Whats sad is Shawn Lane, one of the best guitarists ever, dies because he cant afford medicine. Another pathetic thing about culture is the video "Amazing Bass Player." The guy is insane, puts Flea, who, imo, is over-rated anyway, to shame, and is playing on the fucking.street. Now, might he be in a band? Definitely. Are they big enough to mean he doesnt have to play on the streets for some extra money? Probably not. Shit makes me sick.
Consider for a moment, if you will, this example of how shitty American Pop Culture is. Chuck Schuldiner passes away at an early age and nothing is on the news. An inventor of a style and a pioneer. Whitney Houston dies and the world stops turning. Vigils are held. Grammys are dedicated to her. Flags in New Jersey fly half-mast. Drug addict who sang what she was told to. Bullshit? Yay or nay?
@VisualMaelStrom Yay, you pretty much captured in a paragraph the thoughts of any fan of real true talent and not brainwashed sheep produced by the mass media.
THIS is why America can't have pretty things. Americans ignore vast talents like this and mock people who know how to play their instruments since they're dumb asses that know nothing about the years of dedication and blood/sweat/tears geniuses like this put into learning their craft. It's the true geniuses like Jason Becker that are unfairly slapped down (by ALS in his case) and the useless corporate puppets like Ke$ha that live forever and go down in history. Damn them.
@KamenRiderNecro mmhhm. no wonder friedman went to japan. i bet deep down he thought all the brillaint pieces him and jason wrote deserved a lot more recognition. and come on, it's true. and with the course music has today? yeah, i dont think he'll ever go back to the states. mainstream is so bullshit
@TheZlasher Exactly! I've been saying for some time now that Japan has defeated the US in terms of great music and pop culture--even their bubblegum pop singers are better than what we have here in the US.
What the hell did I do to deserve that? I was defending Jason Becker, and I never said that this wasn't shredding. You're the little cockface here, I didn't do anything to deserve that.
yup just checked with metronome. this one's played at 168 bpm. he pulled it off in an electric guitar with distortion with reasonable muting ( mega hard at this speed ).
@Fluffypopcicle I wasn't necessarily calling Becker sloppy, I was criticizing the idea that hitting all the notes constitutes playing a piece well. Some bits sound like they could be off, but honestly the distortion jumbles the music so much it's difficult to tell. If you listen at 1:15 he makes a few mistakes that I'm sure you'll hear. Those mistakes don't make the entire performance bad, though. On the contrary, I think it's good. A picky person might call it sloppy, however.
Yeah, I know. When covering a classical piano piss you can hit all the notes, but if the dynamics are terrible then you can call it extremely sloppy. He did miss a few notes in this, I was just exaggerating and also wanted to see if anybody had a good enough ear to actually notice it. Every guitarist misses notes here and there from Jason Becker to Paul Gilbert to Shawn Lane.
@Fluffypopcicle MAN, NOT CRITIZICING U, BUT IT IS ALL ABOUT NOT MISSING ANY NOTE DUDE. AND A GUITARIST JASON BECKER LEVEL'S SHOULDN'T MISS ANY NOTES. I MEAN IF U CAN'T PLAY A THEME IN IT'S ENTIRETY, SIMPLY MEANS THAT U NEED MORE PRACTICE, OR IN THE WORST SCENARIO, THAT U JUST HIT YOUR LIMITS.
There isn't a guitarist in history that has a discography of no missed notes. It's possible to slip up and Jason Becker has played stuff more challenging than this and hit every note perfectly. Covers aren't about hitting every note, they're about paying tribute to those who influenced you. FYI cap locks only make you look like an idiot.
@Fluffypopcicle Hitting every note perfectly isn't the goal, I can get that. But if paying tribute to influence was Becker's goal, he failed miserably. Not only is this rendition absolutely sloppy (as someone said below), but it's also simplified. There are no scales in this version. He substitutes whole passages with longer notes (0:16, for example). There is nothing in this that screams Paganini. I'm not going to go easy on him because he plays the guitar.
And of course you refer to violinists instead of guitar players. It's just a curse that guitar players modify classical pieces. They can never get them quite right, but covering a piece is showing respect, sloppy or not. When have you heard a guitar player get a world record with the legit Flight Of The Bumblebee piece? It's never happened and never will. regardless, this is his way of showing respect, nothing you do can ever take that away.
@Fluffypopcicle I refer to violinists because they can actually play the piece right. I wouldn't call changing the piece because you're unable to play it respectful, but if that's how you interpret it that's fine. My problem is with his musicianship and the fact that his playing is garbage. If you don't care about that, then this is the place for you.
And you base this off of a single cover? Fuck you, you're a retard. Nobody can take a look at a single video and judge a man's entire discography based on that single video. For Christ's sake, grow a brain. watch?v=JtjOe5e9VFA watch?v=87Iz3RHZNDQ there, here is some music of his and the last one is just a snippet of a masterpiece which he played flawlessly while nearly crippled by ALS.

