This was the first song my Play-Mama Jean heard me singing... she was the first person to hear me sing. She died today, I will forever cherish THIS song!!!!! R.I. everlasting P. Mama Jean!!!
Saw Shalamar in concert @ San Mateo...they really do sing like this..even better than their record...wish they could get back together...RIP Don Cornelius..we love you always.
By the way, one more thing concerning this classic tune... I was on wikipedia looking up the information on this song. It had something on there about the three making a remix (long before 'Diddy' "invented" it!) of this for the then-World Champion Seattle Sonics (I guess that would've been for 1978-79. I'm sure 1979-80 was the beginning of the "Showtime" Lakers). "Sonics come around"? Or, "Sonics come to play"? Is that a fact? If so, I'd like to hear it. I could probably dig that real tough!
Wow. Never knew they had an official video for this classic tune. But after seeing the excellent late-70's "Soul Train" performance (the version that should be up on here, but, yeah, I do understand the legal issues around that, especially now with Brother Don's passing) on that "Hippest Trip in America" documentary again last night, I just had to come on here and look this song up to hear the entire joint. They had those moves on point, huh? Lol! This must've been the roller rink jam by the...
...summer of 1980! And even though I wasn't there, unfortunately (only born in '83...yeah, sucks, huh?), I could just picture right now what Empire Blvd. looked like when the 1979-1980 school year ended in our good ol' County of Kings. The 80's had just begun, and summer was ON! Everybody had to hit that rink when this one came on the box. They would watch "Soul Train" at 11 (on Channel 11! :-)), then, hit Empire in the afternoon. Wow...must've been a great time in Brooklyn. Too bad I missed it.
No mistaking Jody Watley's voice in there. I can close my eyes and see myself roller skating to that song with multicolored mirror ball lights decorating the floor. You don't hear music like this anymore.
This is so awesome...I am a metalhead by and large today but this was the first record I ever bought - a 45rpm vinyl single of 'Second Time Around'. It still sounds every bit as sweet to me 32 years later. That is the mark of truly great music...timelessness.
@michaeljackson1978 True enough! There has been great talent coming from black music and I wish more could come from those like you who would support a resurgence of music like this to return! It's quite entertaining and enjoyable!
buena musiquita para bailar y escuchar tranquila, lo que dicen antes es cierto alguna musica ahora es muy mas de lo mismo, mucha violencia y sexo bien barato
I loved Shalamar. They were an awesome group. Even though I have seen that Unsung episode, and they didnt end so well, i still enjoy their music. I especially enjoyed watching Jody and Jeffrey dance. i watched them more than I watched Howard. They had some smooth well choreographed moves. Nowadays there are hardly any groups anymore.
Too bad Miss Jody says she's moved on from Shalamar. I would've paid big money to see her reunite with Howard Hewett, and, Jeffrey Daniel, right, gang?

Correct me if I'm wrong; Was Jody Watley a part of Shalamar? If that's the case, why was she eligible to be Best New Artist in 1987? I don't understand that. Oh, by the way, Love the tune.
black, white, Latina it didn't matter the race, they had talent, they could sing, and play instruments, and didn't need software programs to make them stars!!!
@katsrayoflight That's true! And the music tells it when you listen to the new stuff. I don't think it's being nostalgic to long for the old days like this. I think we just want something that sounds like skillful work in the music!
Truly a stellar performance, the lead and background vocals are heavenly. The two backup vocalists who were dancing really added a special dimension to the visual spectacle.
@theirishinc You see all those people on stage? It cost money to make a record, and it's the RECORD COMPANIES, not the artist, who decided to take the cheap way out by synthesizing (sp) everything. So don't blame the artists, blame the record companies for choosing to focus solely on profits rather than making quality music.
@theirishinc Agreed! The very same people who've given a lot of talent has changed it over time for the worst! Also, nothing racial here either! Just sayin'! Maybe there will be a revival they can bring back!
@theirishinc "Black Artists" didn't ruin anything. White Suburbia did. From the Corporations that pump out no-talent hacks, to the white kids that not only demand these wack-ass "artists," but also think rocking a flat-brimmed hat, tap-out gear, and tryna be from the hood is reality. That's exacly what and who ruined it.
@solo34 They didn't? Then explain to me why the last black artists I've ever seen or heard have a band and play instruments are Ice-T w/Body Count and Prince? Explain why blacks don't play instrument or have bands now? It's the corporations and white suburbia huh? They're the reason why blacks wont step up with a band and play instruments?
@theirishinc You can't beat good music with a stick.(Really Good Song) It has been 32 years since Second Time Around was released. 32 years before 1979 was 1947, and many of the Top 10 of that date were Country Western. Two artists were African American one being Mahalia Jackson, and the other Louis Jordan, that their music was good too. What did the old people think of our dance tunes. I embrace Swing, and the sound of the early 50s Perry Como, Patti Page, Four Freshman too.
@theirishinc I was thinking the same thing a few days ago. In the 70's and early 80's music be it black or white was SO much better. Now it's just talking, sorry, rapping about drugs, guns,, ho's and money. sad times indeed. :¬(
@theirishinc it may not been intended but your statement is the exact definition of racist. It's true music suck, but let's not forget your Lady Gaga's, your Ke$has, your Britney Spears, and countless of others that have ruin music as well. It's a generation thing, not a racial thing...and you're a sad person to not figure this out before hand...
@TheLastPaladin777 That's what the 'nothing racial intended' disclaimer was for. For people like you who will cry bitch and moan and play the race card. The whole point is, is that black music back in the day used to be great. It was music, they played instruments and could sing. And only a idiot would listen to Britney, Kesha and Lady Gaga.
@TheLastPaladin777 I agree with you that it sounded racist, like he was blaming bad music on black artists only while claiming such a comment could not be racist. Then he claims that you overreacted and that's why he had to say that nothing racial was intended before making his race comment. He's the real cry baby on this board for bringing up race when all he had to do was sit back, shut up and enjoy the song.
@theirishinc Wow. That's the most pathetic backhanded compliment, ever. On the one hand you admire black artists from the past. Then you blame black artists for having "ruined music these days." Of course you thought to hide your racism by claiming, "nothing racial intended here." Well, you might not have intended to be racist but it still sounds racist to blame the decline of modern music on black people. (BTW, I don't think it has declined. You're just not hip enough to "dig it.")
Damn!!!! I remenber growing up in Chicago.....Humbolt Park, and Middle School, Harriet Beacher Stowe. Shotout to everyone from that great era!!!!!!!!!! I even remenber my address.....1724 North and Sawyer. That was in 1979-1982.
@SubSlaveCD Original and classic Shalamar member Jody Watley with her genre bending repertoire has scored hits ranging from Pop, R&B Dance & Electronic from her solo debut in 87, through the 90's and as of 2007 with her last #1 in Dance/Electronic on Billboard Watley's 13th #1 Dance Single post Shalamar
These were great songs of our time. I remember dancing to this song at University of Zambia as a freshman in Lusaka. It was simply wonderful. We also listned to Donna Summer , George Benson, Prince and others. Great memories.
