hey, have you gotten the new engine in ther yet? i remember i had the exact same prolem with my ae92 when i turbod it! the way i got arround it was i put a computer from a turbo mr2 into it and it ran fine afterwords! check out my vids and you can see it runs really good.... the first exhaust note vid i made was on the stock computer, and you can see that it ran like shit, but the other two vids of it wher on the turbo comp. it makes a huge difference only other mod was a 4agze map sensor.
Like all the other cage projects they all got scrapped. We still have all the knowledge and skills to utilize a well built car again in the future, but for now the focus is on motorcycles. As I've told a few other people, the power to weight ratio of a 75hp bike w/ a 380lb wet weight is faster than ANY car I could afford. Not to mention the bikes engines get 40+mpg in full race trim. We have some secrets to share with the 4AF(E) community rather soon.
Never worked with one, but, over the years I've figured out the holes in the setup and someday will return to working on another turbo corolla. At the moment it's been all about motorcycles as the R&D on a bike is soooo much more affordable to find the right character out of a certain engine type.
I'm looking at getting a 1988 corolla for my first project car and I was wondering what was the best gear that I could put on it. I'm just getting into cars and its kinda hard to decide which kit I want to put on it. My friend said his dad had already put some pistons in that were lighter and machined down but other then that its completely stock
You can't play with a turbo like that and just shut it down :-) Which of these comes with the 5M, that's what I'm looking for? Or is the 5M in it now?
I'm well aware, but, that is more dictated by the car not only reaching operating temperature but also on the premise that the engine and turbocharger are not junk. ;-)
(seals and bearings in the turbine were worn and the rear main seal in the engine was leaking. This was more or less for development purposes)
The 5M-GE came exclusively in the 1982-1985 Toyota Supra, more commonly known as the "celica supra". Look for a 5M Corolla from us eventually, but not right now.
i have a 90 prizm with the 4afe motor in it and have been doing some work to it. its my second motor as the first one blew holes out the sides of the block from broken piston arms. Now my question to you is, what is everything you needed to do to get this motor to accept the boost. I am looking to do the same and already have a race muffler installed and pretty darn good short ram semi cold air intake installed. please email me the specs.
i have this same car basically...except no turbo and its nicer inside...4AFE 5speed...oh and mines a station wagon...nice reliable/fuel efficient car.. and it looks like a grandma-mobile so teh police leave me alone...
How might one get his hands on this build sheet you mention? I have a '90 prizm with the 4AFE/5spd, wanting to go with a turbo 6-8psi nothing drastic just enough to make it a bit more fun to drive...badass video btw, sucks it was cutting out but that first gear pull did sound pretty hairy.
love th rolla mann i was lucky to get my 1990 rolla with 113k for 800 bucks to bad its automatic u think it would be a good ideal to run a turbo on it? it would be sweet with 5 speed but i really dont thing its possable doing a tranny swap.later on down the road what wuld be sum good ideals for a moter swap if i needed it?
The AE92 is a cheap car, getting used to it with your auto model and figuring on the swap as to weather or not you want to keep that kind of car around or move to a more sporty chassis is key. I personally would just drive the auto into the ground and save up for a 5 speed model, buy the nessesary parts for turbocharging, run 6-8psi, and rock a turbo corolla for 150,000 happy boosted miles and forget you ever owned an auto in the first place. Or turbocharge what you have.
but overall, the best bet you have is getting a 2nd car to play with as a project to get into turbocharging corolla's.
Thanks for your comment, it's good to see an enthusiasm for the Corolla chassis and we are more than happy to help in terms of what to buy and what works for what. There is alot of tuning involved when it comes to troubleshooting and setup but once it runs right, it runs forever like a toyota should.
BTW, a silver or blacktop 4AGE is said to be the best swap overall.
An Apexi SAFC would be great as it would replace the need for the 2 bar map sensor from the SW20 MR2 Turbo. A megasquirt system would be a wonderful option too.
The corolla's are reliable under 10psi on stock everything with just a new map sensor. Quite a few people have followed my build sheet and gotten some awsome results but most got greedy and could feel how insane powerful the car was on high boost. 6-8psi is safe all day on the stock components, any more and it comes apart.
A rising rate fuel pressure regulator and a healthy ignition retard allows the little 4AFE motor to breath boost as long as your willing to run 91 octane and not turn up the pressure above 8-12 psi on a T3. The car in the video had 313,700 miles on it when the turbocharger was installed and had I spent the money on a few more parts it would still be around.