I listened to him play. I didn't like it. I'm not going to be nice. This performance was awful. You can try to save this performance all you want, but you just can't.
Jason Becker has covered plenty of classical songs flawlessly. Go look up the Mozart one or even the Bach one. "My problem is with his musicianship and the fact that his playing is garbage" I'm sorry, but if you expect me to think that you were only referring to this cover then you're out of your mind. Also, he has composed brilliant music like this watch?v=QmJIzEhxdnw without being able to move a muscle in his body. You might like his composing.
@Fluffypopcicle MY CAPS ON R JUST CUZ I LIKE TO TYPE LIKE THAT DUDE, SO CHILL OUT. WHEN U COVER SOMETHING THERE R 2 WAYS. IN THIS CASE HE WAS PLAYING AS IT IS, SO HE SHOULDN'T HAVE MISSED ANY NOTE.BUT IT'S NOT LIKE THE WHOLE WORLD CAME DOWN THOUGH.
Steve Vai's version sounds better, though it's because he simplified it, Jason played the real composition by Pagainini note for note, and for that I like this more :D
@miyavizim yeah, plus steve's was professionally recorded for a major motion picture, while this is a VHS home video of Jason noodling around in his studio. steve also played arguably the easiest part of it as well too - it's a testament to how terrifying jason was that this is STILL the best version of 5th caprice i've heard on guitar 20-odd years on.
unbelievable comeback. he continues to compose, only communicates by eye-movement based reader/writer system. developed by his father. what a fantastic family, supporting him, in so excrutiating circumstances. best wishes for them.
@1bol1 Sure, sorry... I just meant that Becker was an amazing player and the last part is pretty dirty, maybe it's a due of the sound, he was pretty young.
fuck this...how did he transcribe this during their time, even if someone gave me the transcription for this i won't attempt to study this song.... it's going to take some decades or even centuries...
@tabotabojayar you don't need to transcribe it. It's written for the violin, which is played in the same clef as guitar, therefore all the notes are the same.
To be honest, I know I'll get some angry comments, but it's really not that good. His skills are far from accurate.....nor is his playing really that tough. Just half scales repeated over and over and tremelo. He only played about 5% of the actual Paganin piece, but people on this board don't know that, because they don't know music.
@Rachmanfan4life not from me cause i agree with u!and that happens with joe satrian too...in midnight he goes slow,fast,slow,fast...he slows it comes to hard piece so he can be sure he isnt gonna make a mistake...
@bergAgreb no offense, but as soon as you or anyone else starts talking about 'selling out', I'm done with the conversation. what an artist does or does not choose to create and/or release is not contingent upon anyone else's approval but his/their own.
Besides to what the most thumbed up comments say, i´d like to add that Becker played until he was like 20 and Malmsteen still plays on his 50´s or so, just imagine if Becker would´ve kept on playing.
damn wish he woulda made a studio version...i think paganini would have been impressed himself. his music is very tough to play especially when you transcribe it from a violin to a guitar which are completely different
@anthonybeck21 The guitar version does have its quirks, but the violin version will always be harder to play because of intonation. The guitar has frets while a violin does not. Try playing this on a fretless guitar! Then we can start comparisons :)
Still, mad props to Becker.. it's difficult nonetheless.
@Shivemaster I personally find a pick easier to maneuver than a bow. Pick~4g, Violin bow~60g. Most of the movement in tremolo picking is from the wrists/finger/hand. Bowing employs more muscles, arms, forearms, etc. Also, there is tone: the definition of an acceptable tone is much more narrow in classical music (thus harder to generate) than metal/rock. A good tone in metal only requires some nice pups and a juicy boutique pedal.
just the opinions of someone who plays and enjoys many genres :)
LOL, I love when people have to start comparing this technique to others who use it (equally as well) whether it be Yngwie or Gilbert or whoever. Just appreciate it.
people that whine about these guys having soul are usually the ones that suck the most at the electric axe, or any axe for that matter. soul is in the ear of the listener. and if you play this guy does in this video the girls are gonna get wet, and you're gonna be a rockstar for the night. chicks dig dudes that are awesome
