  • I was only 12 when I first heard this song. I fell in love with Dan then and haven't ever fallen out. His poetry, his amazing inttrumental talent, his humble spirit. I love them all. I am so sorry we lost him too soon, but he left us a glorious legacy. Thanks, Dan. I know you're still with us from somewhere by that "River of Souls."

  • he moved to Colorado and loved it!

  • Too bad there isn't a live version of Home Free. If only I could get my hands on one. It would be as listened to as Neil Young live at Massey Hall. Man...too bad :(

  • OMG!! Has it really already been, four(4) years, since our collective heart, had a HUGE!! chunk excised from it, when this absolutey beautiful, humble, and talented artist was called home to Heaven?

We-make that-I still miss you, and your gorgeous music, Dan; and his surviving family.

  • So Awesome!!

  • This is beautiful.. I first heard this song as a test pressing. An engineer friend I knew in Nashville told me that he was the talk of the town.

  • What I would have given to see him early on...Dan will always be one of the best vocalist of all time and probably the best writer of ballads in the history of music. I will never forget this amazing artist, song writer and loving human being!!!

  • What a beautiful man, beautiful lyrics...forever he is missed.

  • I so miss you♥♥♥

  • Thanks for posting this. Brings back so many feelings of 25 years ago.

  • This is so very special! Thanks for sharing!

  • extraordinary....puts 98 % of singer song writers to shame.. nothing short of perfection

  • fantastic

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I may be only 28 years old but, Dan is/was probably my favorite artist of all time. The sincerity in his lyrics and the profound depths they reach into your soul is undeniable. This song especially.

  • I love Dans music, this was a real treat. I saw him in concert twice, something I cherish so much to this day. Thank God for every day we do live. Dan, till we meet again, thankyou1

  • Oh how this makes me cry. I remember being so burnt out from Classical Piano & wanting to play other music & seeing him do this in concert on his Grand Piano. Such a beautiful song...& shortly thereafter, learned to play every one of his songs. Then he came out with Netherlands which combined the symphonic & he gave me back my love for Classical music. I will always love him...& mourn him. Such a great talent lost. He will always remain one of my very special Heros.

  • @vickiehill1 I agree! This makes me teary.

  • Wow, that is so nice that there is a Memorial Garden. I would love to see photos if you have any. Thank you so much. He will always be one of my very favorites and I am still so sad that he is gone.

  • Wow, such a treat! Thank you beggarsgame...you made my day!

  • rest in peace dan fogelberg and thank you.

  • Thank you for this!

  • Dan music had influenced my life and is part of my family! What a beautiful man! Whenever I listen to him I'm transported to that time in my life when all was innocent!

  • An American legend! A great talent, missed by all.

  • Listening to Dan's voice is like a musical kaleidoscope...you hear, you feel, you taste, you smell, you love...we have been blessed to have heard his fingers playing and his voice singing, and his soul stirring ours. Thank you for this lovely early recording.

  • @TheNethergirl

the best and most accurate description of Dans work,..extraordinary

  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Now!!!! Long overdue. What a great tune from a very young Dan Fogelberg. Thank You Beggersgame.

  • tears

  • So raw, so young, so beautiful, and talented...what a brilliant man, and a life well lived! Thank you Donna for this treasure...our love for Dan lives ever on!!!!

  • Beautiful Donna..I was listening to this on CD this morning when I woke...looked it up to send to a friend..as usual you work is lovely..

    Hugs,

    River..

  • The best Fogelberg song ever, and he sounds soooo young, I will never forget what his music meant for me, and I am passing his music on to my children.

  • These songs are like hearing them for the first time.Having been a musician for the past 34 years I can only say that I will listen to Dan's music until I die.I bought this album when it came out.He was for so many people the best there could be.

  • so beautiful

  • I absolutely love him.

  • Brilliant.

  • Great Song, Great Poet and Great Video~T.Y!!

  • Thanks again for this. One of the most wonderful works I have ever heard.

