Curling up with my first girlfriend almost 40 years ago and listening to many of Paul's songs and feeling it really was us against the world - her parents didn't like me - and the circus never did come to town.

@KuznVinny So true. I have cherished this song, by this songwriter/performer since the first time I heard it - Paul Williams and his poetry and musicality helped me through many bad times in my live. American Idol is a corporate construct. Paul wiliams was and is a true musical genius.

I think your previous comment of Genius is more appropriate in Paul William's case.

To me he comes from that line of 20th Century songwriters-Irving Berlin,Gershwin,Mercer,Hank Williams,Paul McCartney to name a few-whose words and music will endure for centuries.
