We got BBC America when we switched to satellite TV, and they had a "The Tudors" marathon just this weekend (which we recorded on DVR). The costumes suggest "Brat Pack Goes RenFair" half the time, but the series does get into a LOT of Tudor history that other movies & miniseries on the period ignore - and is surprisingly sympathetic in its portrayal of English Catholics.
Plus I just really enjoy watching medieval and Renaissance dancing!
@Bruce99100 Actually King Henry VIII, the monarch who caused England to break from the Church of Rome in favour of the Anglican Church of England solely because of his own selfish ends, may well have been a gluttonous tyrant with grossly ulcerated legs and little regard for humanity in later life, was actually an incredibly handsome, slender and athletic man in his youth.
@Gavestonful He also was a great ruler in his younger years, building up one of the best navy's in history! He may have split from the church forhis own wants and needs, but that created whole new opportunities for his people. Do you really think that his daughter Elizabeth could have been as great as she was if England was not Anglican? Back then Religion and Power mixed as it never should have.
The Irish had way to much Celtic Soul for the British with their prim and proper dance steps, that's one of the reasons why the Brits wanted to destroy them!
@kalimaganeshshivan LOL, that's wildly absurd. And you couldn't get more "prim and proper" than the Irish dancing depicted on "Riverdance", with arms practically sewn to torsos. Personally I love that effect, but it has nothing to do with any notion - real or imagined - of "Celtic Soul".
what a despot...the arrogance of one king ruined not only numerous personal lives but by declaring himself head of the English church tore it in half...nothing to romanticize about this glutton.
I'm Irish, love this song and LOVE the Tudors! could this video get anymore perfect!?
