Chewie's right, I'll take the liberty to explain.

Merging objects can make things stationary, as well as perfectly linear and formed. It's a way to make racetracks since the pieces simply merge with other pieces of the track and allow the track to be in midair without using a floating glitch. Sometimes, maps may not give you the correct size piece to make what you want. Simply merging helps this.

but ghost mergeing is so much better no restarting round and you can even merge into the map not just objects.
