the same guy. Good post. RIP, Alex
@zazuzillen good comment.. The Letter is a great one, too.... I wonder does anyone know whats's the deal with the cat at the end of it? We're gonna cover the song and I was gonna make a tape of my cat meowing to put in the mix...
I remember drinking to this song, back in 68, in high school. Kids loved this song, to dance.
