That was a Tokay gecko (Gekko Gecko). They're native to that region and are quite popular as pets. Yes, they do have a reputation for being vicious biters.

I first came to Thailand to get my Teaching English as a Foreign Language certification. While here I met my wife and fell in love with her and her family. I really appreciate the social structures of my family here. We eat together, travel, and work together on our farm here. Totally different then my life in California. The food, people, atmosphere, language, and expenses are all great too. I often say my heart is Thai. I come back here every chance I get to be with my Thai family :-)