I'm not sure what's the name of his disease but the poor guy body is confined to a wheelchair and cannot speak. He needs his parents to look after him. He had problems in his early 20's and it just got worse. In an article I read he said that he knew this was going to be his fate as a child. God bless him and his family and you too for your concern.
@shovelthumbs78 he has Lou Gehrig's disease whicg affects the motor control of his muscles, its similar to Motor Neurone Disease or often known as ALS - I treat people with it and it's horrible because it only affects motor control meaning the brain, communication, touch, smell etc are all perfectly in tact. Poor guy. Amazing talent lost
@dreamtheaterz28 hes paraplethic idk how to write it but the thing is that he can only move his eyes... BUT TEH FUCKER STILL COMPOSE MUSIC!! HE CAN ONLY MOVE HIS EYES AND STILL ROCKING!! HES IS THE SHIT!! (in a good way n_n)
Jason Becker became one of the best guitarist in the world when he was only 18. You know what, you dumbfuck? Listen to Paganini's caprice 24th. Malmsteen couldn't play it (and probably still can't), and said it's IMPOSSIBLE. Then Jason (17 or 18 years old) played whole this song easily. You can read about this in wikipedia. So, if Jason was not ill today, Yngwie would lick his shoes. What know, you bitch? Go fuck yourself. JASON PWNS THIS SHIT!
Ok Malmsteen's fanboy. Actually I like Malmsteen. But I don't like you, horsefucking eating shit mongrel incest and dipshit of slutty cunt! I know you're stupid and haven't heard any of Becker's album. One his album is as good as two Malmsteen's albums together. He's better in any technique, especially in arpeggioes. And really, where are his mistakes in the first minute? You are dumb. And the fact is that Malmsteen like to copy too much, while Becker made his own compositions and music style.
BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND! What happens when you just talk crap? you get a thumbs down you piece of SHIT! Everyone copies you IDIOT! Its how new things are made, using copies of the original but altering it, it's life MOTHERFUCKER so just get the fuck over it you fucking imbecile, everytime i check youtube i have to see your fucking coments, it actually makes me sick, YOU need to get some fucking knowledge on fucking music before you even step up to the big boys with your BULLSHIT theories!
1. I think my comments are more complex than yours.
2. "YOU need to get some fucking knowledge on fucking music" - said by cool guy with great knowledge about music, who thinks Malmsteen is better than Becker. You are music-tarded
3. Hmmm I got thumbs down? Maybe, but your has been deleted. What now, you shit?
WOW-FUCKING-WEE! You can count to 4! Bravo..... Bravo.... *clapshand* I fucking applaud you MOtherfucker! If you play the guitar is that how you play your tabs? I got an idea for you though, why don't you try this....:
1. Take a running jump off the nearest talling building you can find without a parachute and aim you FUCKING head to the ground FUCKFACE! It might knock some sense into your spastik brain, just Kill yourself OK! FUCKING BITCH!
@algor123 Think you'll find Friedman was taught by Satriani. So if there were no Malmsteen, there would still be Friedman, and probably there would be Becker as well
@dajiaoma77777 well they are heavily influenced by malmsteen. jason being a big fan of paganini and malmsteen, (blackstar cover) show that he listened to him and that. friedman was self taught to.
@algor123 The influences may be the case, but what I pointed out was that while Malmsteen was certainly an influence, Friedman would have been a guitarist without Malmsteen IMO. Malmsteen may have popularised the neo-classical style of music, but some players didn't start neo-classical from hearing Malmsteen. They played from hearing other neo-classical musicians.
The real shame is that Jason did do incredible things while he was up and about. What I consider his magnum opus, Speed metal Syphony is one of the most beutiful compositions I have ever heard. He would have gone on to do INCREDIBLE things.
where are the fuckin entro runs ?
becker , you dissapoint me because this sounds like crap.
some unforgiveable mistakes , and speed problem which are below your skill level.
come on jason , you really screwed this up.

