it can run for hour if you dont do this it can run for allmost a 24hr if it runs longer than than that you got some other issues run ccleaner i know other pc tech will talk shit about that but in my 5 yrs of work yes run that and this and bam unless you have a virus than malwarebytes

All defragmenting does is make your files in order to eachother. Over time the files will get mixed up and it takes the hard drive longer to reach them but if you defragment them it will put all the necessary files close to eachother to speed your computer up.

it took me 7 hours to defrag a 250gb hard drive, but only because i haven't defraged in 17 months. it's best to scedual defrag once a month

When I was using Windows Xp and then I defragged my HDD it only took me 3hours or less. Now im using Windows Vista im still defragmenting.. elapsed time = 18hours.

My HDD size is only 320gb and divide by 3 partition, and my Drive C has only 200gb something. 200gb = 18hours and still counting.

I use Diskeeper to defrag lousy Vista. Just install DK2009 and set it to auto, and you're done...it automatically defrags in the background much much faster than the nasty Vista defragger. And yeah, it defrags all the files too.

But something like that happened to me before,I have a new laptop and i realize that the hard was getting full really fast and i wasnt storing that many files, so

what was happening was that every time that i installed an update for vista it created a restauration point and after a while that was taking like 40Gig, so if youre computer is running like it supose to you can delete all of this restauration points except the last one.
