  • Thank you so much, this has helped soomuch. I found this to be quite informative, thank you.

  • That was a great tut. thanks. One ??, won't using your lap-top or a flashlight while your taking the shot cause a ghost image to appear on the photo?? I had to get my Minolta XG-7 'tuned-up' and it's ready to go camping in the Redwoods this weekend; I'm going to try this out there and I'll post my results as soon as possible after.

    b/b)O(

  • As long as you keep the viewfinder covered with masking tape or cloth and keep any light behind the camera, you'll be fine.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 What does ASA mean?

  • An equivalent of ISO from the film days. ASA = American Standards Association.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 You have you point the camera 0° north but which north? Magnetic north or true north?

  • True north, that's where the Northern Star (Polaris) could be found.

  • that was cool :) thanks!!!!!!

  • everytime i use T64 i get reciprocity failure, sometimes even at 30 seconds. have you ever had any problems?

  • Nope, never had a problem.

  • Why'd you set the ASA value when the camera doesn't have batteries nor are you using the meter?

  • Neither of the above; just as a reminder.

  • why the bag?

  • To prevent camera shake caused by triggering and shutter mirror slapping.

  • Where is the result of your job? Where is the star trail?

  • Why did you skip the first part? They are there.

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 Ummmm, I saw it!!!, Great Job!!!! COngratulations. I´m a rookey on this matter but I´m learning a little bit, when I take my first shoots I will let you know.

  • Hi,

I'd like to know wether it's possible to wipe off your lens during a long exposure startrail shoot.Reason I ask this is because last time which was also my first time I gave it a serious try, when I came back to my camera (olympus OM 1) the lens was completely covered with drops!

Is there also a limit in which you can't make photo's anymore?

    Meaning humidity?

Fuji film i asked you for is only to get from the states, sending is more expensive than the actual product! Bummer! regards

  • No, it is moisture buildup because your lens was warm when you took it outside into the cold. The only solution is to leave the lens in bag for at least 20 minutes to acclimate to temperature change before using (cold lens + cold temperature = no problem). That way, the lens will stay cold without any moisture buildup.

Uhm, actually, the film is sold internationally, not juse the U.S.. You can try your local professional camera store, they should have it.

  • hi thanks for your tutorial,

PLEASE tell me where to find that fujichrome t64 film??????

I'm looking all over the net but I can't find it anywhere.....

    Help!!!

Be my savior and let me in on your secret where to find it ha ha

    all the best, deejay

  • Uhm. Go to bhphotovideo, com and type this, "fujichrome 64T" in search, voila.

Surprised you looked everywhere and can't find it.

  • thanx,,,helpful video :)

  • Do you know if there is any lenses you can buy for a canon af35m I think the 1st version? Like lenses attachments? And how much is film usually?

  • Again, we do not know Canons, you would have to refer to your user's manual to see other optional accessories.

For Fujichrome Tungsten 64 35mm 36-exposures film, about $12 per roll.

  • Good job Tkanks

  • Why do you use the heavy bag on the body? To prevent shaking by wind or something?

  • Yup, that's correct. Even a heavy camera on a rock-solid tripod won't stay still without any heavyweight on top of it.

  • Hey thanks for the tutorial! all i need now is a shutter cable :'(

  • Name your camera brand and model, I can find out if there is a cable available for your camera model.

  • now only very helpful but also a great soundtrack.

  • It sounds like your FM have a problem because FM can operate with or without batteries.

Okay, remove the lens and take a look at the foam casing on the sides of the shutter chamber to see if it became thick (more like goo). If it is present, try removing the goo with tweezers and carefully push the mirror down.

    Reshoot.

If the mirror continues getting stuck, unfortunately, there is nothing you can do except having it repaired at your local camera store.

  • could i use my Minolta hi-matic 9? it's not an SLR but i has most of the same features as an SLR.

My Only working SLR is a EOS Rebel T2 and it uses batteries.

Great tutorial and very helpful. I now feel superior that i only use Film SLRs hehe

  • Ah, a rangefinder. Your Minolta Hi-matic 9 is a rangefinder camera.

Yes, you could use it as long as you have the old fashioned shutter release cable that you screw into the hole on top of the shutter release button. Use Bulb and leave your camera out and set your alarm for an hour before the sun comes up. :)

  • Thanks, i think i have one of those shutter release buttons somewhere around in one of my my camera bags.

My uncle just gave me that rangefinder a month a go. It was My grandpa's he bought it in Israel a long time ago, 50s or 6os. On the top he inscribed L.G.L (Leo Gaynor Lipman). Lots of family history in that camera!

Thanks again for the help, Now i'l get out of your hair for a wile. hehe :)

  • Good guide, I've tried doing star trails before, but both times i came back and the front element of my lens was covered in ice. I have heard some people use lens heaters; what do you do about this?

  • Ah, a typical human error.

Always take your gear bag out of the house or car then leave it out unopened for about 10 minutes or up to an hour (depending on the temperature) until your lens' body temperature matches the outdoors temperature then you can pull it out and it won't get frosty or icicles.

Think... You have cold soda can and put it in the hot sunlight, it gets all wet, same thing but the opposite. :)

  • Hi Joey, these tutorials (Part 1 & 2) are really unique and helpful. Thank you for your effort.

For long exposures i also use Konica Impresa 50 Professional. I really love this film, grains are so smooth. If you can find this film, you should try.

PS: Film day are never over ;)