Besides to what the most thumbed up comments say, i´d like to add that Becker played until he was like 20 and Malmsteen still plays on his 50´s or so, just imagine if Becker would´ve kept on playing.

damn wish he woulda made a studio version...i think paganini would have been impressed himself. his music is very tough to play especially when you transcribe it from a violin to a guitar which are completely different
anthonybeck21 1 year ago
@anthonybeck21 The guitar version does have its quirks, but the violin version will always be harder to play because of intonation. The guitar has frets while a violin does not. Try playing this on a fretless guitar! Then we can start comparisons :)
Still, mad props to Becker.. it's difficult nonetheless.
ShiruSushi 1 year ago
@ShiruSushi while I agree to some degree.. try playing violin with a pick. then we can start comparisons.
Shivemaster 1 year ago
@Shivemaster I personally find a pick easier to maneuver than a bow. Pick~4g, Violin bow~60g. Most of the movement in tremolo picking is from the wrists/finger/hand. Bowing employs more muscles, arms, forearms, etc. Also, there is tone: the definition of an acceptable tone is much more narrow in classical music (thus harder to generate) than metal/rock. A good tone in metal only requires some nice pups and a juicy boutique pedal.
just the opinions of someone who plays and enjoys many genres :)
ShiruSushi 1 year ago
@ShredManShred .... This piece is tough to play! Must have nimble fingers....I wish I could play this as well as JB!

LOL, I love when people have to start comparing this technique to others who use it (equally as well) whether it be Yngwie or Gilbert or whoever. Just appreciate it.

what misfortune would that be? what happend to him/
dreamtheaterz28 2 years ago
I'm not sure what's the name of his disease but the poor guy body is confined to a wheelchair and cannot speak. He needs his parents to look after him. He had problems in his early 20's and it just got worse. In an article I read he said that he knew this was going to be his fate as a child. God bless him and his family and you too for your concern.
shovelthumbs78 2 years ago 4
@shovelthumbs78 he has Lou Gehrig's disease whicg affects the motor control of his muscles, its similar to Motor Neurone Disease or often known as ALS - I treat people with it and it's horrible because it only affects motor control meaning the brain, communication, touch, smell etc are all perfectly in tact. Poor guy. Amazing talent lost

And the fact is that Malmsteen like to copy too much, while Becker made his own compositions and music style.
uchicha666 2 years ago
BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND! What happens when you just talk crap? you get a thumbs down you piece of SHIT! Everyone copies you IDIOT! Its how new things are made, using copies of the original but altering it, it's life MOTHERFUCKER so just get the fuck over it you fucking imbecile, everytime i check youtube i have to see your fucking coments, it actually makes me sick, YOU need to get some fucking knowledge on fucking music before you even step up to the big boys with your BULLSHIT theories!
levitabusman 2 years ago
4. Anyway - FUCK YOU !!!
uchicha666 2 years ago
WOW-FUCKING-WEE! You can count to 4! Bravo..... Bravo.... *clapshand* I fucking applaud you MOtherfucker! If you play the guitar is that how you play your tabs? I got an idea for you though, why don't you try this....:
1. Take a running jump off the nearest talling building you can find without a parachute and aim you FUCKING head to the ground FUCKFACE! It might knock some sense into your spastik brain, just Kill yourself OK! FUCKING BITCH!

Malmsteen killed the idea of shred by soulless playing. Becker and Friedman are far far above as musicians.
Slavik27 2 years ago 4

um well i dont think thats far to say about him, no malmsteen no becker or friedman, you have to be def not to hear the similaritys
algor123 1 year ago
@algor123 Think you'll find Friedman was taught by Satriani. So if there were no Malmsteen, there would still be Friedman, and probably there would be Becker as well
dajiaoma77777 1 year ago
@dajiaoma77777 well they are heavily influenced by malmsteen. jason being a big fan of paganini and malmsteen, (blackstar cover) show that he listened to him and that. friedman was self taught to.
algor123 1 year ago
@algor123 The influences may be the case, but what I pointed out was that while Malmsteen was certainly an influence, Friedman would have been a guitarist without Malmsteen IMO. Malmsteen may have popularised the neo-classical style of music, but some players didn't start neo-classical from hearing Malmsteen. They played from hearing other neo-classical musicians.
dajiaoma77777 1 year ago
@algor123 my good sir it was my own inspiration mr randy rhoads who influenced litterally all three of those guys it all comes from somewhere

The real shame is that Jason did do incredible things while he was up and about. What I consider his magnum opus, Speed metal Syphony is one of the most beutiful compositions I have ever heard. He would have gone on to do INCREDIBLE things.