I am listening to it again after listening to Birds at the end of Love in Time.

  • A Blessing... Holy... In Memory of MY BELOVED.. CHRISTOPHER JOHN BERRY- AUGUST 16TH, 1974- FEBRUARY 14, 2009.

  • Thinking and missing Dan on this day. Looked at my framed copy of his birthday announcement this a.m. and could only smile and give thanks for the legacy of music he left us.

  • Ranks as One Of The Most Beautiful Songs Ever Written By A Most Underrated Talent Who Ever Lived.

    R.I.P.

  • PS. Forgot to say that your video matches Dan's song beautifully.

  • Gawd, what a voice. Just listening to him sing this -- my knowing, now, what his career became, and him, then, just a 21-year-old "pup" about to break into the industry ... wow. Makes me shiver, thinking of the future that laid ahead of this "young" Dan Fogelberg.

    Thanks, Dan.

  • Thank you for posting this. So many memories... "Homefree" (in album form) was a gift to me from my first love; through his gift I immediately fell in love with Dan Fogelberg, the person, his music, which speaks what mere words cannot. Followed Dan from "Homefree" to (sadly) his last release. His music will keep him with me always, just as through his music, Dan will always "Let It Shine!" Absolutely beautiful song......

  • By the way, Dan released a song on the Souvineirs L.P. ....it was called..." Better Change" - I would love to hear this, or add this to my collection. This song ment so much to me growing up in the early 70's....if anyone has it, I would love to hear it. Thank you. God bless. Joemusic1390

  • Dan was truly a good hearted man. The words of his songs all tell a story about himself, or life or maybe even a special friend. I never realised how great of a musician and most importantly a human being Dan Fogelberg truly was.....a kind hearted man. Rest in peace Dan. Your music lives in our hearts forever. Sincerely, Joemusic1390

  • Oh yeah, it's Dan alright... and he bought the house in Nederland soon after this show. I am in Colorado and the snow is coming down and to listen to this!!!! Perfection ! Missing him today.

  • Oh, sorry. His speaking voice and diction must have changed a lot from when he was 22 to when he was in his 40s and 50s.

  • Didnt meant to sound cocky about the certainty of his voice. He was so young then it is kind of cute to hear how he sounded when he was younger than my son is now! He was a genuine man, glad you enjoyed him too. Dan Fans are the nicest.

  • He had throat surgery (his tonsils removed) at almost thirty. His voice was never the same, after that, but he wasn't sick as often as he was, early on, when he would cancel shows without much notice ...

  • That would explain the timbre difference, perhaps. Do you happen to know where the surgery fell in the timeline of his albums? It would be very interesting to listen for the difference between his last album before the surgery and his first album after.

  • It apparently affected both timbre and range ... I BELIEVE (but do not know for sure) the surgery was right after "The Innocent Age" ... there's a noticable difference in range after that album ... his website (that's still up, I believe, has some old interviews in which he explained it, but I don't remember if he says when he did it ...

  • Thanks for the tip, jiffin1. You're right: It's on the Web site, 3rd question in the FAQs. He says he had the tonsilectomy in 1980, which would put it between Phoenix (released 1979) and The Innocent Age (1981).

  • I'm confused: I'm pretty sure the voice in the intro is ~not~ Dan's. And you can hear someone in the crowd call him "Randy."

  • Thank You beggarsgame, I saw Dan 3 years later as a surprise 1st date outing...memories flood back with this song as the opening to his show, Will never forget this voice, such passion in many of his lyrics, this is just one of them.

  • This is a nice find for a snowy, cold night. It warmed me right up :)

Beautiful song and video....love it very much.

  • bobdudeaz... i think I saw the same tour... DF was gentle and simple in those days. I miss him and the days.