It proved it works, it proved it's promising, it proved you don't need a GE to make respectable numbers.
I needed a rising rate FPR, Toyota 3 bar map sensor from an MR2, a MSD 6AL box, and a restrictor for the oil inlet and it would have boosted all day long. Money got tight and the project was abandoned. A friend has a few T3's laying around and I have a few options on the table for another turbo corolla. Stay tuned to the channel, we are going to start working on a turbo setup that is fully dialed in for high boost on C12/93 octane "race" blend.
Yep, it's a 1.6 EFI engine, the internal components will hold up to about 8-12 psi out of a T3, the pistons are first to go then the connecting rods and wrist pins. The major problem is finding a way around the MAP sensor. Still havn't found a way aside from stand alone engine and ignition management.
dud what toyota year is that 1991??? it looks like my interior and it it the original motor, where did u get the turbo for it if its the orignial motor!!!
Ebay, Greddy TEO4H, porsche/bosch BOV, 2 inch plumbing, no intercooler, factory electronics, it was cutting ignition when it saw over 10psi. It only lasts so long before its over.
It is a 90 or 91, no clue anymore, we've had so many of these things.
It's a Bosch unit off of a turbo saab. I think it was a 9-3 or a 9-5 turbo it came off. Some volvo's run them too. Porsche does also. In the video it wasn't making any more than 3-4psi, it was hitting an ignition cut due to the map sensor being messed up. It's ultra loud when it is boosting a full bar. If you have ever heard Max Orido's (D1 judge) Ridox Supra that psycho "dose" that is pretty much the same. When I put another one together I will be sure to get a full boost pull on film.
hey man that thing is great, i have a 1996 corolla with the 4afe it has 230,000miles. i am planning on boosting it but i want to leave the internals stock. u seem to know tons about 4a engines do u have an email for questions?
The factory electrics can be convinced to run boost if you have the right hardware, ie. FPR, 2 or 3 bar map sensor, all that jazz. It was cutting out at about 4psi and I found it to be getting TONS of fuel but it was bumping the ignition cut off because it was seeing boost. I pulled the wastegate vacuum refrence off it, disconnected the map sensor, and ran a full bar through it until the rear main seal on the engine went. Took alot to kill it, even then, it was used non turbo for a month after.
LOL That was a the blown oil seals in the turbo smoking like mad. It was open right off the turbo! No downpipe or exhaust. Just header, turbo, and atmosphere. Hooray for not living in a smog/emissions state! ;-)
I ran a GM 2 bar from an old SSEi bonnie. The damn thing never worked right and kept hitting fuel cut, the video here shows it. When I turned around in the vid it boosted all of 1st gear and then cut. When I get another corolla I will be doing the whole GZE bottom end and a ported and ITB'd top end setup. I have done some research and soon will have a definite answer for everyone, but, HKS GE/GZE 272 cams MIGHT fit the FE head! An "F"(carb) vacuume advance ignition would have to be used though.
i have a 4afte that just did 300hp fully rebuilt and balance just a peak ......4afe motor with 4agze internals crank, rods,cp pistons, itb`s off the silvertop all ARP BULTS and more it can be done if anyone wants to se the build and dyno and pic`s hit me up. peace
I knew it could be done!!!! I have been preaching this shit for 8 years and nobody would listen, now what do you all have to say for your sorry ass GE having selfs???? HUH????????? Come on you pricks!!!! This is the ultimate head design!! Dont even try to argue with me about it!
WHAT?? thats good to hear..! maybe ill make it around their.. stock internals? regular engine? stock other than the head gasket? and about the boost retard ignition system are you using the msd? if you are could you tell me what wire diagram i will need to use to hook up an msd 6al and the boost timing master? or send me a link for help?
I never wired one in myself and lost contact with the guy I knew that did MSD kits. I suppose if you bought the 6al kit it would have a diagram and the corolla wire diagram would be the best refrence I can think of to wire it into the system.
STOCK EVERYTHING! screw needing forged internals, you need an intercooler and the proper oiling and cooling system and you can boost all day on a stout little engine like the 4A series.
The turbo kit is toast, I have been helping others with theres so far. I managed to get 32psi through the motor for a few weeks before the seals started to leak oil from all the pressure and heat. The FE is STRONG!!!
The project list is this right now: 1997 Suzuki Bandit 1200 S, 1991 corolla AE92 sedan with a KLZE mazda 6 cylinder in it, a 1985 Kawasaki GPz600R, also the XS Interceptor, also the 82' Maxim 750. We build street fighter bikes and sleeper cars for ourselfs. Most hot cars running around the area know of us or have had help from us.
I just read your comment on what you were using, thanks a lot if i get it working ill give you a shout, need to make the money to buy it first. haha. you will be the first one i send my new video to. your help is much appreciated. Where is your shop located?
Lodi, Wisconsin area in a quaint little town called Harmoney Grove. Its not a full shop but it takes care of us and our pursuit of the meaning FASTER.
