Hi SynthFreq, I came across your channel and watched a few clips. I'm amazed that you own so many old vintage synths and know how to play them. It's great fun when your sister also plays along, and I can clearly see that you are an enthusiastic player! After a while the music begins to repeat and I'd love to see eh hear more different sounds and melodies. Guess that'll make the music even more inspiring. Keep it up, you girls are musically gifted! :-D
How did can you afford, let alone come accross, all this awesome vintage equipment!? Did you loot an e-waste depot in Japan 20 like years ago, or something??
@aeopmusic HI :) my synths were all found at pawn shops. D-50, QX-3 seq., Emax SE, CZ-5000 were from the same pawn shop & in bad shape. The Juno (which is in extremely fragile shape) & JV-880 were bought online for cheap since they both are physically fragile. Juno-1 nearly falls apart if I move it or pick it up. I bought them while in college. All of them had to be repaired by me but all are functioning now and loved to pieces. :)
Hi , what can i say? Excellent in a word :) As I just got 80's feeling again...your pitch bending performance was awesome like a guitar :) Thank you and you too very much :) Hope get more awesome in future. Take care.
Ok...A "personal technique" question for either one or both of you, since you're both very good at making those guitar leads really "sing". I know you prefer the "wheel" mod levers as opposed to the "joystick" type. Are you mostly working the pitch controller, or do you have a bit of the "Mod" wheel going as well? It appears that you guys mostly use the pitch to provide the vibrato. I'm guessing also you play 1/2 step off and "bend" to the final note here and there? Awesome work!! :-)
@DavRBailey HI :) Yes I prefer the older pitch bend wheels with a tight spring. The joystick type is tricky to control although the Jupiter-8s pitch bend assembly is the nicest I've tried. It's smooth, almost liquid. I never use the Mod wheel with the synths. The 'lfo' effect is physically controlled to whatever speed is needed for the lead style. My technique is to bend notes as transition + vibrato kind of thing. I try to play as realistically as I can to how a true guitar might sound.
We need to create a movie in which you two are transported back to the 80s to meet Anthony Michael Hall and John Cusack and have an adventure of some kind.
This kind of live made performances is good enough for a live concert for many, many 100,1000,10.000 or even more people enjoying your music,i think you should become proffesional signed musician(s) with an record contract and release an world wide public CD with your music!
@Kobolnova Live concerts bring the most joy. :) There's nothing like playing a live show outside for a rowdy audience who enjoys your work, and excellent moonlight and synths everywhere. :) Just the best time.
Nokia- Motif 6 isn't a vintage synth, it's newer but classic in relation to other keyboards available now. It's from 2000 and I enjoy playing it.
I know it's not "old school" and it wasn't designed to be lol. It has many sounds from the vintage synthesizers which is nice. They are actually sampled to give the most realistic sound and quality.
I never critique, 'cause I pretty much love everything you do, but you've always asked for comments. I know it's by necessity that you have to manually stop the drum machine. Is there a footswitch option to start & stop? Obviously if you program the actual "decoded" song, you can program an ending. The fear is that your songs may all sound too similar by having the drums end first, followed by a few measures of music and then an ending. I know that using a stock pattern makes this tricky.
@DavRBailey HI :) Thanks for your comments. Yes I really really wish there was a way to start and stop my Emx-1 but there is no such option on it. Only the TR-808 is the only drum machine in the studio that can. I never use stock patterns, they have all been erased & replaced by my own 80s & other styles. This drum machine came with mostly techno beats, & I just didn't use them, so I overwrote them all. I can however start and stop it with the QX-3 but then no EMX sounds are heard.
It's always fun to see how many ways you can re-arrange the studio! Haha. This layout is nice, 'cause you are both close in proximity, and I imagine it offers better connection with the other player. Of course, you two could be in separate rooms and it would still be tight. Downright telepathic. :-)
My apologies if I sound naive with regards to the Jupiter 8, but are you playing a split there? It sounds like you are playing the bass on the left and a chord progression on the right with another sound. I didn't know the Jupiter did splits like that. Cool!
@raymangold22 The JP8 certainly wasn't THE first one to have a split mode. There must be others too, but even in my studio there's at least two older synths that does split mode, Korg Trident (1980) and Yamaha SK-20 (1979). Also my Roland RS-505 (from 1978) kind of does it too with upper and lower kbd split.
I love the 80's vibe of this tune. Really cool..... you did a great job! - keybdwizrd