  • ONE WORD....BEAUTIFUL. I recall seeing Dan @ AZ State Univ in ~1980ish.....Dan, a piano and four guitars...WOW!!!!! Thank you for the incredible video

  • Beggarsgame, you have created an exceptionally well-done video (so creative). Thanks so much for keeping Dan alive in our minds :)

  • Was there ever a more beautiful soul to walk this planet...he'll live in my heart forever. I miss him so. :-(

  • Probably my favorite Fogelberg song next to "Souvenirs" and "Believe In Me". I really like this live version.

  • Wow.....What a true gift to hear this friend we all miss..Thank you so much...To the Morning 2009

  • A year now since Dan began singing with the angels above, , , miss you brother, your voice still resonates with your friends here below.

  • At the age of 46 going on 47, I still look to this guy as a role model for someone I'd like to be. Great guy-so functional, so beautiful.

God Bless Dan Folgelberg. Will Scott

  • Being about your age also..I think I got kind of late into the game...heard DF for the first time on the radio Jan 1980 with "Longer"... since then it was unavoidable... to want to hear more from his music work...never had a chance to see him play with my own eyes or meet him...but I sure have learned from his ways to create songs..great to hear him like this...

  • Your story is the same as mine. 1980 probably about January..it was snowing out.. with "Longer." I too have learned from his music to create songs. I don't know how I didn't hear of him before that-apparently he was prolific enough and had a heavy fan base. I really liked his value system. He didn't appear to be moved by the Holly Wood (sp)elite. Didn't hear of him via Star magazine or anything else like that.

  • I first heard him singing Nether Lands on my radio late at night . It must have been about 1977

  • Got to see dan on his last two tours, I'm 23 so that was when I was 17 and 18. Thank God I got to see him sing this song. it was almost as good as this one.

  • Jeez i had freakin goosebumps the whole time i was listening to this. Just heavenly.

  • A rare gem indeed. Stunning. The recorded version is sublime; this is better, more soulful.

  • Love this song. Great video and thanks beggarsgame for sharing this rare jewel. Will go straight to my playlist. 5+

  • beggar

Where did you get this? Amazing!! What a great gift you have given us. I saw Dan 9 times starting in 1982 when I was at UCLA..... I miss him more than I can say... This was our song Aman... Hope you are well out there....Joseph

  • His vocals and piano performance are truly a gift from above. The imagery that was included in this video really made me wish I was flying around witnessing all of those moments all the while I was listening to Dan sing this song, that would be awesome.

  • Oh my... This is a bittersweet awakening to a rainy morning here in Iowa. I cannot believe how touching this song is. Dan is so incredibly missed. Thank you Jean Fogelberg for giving Dan some wonderful years. And thanks to all of the fans who help keep his memory alive.

  • The opening piano work here puts a lump in my throat and causes the tears to well. Is he really gone? The sound--so sweet and so simple and yet so majestic at the same time. There will never be another.

  • KCUV-FM radio station will be re-broadcasting this concert. It will start 8pm Mountain Time. You can go to the radio station site to listen.

    Can't wait!

  • what day ??

  • I am so sorry, it's this Sunday, August 10th. Go to the Living Legacy website and they have the information. Also,Jean F. has sent a letter via Living Legacy. There will be a pin, that will be designed to honor Dan,and it will benefit the PCF. It sounds really cool. There will be only 5,000 to be sold at this time, and they will sell for $10.00.Pins have not been displayed yet for sale. Also a clip from the new cd,Love in Time to listen to.Sign up at Living Legacy to stay updated on all the news.

  • I missed it...did any one burn it..can they send it to me ?

  • It is still hard to believe he passed. Jeanne has been kind enough to update some photos on Dan's website...there is a great photo and explanation of Dan ice skating (after his dx and treatment). He looks really great in it..even though he was weakened. Take a look. Greg

  • anyone heard anything re: the tribute concert? Greg

  • Thank you for posting and SHARING! Have no idea of how to explain how this song and, nearly all of Dan Fogelberg's songs affect me. So wonderful that his words and voice continue to live! Thank you!

