@jetsonjoe Color is a field in itself and takes more space than I can use here. My first DVD has some basic color info, but I will spend more time on it in the new one I'm producing. Who doesn't use DVDs? Are you still using VHS tape?
@irudley Hey there...I was not being negative in any way...yes you are right colour is a subject on its own...I was only commenting that it would be interesting to see what colours assist you to your final working methodology...As for the DVD, I was only being funny...and the implied reference was that many people...not all...use direct downloads to their computer...I for one have not purchased a DVD in years...I only purchase online downloads...but you have to back up...or lose it. Great work!
@jetsonjoe I just checked out the feasability of offering my teaching DVD as a download. Being over an hour long, it would take a very long time to download. If I were to do it as a streaming video, the quality would not be as good, plus there would be extra cost by the host, which would be necessary to pass on to the customer, so the savings in postage for shipping the DVD would be gone. I think I'll just leave well enough alone, but thanks for the thought.
@irudley Hey ...I really think you are doing awesome work...definitely will look at purchasing the DVD...I was only commenting that much of what is available is in the form of direct downloads..so that one can enjoy immediately...Postage is a killer and so expensive...I am a firm believer in buying or renting all my "DVD" material on line...I really am trying to not have all this stuff around me...way too much waste.
I would encourage you to buy some time on a host & arrange paypal purchases!
This is excellent! Is it possible for you to do a youtube video of how you project the photo image on the canvas and how you sketch the image on the canvas? That would be helpful to me as I am interested in portraits. Thanks.
Mouth are always the most time consuming and hardest parts for me to do too. It's always those very subtle values that set the lips apart that get me. Very well done
Irv, this is such great instruction. I'm painting a self-portrait at the moment. Portraits are hard for me - well, colour is, drawing not so much - but I'm learning. It's quite a good likeness surprisingly. Thanks for your help here.
Yes, color is a complex subject, and I'm far from mastering it. In fact I'm taking a workshop in April on just that subject, with a great artist named Thomas Nash.
I would kill (well, not really lol) to go to a workshop like that. I've just found his website and it's very interesting. He shows how he sets up a portrait too.
Ha ha ha. Good point. Cheating is only wrong when you are hurting someone and how is a better result hurting anyone?
Amazing how you make this man look like a 'wild teddy-bear'. I mean He's seems like a warm and cuddly man but also 'man enough' to punch your lights out if you get on his bad side. It's all there. Great portrait.
Thank you for sharing this video, it helped me out a lot!

@chuckiiman It's pretty straight forward. Project the image onto the screen and copy it.
You also asked about acrylics. You need to go back and review some of my older comments. I explained why I don't use acrylics.

I'm sure my client will appreciate the personality profile you got from the painting.
Thanks for the compliment.
