  • these great song written by Roger McGuinn and Gram Parsons does not belong to Sweeheart album but the next one : Doctor Byrds and Mister Hyde.

Mc Guinn had an another project : a double one covering many aspects of popular american music.

Gram had the help of Chris Hillman against McGuinn so there was Sweetheart of the rodeo.

It is true that the question of egos between people are obvious in any thing, also inside a rock band.

Think of David Crosby in the Byrds before.

  • Yes The Sweetheart Vocals were redone as Gram still had a record contract with another company, the Byrds Record company was worried about that and got Roger to redo the Vocals (Gram's Vocals are Reinstated in the Re-release series and the Box Set That came out about 20 years ago) Gram Left the Byrds Because they were going to Tour South Africa, and Keith Richards Talked him out of going there for political reasons.

  • This is a song written by Gram Parsons. McGuinn was jerk and removed any reference to Gram from the Byrds 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo'. McGuinn was jealous that Gram was able to lead the Byrds into doing a 'country record'.

Tension developed between Parsons and McGuinn McGuinn had some of Parsons' vocals re-recorded, by the time the album was released in August, Parsons had left the band.

I believe that is called stealing.

  • @TheGranule Everything you say is not true. Mcguinn and Parsons both wrote the song; as they both experienced what happened with this disk jockey. Nobody Stole anything and Gram is credited on "Sweethearts" So why don't you do research before spreading lies and rumors on the 'net you jerk.

  • Rick is right, it's about Ralph Emory and being an asshole to The Byrds.

  • The song was about Ronald Reagan

  • @rick3dou no, it was actually about ralph emory a racist prick nashville t.v. host who treated the byrds like shit when they were on his program. then gram and roger wrote this.

  • @rick3dou Didn't know Reagan was a dj..who woulda thunk it

  • Man, listen to that telecaster.

  • thx for posting ! Nice song regarding racist♪

  • im a beaner an i like this song it reminds me of corridos in spanish music about saling drugs

  • Tea Party Theme Song! ! !

  • From "Dr Byrds and Mr hyde" have the LP, very ironic

  • He's a drug store truck drivin' man

  • Sounds like it'd be a good theme song for Limbaugh.

  • Im 58 now this is as close to the truth as you could get and is still a great lyrical trac

  • dam hippies.

  • Commies too as like as not.

  • @punkrockefeller "Peace &Love" bro

  • This one hits the nail on the head.

I met a chap like Ralph when I was in spain. 'Purus Fachas' was engraved on the walls of his palace. It's ironic isn't it how much drug money ultimately goes to extreme right wing scumbags.