  • Awesome song and artist. By random chance, I just happen buy the Home Free album when it first came out. Even though I'm more appreciative of the earlier albums, I've been a life long fan ever since. I'm certainly not trying to contradict asquare176's bit of trivia concerning the song, but Dan told us during his solo concert in Houston that To The Morning was the first song he ever wrote -at age 14.

  • You may be correct on the age.I was hoping to find the interview to just check the age.He wrote that in his parents living room on the piano.I had found some really cool reads on Dan and some how they have disappeared. I believe it's in the archives of the Peoria Journal. Now you have to pay to retrieve articles. Bummer!!Many of these interviews were in his much younger days,as you can tell by how he was answering the questions. Sounded just like some of my cool guy friends, from that time.

  • Hey, it's absolutely no big deal - certainly nothing that two Dan fans need to argue about. And you're right, he seemed a lot more talkative and "revealing" in his younger days. But, with the ways things have become with the media and with over-zealous fans, I don't blame him for becoming much more private.

  • the interview was around probably the Souvenirs period. And of course they got into a chat about Home Free. He spoke about how many of the songs came about. You may have read my comment on Beggars Wysteria video. By reading all that I have found on Dan, made him human, a everyday type of guy, if that's possible for us to think of him in that way.For me, he was bigger than life, a true mystery! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Dan

  • Thanks bec...

sometimes what makes it all bearable is each other.

  • This is my favorite song. I had those words under my high school picture in 1981.....he taught me about love.

  • Oh...he sounds so young. I can hardly even believe it's him. I just saw some new posts of interviews...I still cry over this terible loss. A MAGNIFICENT HUMAN, ANGEL, GENIOUS, TALENT.

  • This song has always been one of my favorites. But when I began my journey into a personal health crisis, it became my life saver. When the fear grips me, I turn to Danny and hear him say, "Come On Morning" and that gives me courage to fight. Thank you Dan. I'll never forget you. And thank you Beggarsgame, for posting such beautiful videos of our Danny.

  • Oh, how beautiful. One of my favorites by Dan. Just when I thought I was done crying over him, I listen to this. Now I am bawling all over again. But yet smiling through the tears and thanking God for such an amazing gift to us.

  • It is these postings and the love of Dan's fans that will always keep his legacy alive. I believe somehow he knows and is with us, each one. Thank you, beggarsgame for helping to keep Dan alive!

  • Bev,thanks for the video. I love this song! A little trivia. Dan said in a interview, that he wrote this at his parents house early in the morning, while home from college. At the concert I attended in 2002, after I screamed out"We love you Daniel",he heard, looked out into the crowd and he went over to his piano and played this. Seriously, I thought I was going to throw myself upon the stage.I love To the Morning,it's my fave from Home Free and also Be On Your Way.thanks again.

  • Amy, had I been with you, I WOULD have thrown myself on the stage! I would have been a security nightmare! Love this. Listening to Dan interact with the audience. You are quite welcome!

  • Hey D, had to visit one of my fave videos again. You did such an amazing job on this. To Frozenstreams and nvpublictv, we Danfans are a pretty cool group here on the Tube and Beggarsgame has some amazing vids of Dan and others for all to enjoy. I think we all share your thoughts and comments about Dan the man. He will always be missed and remembered greatly. Hugs to all out there. BB in FL.

  • Just when I think I'm beginning to heal, I hear something like this and realize that I probably will never truly fill the void that was left with his passing.

What make it easier is knowing that there are people out there like you all who are not afraid to express their love, their loss and the joy they feel for the man. God... I wish life could have stood still during the era I'm listening to now.

  • yes yes...i have no words.......EVER ON

  • my god, i am in tears... he sounds so young, so raw, so vibrant... this sort of thing helps his legacy to live... ever on! BLESS YOU

  • goosebumps...... one of my all-time favorites of Dan's.

    Thank you for the memory.

  • Thank you for this video! I love hearing Dan sing this with his young voice. I enjoyed listening to his banter with the crowd. This was a sweet period in his life...just starting a life in CO. Love It! Love Dan!

