I've heard people say The Hurting is too dark or SFTBC is too commercial or TSOL is too jazzy or Roland's 90s work wasn't as good as what he did with Curt. I honestly love all TFF records. There are alot of great bands out there that I also love, but alot of them have a noticeable mix of strong and weak records. With TFF though, every one counted. They did not write one bad record. For me, RATKOS is their second best after TSOL. Hey guys, three comments in under 48 hrs, nice to see!!
I think that the "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" doesn't really get a fair shake. There are some true gems to be found on it, including Secrets, this song and my all-time favorite: "Me and My Big Ideas." It's a shame seemingly so few people know about these songs, especially "Me and My Big Ideas." It seems that not even many people who claim to be TFF fans know about that song. It's easily one of their best and deserves to be heard more. The Raoul album got bad reviews and the song was overlooked
I remember the first thought I had the first time I heard TFF's back in the 80's..."the dark haired guy has one heck of a voice, and he's the real talent of the band" Seen them for the first time live in Aug of 2010 in Detroit. I was star struck! And have since bought many of their cd's....I love them!
Another masterpiece by Roland, the "Doors" Like atmosphere is perfect & shows the real strength on Tears. Curt wrote some great songs but his solo albums sound
@Dwessie Also if you are just stressed this tune really puts things in perspective. Even when you have fallen down, you still have a choice in swimming or drowning.
yeah, and even if it was a mistake, it sounds good... sometimes people make mistakes, and come in early or whatever, and the producer is like "that was good, lets do it like that every time"
I'm sure the vocal re-entry on 3:13 was by design. TFF has always been rhythmically impeccable; even in their first two albums. A good example is the percussion on Shout with its staggered-beat "clinking glass jar" accents.
A little piece of almost perfectness from the 90's .. at 3:13 he comes in a bit early .. as someone pointed out .. noone seems to care .. who would with a voice like his? My daughter was just a teen at the time .. we both loved TFF. Good music has no age boundaries.
There was quite a time when I thought I am doomed because I already found every piece of cool music on this planet. ONLY THEN I found TFF, a well hidden TREASURE.
Brilliant with headphones....You can hear every nuance, every intricate NOISE composed in this masterpiece!!! So musically complicated and soaring with passion, as most of his work is!!!
Could this be the best song from TFF? Well, to me it is & by far...
"Raoul & the Kings of Spain" is not only TFF's best album but also one of the finest records from the 90's. Anyone who really loves music should own a copy.
@ToniMartin77 R&TKoS is definitely the best TFF album. And it's saying a lot considering their body of work. Raoul is near or at the top of my list of albums I'd take to a desert island. Brilliant album.
One of the great bands which helped to keep serious rock alive into the 90s. Too bad everything on the popular scene (or at least > 90% of it) has fallen into such a state of complete decay.
I say this as a fan of rock from the British Invasion, to 70s prog to early/mid 80s top-40 to 90s alternative. I don't fuck around with being eclectic. In lolcat, "I'z doin it rite"!
Hippie girl 34... Thank you for that drum comment...I always thought the same...and what about that falsetto intro to the bridge? to quote you..."Bloody brilliant"! this 80's fan can't wait to see them 7/17/09 in Costa Mesa, CA!
All the songs are just.... amazing... I love all the ideas on the songs and the music sequence... I dont know... is just like no thing that you never could see again... !!!!!!!!!!!! TFT rules!!!
The lyrics are what made this record so damn great! Remember this is the record that Roland poured himself out totally. He expressed his love for his wife and his faith in God on this record. This record is what he was trying to express on all of the previous Tears For Fears records. It was after this record that Roland terminated the therapy he was attending for years. A bloody brilliant record indeed!
I can't belive I remember the lyrics to these songs!..but then again... The amount of times I played these albums , something must have stuck. I mean come on they are unforgetable. They really bring back lots of memories.
Tears for Fears Rock!Love them and you for posting this..thanks!
I kind of like the odd lyrics. Some of them seem to make sense, but that may just be me. I always thought this was their best album, TFFFan, and thanks for posting, Hippie, I hadn't found this song. : )
IMHO, Roland was the brilliance behind the success of TFF. I LOVED this album!

Amazing song. For some reason, it sounds like the kind of song Neil Young would have written, which is a huge compliment to Roland.
