Not only has music these days has changed for the worst, but tap dancing has also become a thing of the past. There is just no more talent in any genre anymore.
@tommiexander i kinda hear you, but that's an overtly pessimistic view. we dont watch clips from 30 years ago that arent anything but the absolute best of their time. there was a shitload of mediocrity back then too, it's just that, naturally, we dont choose to watch it.
I think that you don't grasp what I meant. Music these days have been basically reduced to rap or hip hop that uses synthesizers instead of live bands. Our genre of music and entertainment covered the whole gamit that included jazz, blues, soul, funk, R&B, live bands, tap dancing, pop, and more, which was what real music and entertainment was all about. You couldn't have made it in the music industry in those days if you were just mediocre or didn't have real talent....
@tommiexander i agree that music of yesteryear generally surpasses modern equivalents, however there are some great musicians out there too and it's overtly negative to put it in such simplistic terms as past = good, present = bad.
having said that pretty much everyting i listen to is from at least 30 years ago - and the modern guys i like are replicating that... but yeah, check out Henry Butler on the piano (do a search) and then tell me there isnt any class out there now ;)
I remembered the little girl's name who sang on this program: Jessica Wilson. Does anyone know where she is today? She was so adorable and sang SO beautifully. I have searched for her name to no avail. I hope she's still singing up a storm!!
This was the best show I've ever seen on TV. It was the reopening of the Apollo Theater, and the whole show was magnificent. I had it on tape until one of my kids recorded some dumb movie over it! There was a little girl named -- well her last name was Wilson. She sang, "If I Could," and I often wondered what happened to her; she was excellent and adorable. Does anyone know? Then she and a famous singer from the 30's sang "Ain't Nobody's Business." So many, many great talents!
That whole show was the best show I ever saw on TV! I used to have it on VHS. I wish I had the whole thing to watch now. I'd pay good money to have it and be able to watch it again. Billy Preston sang "Try a Little Tenderness," the whole thing was just awesome!

Sammy had to be in tip-top physical shape to do all of those dance moves.
My grandma used to call that hairstyle "fried, dyed, and laid to the side".
RIP, Sammy.

Would love to see the uncut version of this. Looks like the dancers danced a bit longer than shown.

Not only has the music changed for the worse these days, but this generation don't even tap dance anymore. We live in some sad times.