  • This is incredible! To hear Dan at such a young and tender age is so amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  • Always a fine way to start the day. It's exactly that type of morning today. I think it's going to be a good day...

  • Thankyou so much for sharing this!

I too am still grieving the loss of my favorite artist, DanFogelberg. Some 4 months later and I still can cry.I find myself obcessed with finding ANY "new" pics, tapings, concerts. Hearing his youthful banter just endears him so much more in my heart because it confirms the true honesty, warmth and spirit of a truly wonderful man, taken way too early. I am comforted in knowing Dan lived his life to the fullest and entirely as he planned to do.

  • Hey D. Aw woman, you made me cry. One of my favorite Dan picks, you know. The comments he made about buying Chris H's house slay me. The pics are so beautiful and heartfelt, I especially like the snow angel, haha. You are quite the wise ol soul yourself my friend. I wish I could give you more than 5 stars. Thanks for posting yet another priceless performance. Hugs to you, Greg, Alan, and all the Danfans out there. BB in FL.

  • Thank you Beggarsgame. I am still reeling from Dan's passing as I know many of his fans are. The world seems a much sadder place without him. Thank you for the great video and recording of Dan.

  • WOW, what can you say. The most fantastic rendetion I have ever heard of To The Morning. (I have heard very many.)

    Thank you so much !

  • I am so glad that I am able to share some of these live performances with others (thanks to Greg) They are truly wonderful! Thank you Dan for all that you gave and continue to give. Love to all!

  • thanks for this! How can you not love this man?

He reminds me so much of the guys I hung out with. A cool guy with such warmth and personality. Thanks again for sharing this to all. Danfans are the best!

  • @beggarsgame

Thanks so much for sharing this amazing jewel. Please continue to share if you have more, as we could never get enough of Dan's live performances, especailly in his early years. The combination of his writing mastery and wonderfully unique vocal quality place him in amongst the elite artists of our time. I look forward to hearing him one day where I'm sure he is headlining for our creator.........

  • @beggarsgame - would you be willing to please post this message on all your DF videos, please?

    Imagine 100,000 Danfans in one place ! ! !

  • @beggarsgame One word Wow what a gift he had

  • My favorite song of all his songs.

I'm happy that for Dan there is a new morning, but.....I miss him very very much. Something died in me when he died, but...'there is really no way to say no to the morning'. We have to go on without Dan Fogelberg.

I wish Jean a lot of strength.

  • As tears fall, I want to thank you for sharing this with us all. Hearing it live from '73 takes me back and makes me miss him all the more....

    pj

  • Thank you

  • you were at the is show??? !!...any comments you can add?

  • You've really captured the essence...what a beautiful way to start the day. This has to be the most intense piece I've ever heard. Thanks for all the work, D. "Sometimes in the night I feel it," and it is still hard to believe; but sharing with the 'knowing' helps.

  • Here is to missing the 70's and to missing D.F. Another wonderful job beggarsgame. Thanks

  • Stunningly beautiful! The kid was only 22. A genius. "Young Mozart" indeed.

  • One man, one piano, one beautiful voice for us to enjoy for all time! Thanks for posting this timeless glimpse into a young sonwriters very soul. You'll always live within our hearts Dan.

  • All I can say is WOW! Incredible live performance of just one guy and and one piano. Dan really was a young Mozart as Norbert Putnam said in a recent article (Norbert played bass for Elvis and produced Dan's album Home Free).

  • Wow, excellent video to an outstanding "live" recording of Dan. I've always loved this song so much, the original on "Home Free" has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded period. I love to listen to it in the early morning when the Sun comes up.

  • One of my favorite Dan songs... thank you for posting this live version.

  • I was there...no Dan, it wasn't California and that was my friend David who said not yet....what a trip

This is awesome....there is a new Live From Ebbets Field release out...but I don't remember this being on it....???

5 stars like all of yours D.

  • How awesome is that! Did you view the Stars video D put up?