I do have a fuel pressure regulator maxed, And apexi neo.. do you think just bigger injectors is enough? or a new fuel pump too? Thanks a lot for the info on the head gasket, i didnt know i could do that to the 4agze. And i found the cause of the bogging problem, the kit came with a "black box" and it was messing up my map sensor. it boosts fine now that i took off the black box, but still lean. So any idea if just bigger injectors would be enough for 7psi?
At TOC Tuning we are normal guys, just like all of you, with outragous knowledge of how capable some designs are. We like to show everyone that you dont NEED to have a honda B series, a toyota 4A-"G"E variant, or a nissan SR type.
We believe in a "come as you are" attitude that helps us grow as a small buisness, we like to be on the level with the common enthusiast and tuner. No racing or sponsers, no dyno buisness or parts shop. Just a few honest men out to help any way they can.
You have to remember these cars are not supported by the aftermarket and boosting them is not easy, nor does anyone really want to help you do this to a corolla.
We at TOC Tuning believe in our fellow man, his dreams, and his financial obligations no matter what the situation. We like to help people develop a true understanding of the means nessasary to facilitate quick numbers and impressive performance.
Parts I use are as follows: 2.0mm HKS Stopper metal head gasket for a GZE, you just have to modify the water jacket holes (near bolt on for a FE), 90+ octane rated gasoline, supra mk3 fuel pump with modified pump holder, GM 2 bar map sensor, or, stock with a check valve for testing. As for the rest, an MSD ignition with a boost friendly advance/retard capability.
yes a "blow through turbo system is possible, 5-8psi possibly. Just dont expect it to make more than 4000rpm before your needing higher main jets in the carb. A retart system on your ignition too. rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Check for new jets, if you can go bigger on the factory 2 barrel then you can boost.
hey does your car bogg under boost? i keep blowing head gaskets, and i dont know if a gm 2 bar map sensor is going to help me. Please get back to me..
It was cutting out under boost, and the bogging is probably caused by a lack of fuel. The blowing head gaskets part is the super oxygen rich mixture that is burning so hot its cooking the lowest melting temp in the area first and that happens to be the head gasket, get a 2.0mm HKS 4AGZE "stopper" gasket, machine it to flow the FE water, and you got a boostable FE. YOU HAVE TO RUN MORE FUEL TO RUN BOOST OR YOU WILL BURN VALVES AND PISTONS AFTER IT BURNS HEAD GASKETS. Hope this helps
road and do it easy, its not worth the money to put something custom together, unless you are swapping the head onto a GZE bottom end, and using a 2.0mm HKS stopper head gasket and a massive turbocharger on forged pistons, then some race fuel, and viola! 600+hp for about 5 dyno pulls before it starts getting to be too much on the oiling system and you have to back it off to 2 bar. lol
Buy a real kit, its worth the 1500 or so you will spend, its alway better to base it more power off an already made motor. In my case it was already tuned for hardcore NA... that lead to it not liking the turbo system and, the turbo failed before this vid, notice the smoke in the cabin on take off. It now sits welded to a cracked and cut 4AFE manifold, in my garage, as a reminder to buy it new, not ebay'ed. Good luck with your turbo system and take the high
Sounds interesting, I'd like to know more about this setup. All standard internals?
Also it sounds like you have a reduction type starter, which is weird because the 4AFE Corollas here is Aus are convetional type and are located on the firewall side. I took note of that because I had to change/move starters to fit a turbo on myself.
Its on the firewall side, stock everything, needed a new GM 2 or 3 bar map sensor. I got the sensor and installed it but discovered the turbo's seals are shot to hell. So, long story short, its back to N/A.
its been awhile bro, do you still have it, my friends 300hp 4afe corolla is done. check it out. type in corolla hulk. peace man

OK, everybody, YOU HAVE TO MOD THE FUEL SYSTEM! rising rate fuel pressure regulator, piggy back FMU, ect.
I have been doing turbo setups for a little bit now and find the corolla to be the most puzzling car so far to boost. But, the rewards are worth it.

can i turbocharger my 4af carburated motor or will ill blow to bits
uahmusic 4 years ago
yes a "blow through turbo system is possible, 5-8psi possibly.

Hope this helps

i think the turbo would have been alright if you had an intercooler to cool it down cause that snail over heated and cracked the manifold.

road and do it easy, its not worth the money to put something custom together, unless you are swapping the head onto a GZE bottom end, and using a 2.0mm HKS stopper head gasket and a massive turbocharger on forged pistons, then some race fuel, and viola!

Damn, that's not good to hear. I hope you can get another turbo on there soon. At least there's someone who has tried and not just said they would.
Get a cooler on there ASAP as well if you can, you thank yourself for it later.
Keep up the good work.
