did you learn japanese by being immersed in it or did you go to japan already speaking the language?

@blkfrhwk Both! I've been to Japan twice now and the first time I had taken a semester's worth of Japanese and my speaking ability and confidence were both fairly low. After spending a semester in Japan, my speaking was much better.

This time, I went to Japan with about three years worth of classroom training. My speaking is much more proficient and varied, as is my writing, but my reading is terrible.

And yet, there is so much left to learn...!
