Never did understand it.

I mean that 3rd rail is so unrealistic - i thought the format died off years ago. At least the tracks have ties on them now - before they were all metal with two metal ties at each end of the track section and one in the middle.

The trains themselves were really detailed, though.

The third rail is for power so is the right rail.

As unrealistic as 3-rail track looks, it has one big advantage - you can lay balloon loops, triangular junctions and diagonal cut-offs on oval layouts without having to worry about isolation or causing dead shorts.

On the other hand, Peco still makes a nice range of 2-rail O-gauge track, and Lima used to make 2-rail O-gauge trains, albeit European or British.
