My dad had a mid 80's Grand Wagoneer with the V8. Atrocious fuel consumption, especially in town. He said the best he got was around 13 mpg, and that was after he put a smaller 2bbl carb from a 302 on it. He got rid of it after the fuel pump screwed up and pumped about 2 gallons of gas into the oil pan while the engine was running. He drained it out and it still ran but it was making some lower end noise. He traded it for an 85 2.2 5spd Caravan.
I learned how to drive on one of them just like that! I was only 10, my dad would let me drive it around the local town to the store and back, gotta love small country towns and AMC 360s.
Did you give it a few pumps of gas? Had it been sitting long? Sounds like the fuel bowl was drained a bit. Is the choke set right? If all that's good then maybe it's time to upgrade to the TFI ignition.
get rid of the cats on it the thing wil run so much better we did that to ours an a BIG!!!!! diffrence

Nice looking Jeep! I've always loved full-sized Jeeps of this style. It seems to take a while to fire up, but sounds good once it fires.

my girlfriend had one of these and it would never start.
rg2027x 3 years ago
That`s very common , these take forever to start all the time . Crap engines.
fontheking5 3 years ago
Not crap engines. The fuel would empty from the carb bowl and youd have to wait for the fuel pump to bring it back.
bigguy6100 3 years ago
and stop it from flooding....carburettors can be horrible

wranglersnmt 4 years ago
Damn shame they never came with fuel injection!
BobbieandSteveDooley 4 years ago
Yeah, it would get more than 7mpg then, but I like carburetors better. A whole lot better.
bigguy6100 4 years ago
"I like carburetors better. A whole lot better." Why? Is that what gives it the monster engine sound?
