@iCEL55 Yes, I'm in South West England in Cheddar, where the cheese comes from! I saw a flatfooting display at a folk festival a few years ago and loved it and thought 'I want to do that'! I was doing a bit of English clog dancing at the time and recognised the roots of flatfooting in some of those steps. Someone lent me a teaching video by the great Ira Bernstein and I sort of taught myself from that plus watching film footage, picking up steps here and there and making some up!
@IssyEmeney Well congratulations, I think you've captured the essence of flatfooting. It's nice to see how this beautiful rural dance is spreading throughout the world via Youtube. I discovered flatfooting a few months ago and I'm now learning a few beginner steps. I'm always watching your video for inspiration. If you had a teaching video, I would definitely buy one! Looking foreward to your next video, thanks again!
Great job Issy - so relaxed. I was at the Lincoln Session today and Jimmy and Jo from JSArts. They mentioned that you did this - I had no idea - and here you are.. Haven't they got you up for a workshop soon? Maybe I'll see if I've got spare time in the diary to sign up - it would be great to see you again. Tim
@micktim Thanks Tim. Yes, workshop with Kate Lissauer end of April - do come. You are right, people don't know I do this because it's so different from my other stuff musically. Hope people will come! See you there I hope. x
Very beautiful!! Very relaxed and entertained watching your dancing... Matches up with the tune so well... Can you post more on here? Awesome job... Oh yes and happy valentines day
Couldn’t help but smile while watching and hearing your perfect syncopation with the notes of the banjo. It was as though you were dancing on the strings... a delight to watch and hear. Thanks.
wow - that was great - Im from the states and can remember when I first saw this dancing up in the hills in Virginia - I absolutely love it. Your pace i great! I think I could even learn it if I could do it slowly like that (at least at first!). That was very pleasant to watch! Nice job.
I didn't expect a reply from you. I would love to come to your classes but I actually live 170 miles from Cheddar, I'm in North Wales. If you decide to run a workshop up here I would gladly attend.
I love this so much. I've picked up the little banjo tune and will credit Nigel when I play it but your dancing is so wonderful with its slow pace and rhythm. Yes, I've read your reasons for the slow pace but you do not need excuses. I have an warm emotional response to this video. Thank you
@PanWilson Thank you so much for that. It's always great to hear that someone has enjoyed my dancing. I'll pass on your comment to Nigel about the tune, which is a traditional one. I think it's called Hey little girl do what I tell you!
Hi, I just posted below and was checking out more flat footing. Did you ever think about doing demos dvds? I certainly would buy one..just for fun. Have you ever gone to the festivals? I particularly like the dance above bec.it is slowed down somewhat. This lets you appreciate the rhythm, steps, and intricacies of the dance. Post more!
@TheDistar10 Hi I replied to your earlier comment but it wouldn't send, so I sent you a message. Have a look in your in box. It's a bit slower partly because I did it at the end of teaching a 7 hour workshop so I was a bit tired! But I do like to dance at a steadier pace as it sounds more musical, which is what flatfooting is about as I understand it. I'll try and get round to making another little video soon. Thanks again for your comments.
That was incredible!!! I clogged for many years and always loved flatfooting. The rythums are just great. Did you start off clogging? Thanks for keeping such a great part of dance history alive! Is your location down south? I discovered you by accident. I was viewing the "Ebony Hillbillies" a group that does Old Timey music in the NYC subways. I know you would enjoy their music...check them out! Take care...
I love how people argue about where this originated.....lol Let me just throw something out there but doesn't seem kind of natural that people tap their feet to music or rhythm so it probably started all over in different places.
A thing that started not in America but in 17th century Lancashire, England where workers in the cotton mills would tap out the rhythms of the weaving machines with their clogs. I guess some took it to America when they emigrated?
You make it look easy, a sure sign of technical mastery. But this really is tap dancing for the rest of us. Knowing just a few steps adds greatly to the enjoyment of a bluegrass festival.
Kind of you to say so - thank you. If a festival invited me, I'd love to come! We only have one Old Time festival here. You might like to check out my web site just for interest. The other stuff I do is a bit different from Old Time and flatfooting. All the best.
You do this so well that you would pass for a vative born Kentuckian or Tennesseean. You need to grace some of our great southern old-time music festivals with your presence!
Thanks for that Sunnymusician. I did this video at the end of a long day's teaching flatfooting so I'm dancing a little slower than I would normally! Glad you liked it and sorry you can't hop on a jet plane to come to my classes!
I really enjoyed watching you dance. It is a simple style that is easy to watch. Actually, you make it look easy. Now if I can just learn how to do it too.
I just loved that. I am fascinated by the 1964 Best Bluegrass Clog Dancing Video. I would love to know the names of the dancers, and if they are still around. I would love to learn to dance like this.
Very good! Wish I could dance that well.

What is the banjo tune that you're dancing to?

@magnussmitt Hi - it's a tune with the dubious title of Hey Little Girl, Do What I Tell You. My Banjo player can't remember where he got it.
All the best Issy
